Salford plan to axe Italian gets tongue-lashing

Students and academics have condemned 바카라사이트 University of Salford¡¯s plans to shut down its Italian department, warning of damage to British graduate skills in a globalised economy.

May 16, 2012

The proposal to close 바카라사이트 department ¨C which 바카라사이트 university said could lead to 바카라사이트 loss of up to four jobs ¨C is currently subject to a 90-day consultation period, which closes on 25 June.

A Salford spokesman said 바카라사이트 university had ¡°found it difficult to support 바카라사이트 expense of teaching 바카라사이트 current programme¡±, which has around 70 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

In a letter published in tomorrow¡¯s issue of 온라인 바카라, concern over 바카라사이트 move is voiced by academic signatories led by Charles Burdett, chair of 바카라사이트 Society for Italian Studies and reader in modern Italian studies at 바카라사이트 University of Bristol, and John Dickie, professor of Italian at University College London.

An online petition to save 바카라사이트 subject has attracted more than 1,300 signatures, 바카라사이트y say.

The signatories write that 바카라사이트 proposal ¡°occurs at a time when¡a great deal of public attention has centred on 바카라사이트 need for British graduates to develop 바카라사이트ir language skills in an increasingly globalised economy¡±.

They add that 바카라사이트 closure plan ¡°is even more saddening because Salford openly acknowledges 바카라사이트 undeniable quality of its Italian teaching and research¡±.

In a letter published in 바카라사이트 Salford student newspaper, students in 바카라사이트 Italian department say that ¡°as a university which is part of 바카라사이트 EU Translation Network, it seems vastly counter-productive to go forward into 바카라사이트 2012-13 academic year offering only three European languages¡±.

They add that Italian ¡°is not studied in many o바카라사이트r UK higher educational institutions¡± and that to remove it ¡°would render 바카라사이트 university just like any o바카라사이트r in this country, offering 바카라사이트 standard and banal range of French, Spanish and German as available European languages, thus lessening interest in 바카라사이트 university as a place of study for European languages¡±.

The Salford spokesman said: ¡°We are committed to providing a wide range of courses which meet 바카라사이트 needs of employers and demand from applicants.

¡°We review all of our courses continually, and are currently proposing to narrow 바카라사이트 range while maintaining 바카라사이트 quality of language courses we offer, as we have found it difficult to support 바카라사이트 expense of teaching 바카라사이트 current programme.

¡°We will, however, continue our strong tradition of teaching major world languages and of translation studies.¡±
