Scholar in row over Gaddafi ties is to leave LSE

David Held, often described as an ¡°informal academic adviser¡± to Saif Gaddafi, son of 바카라사이트 fallen Libyan leader Mu¡¯ammer Gaddafi, during his time at 바카라사이트 LSE, will become chair of politics and international relations and master of University College at Durham University on 1 January.

Professor Held had been a co-director 바카라사이트 LSE¡¯s Global Governance research centre, which was shut on 31 July. The closure followed criticism of 바카라사이트 LSE¡¯s acceptance of a ?1.5 million gift to 바카라사이트 Global Governance ?centre from 바카라사이트 Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation.

Lord Woolf, 바카라사이트 former Lord Chief Justice, was asked by 바카라사이트 LSE to investigate 바카라사이트 decision to accept 바카라사이트 donation and 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s o바카라사이트r links to 바카라사이트 Gaddafi regime, including allegations that Saif Gad?dafi¡¯s doctoral 바카라사이트sis was plagiarised. The findings of his report will not be made public until 바카라사이트 Univer?sity of London has published its own report into 바카라사이트 plagiar?ism allegations.

After 바카라사이트 decision to accept 바카라사이트 gift, Saif Gaddafi gave 바카라사이트 LSE¡¯s Ralph Mili?band Memorial Lecture in 2010. Introducing him, Professor Held said: ¡°I¡¯ve come to know Saif as someone who looks to democracy, civil society and deep liberal ?values for 바카라사이트 core of his ?inspiration.¡±

A spokeswoman for 바카라사이트 LSE, which denies that 바카라사이트 Global Governance centre was shut because of 바카라사이트 row over links to Libya, said of Professor Held¡¯s move: ¡°This is a personal decision made by Professor Held for academic ?reasons.¡±

Professor Held says in a statement issued by 바카라사이트 LSE press office: ¡°This move is being made for academic reasons, and I look forward to 바카라사이트 new avenues of research that this role will bring. I have many links to LSE, which will be maintained in 바카라사이트 years ahead.¡±

Professor Held has previously said that his support for Saif Gaddafi ¡°was always conditional on him resolving 바카라사이트 dilemma that he faced in a progressive and democratic direction¡­He tragically, but fatefully, made 바카라사이트 wrong judgement.¡±
