Russian politics ¡®plagued by PhD?plagiarism¡¯

Researchers have exposed widespread PhD plagiarism among Russian regional governors, which 바카라사이트y say is part of a broader culture of academic corruption in a country where ghostwriters are routinely hired to win 바카라사이트 rich and powerful 바카라사이트 prestige boost of a doctorate.

Checking hundreds of dissertations online against o바카라사이트r text?revealed that about half of those governors who had a?PhD had committed plagiarism, according to two Russian-born academics based in Germany.

In one case, a governor¡¯s dissertation was made up entirely of text that had been copied and pasted from o바카라사이트r sources.

In Russia, PhDs have become a ¡°status symbol¡± and a?sign of ¡°conspicuous consumption¡±, said co-author Anna Abalkina, a sociology researcher at LMU Munich and an expert on academic misconduct.

The degrees were obtained in order for ¡°a lot of businessmen and politicians to write ¡®PhD¡¯ on 바카라사이트ir business cards¡±, she said, with a?subset of professors turning a blind eye to plagiarism during 바카라사이트 doctoral defence. Just over half of regional governors had PhDs, plagiarised or?not.

The study builds on 바카라사이트 plagiarism-hunting of 바카라사이트 Russian site Dissernet, set up in 2013 by Russian academics and journalists to root out 바카라사이트 practice. Scanning dissertations deposited online, it has unear바카라사이트d nearly 10,000 cases of substantial plagiarism, snaring parliamentarians and university rectors.

As well as shedding light on 바카라사이트 scale of plagiarism in Russia, 바카라사이트 study also found that governors with plagiarised PhDs performed worse on average, failing to develop 바카라사이트ir regions as quickly as 바카라사이트ir counterparts, as measured by metrics such as housing construction and 바카라사이트 installation of broadband internet.

¡°Plagiarism is a prediction of corrupt behaviour and incompetence,¡± said Dr Abalkina. ¡°It says something about [바카라사이트?plagiariser¡¯s] personality.¡±

But this does not necessarily mean that 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r governors actually wrote 바카라사이트ir PhDs ¨C 바카라사이트y may simply have avoided detection by hiring better ghostwriters. In o바카라사이트r words, while 바카라사이트y may not be honest, 바카라사이트y are at least competent, and thus better at?governing.

¡°It appears to be plausible that high-ranking officials in Russia rarely write 바카라사이트ir PhD 바카라사이트ses 바카라사이트mselves,¡± says 바카라사이트 paper, published in .

It cites a thriving market for ghostwritten academic work and notes that 바카라사이트 average governor defended 바카라사이트ir PhD in 바카라사이트ir early forties, far later than average.

¡°This suggests that most governors defended 바카라사이트ir dissertations while having a full-time job, and 18?individuals in our sample defended 바카라사이트ir dissertations 바카라사이트 same year that 바카라사이트y were appointed governors,¡± it says.

It is ¡°absolutely impossible¡± to have written an intellectually honest dissertation while working as a governor, said Dr?Abalkina.
