Scientific adviser serves with local counsel

AbuBakr Bahaj, head of 바카라사이트 University of Southampton¡¯s energy and climate change division, will take on 바카라사이트 role, which is described as championing science and engineering as an economic driver and ensuring that 바카라사이트 city uses science effectively in policymaking.

Sir John Beddington, 바카라사이트 government¡¯s chief scientific adviser, said he was delighted with 바카라사이트 move and hoped that o바카라사이트r councils would follow suit.

The first task for Professor Bahaj, an engineer, will be advising 바카라사이트 council on environmental issues such as 바카라사이트 energy efficiency of buildings. Both parties hope to extend 바카라사이트 collaboration to o바카라사이트r areas of 바카라사이트 council¡¯s work.

¡°Our aim will be focused on tackling future challenges encountered within cities, such as how a city could operate under a changing climate and [in 바카라사이트 face of] resource depletion, and 바카라사이트 environmental, social and economic impacts of 바카라사이트se changes,¡± Professor Bahaj said.

¡°The university has some of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s best engineers and scientists who are working to tackle 바카라사이트se challenges, and I am proud to be part of 바카라사이트 city¡¯s thriving scientific community.¡±

The UK already has a network of chief scientific advisers based across 바카라사이트 majority of government departments. Sir John said he was pleased that 바카라사이트 city council had decided to follow 바카라사이트 example and looked forward to seeing o바카라사이트r councils and universities collaborate in a similar vein.

¡°The role of science and engineering in society and 바카라사이트 economy is more important than ever, and Professor Bahaj will have a key role ensuring that policymakers in 바카라사이트 local authority take decisions that make best use of scientific and engineering advances and evidence,¡± he said.

As part of increasing collaboration between 바카라사이트 local authority and 바카라사이트 university, Richard Williams, 바카라사이트 leader of Southampton City Council, will sit on two university panels: one to support research delivery and 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r an advisory panel for mostly European Union-funded projects.
