April 28, 1995

Anyone who can see a profitable way of connecting rural schools to 바카라사이트 information superhighway should tell 바카라사이트 Government by July 7.

On Monday Gillian Shephard, Secretary of State for Education, launched 바카라사이트 Superhighways for Education consultation paper. But 바카라사이트 only Government money she offered was for 바카라사이트 evaluation of pilot projects. She made it clear that 바카라사이트 private sector is expected to finance 바카라사이트 construction of 바카라사이트 education superhighway. To meet 바카라사이트 Department for Education's definition of "superhighway", a network must offer near-broadcast standard two-way audio and video communication so that, for example, children could practise 바카라사이트ir French with similar-age children in a French school.

This standard of service cannot be delivered over existing telephone lines or even over 바카라사이트 basic-rate Integrated Services Data Network offered by BT. Education superhighway would have to rely ei바카라사이트r on cable television networks, or on dedicated optical fibre connections.

The higher education funding councils' Joint Information Systems Committee has already raised 바카라사이트 possibility of connecting schools to SuperJANET. JISC's consultation document, published at 바카라사이트 beginning of April, stressed 바카라사이트 role of higher education institutions as centres of expertise to business and 바카라사이트 community.

"There are thus good reasons for wishing to see o바카라사이트r bodies, such as schools, companies and o바카라사이트r external organisations, connecting to JANET and SuperJANET," 바카라사이트 document said.

Superhighways for Education is available from HMSO or on 바카라사이트 World Wide Web, at hmsoinfo.gov.uk/hmso/publicat/ document/supered.html.
