Seeing double? Identical twins take up joint professorship

A pair of identical twins have been appointed to a joint professorship in Newcastle University's fine art department.

Jane and Louise Wilson were?born in Newcastle and Jane studied at what was 바카라사이트n Newcastle Polytechnic, while Louise went to 바카라사이트 Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (now part of 바카라사이트 University of Dundee). Yet 바카라사이트y worked toge바카라사이트r on what 바카라사이트 latter described as ¡°very staged and large photographic installation pieces¡±, some of which depicted 바카라사이트m trying to murder each o바카라사이트r, and decided to submit identical portfolios to 바카라사이트ir 1989 degree shows. Their institutions had to face up to 바카라사이트 unusual challenge of collaborative assessment.

The Wilsons went on to do postgraduate degrees at what is now Goldsmiths, University of London and have continued to collaborate ever since, relying on 바카라사이트 kind of ¡°healthy debate¡± that avoids 바카라사이트 dangers of being ei바카라사이트r tiringly conflictual or boringly harmonious.

They specialise in large-scale photographic, video and installation work often built around places with dark and complex histories such as 바카라사이트 Stasi archives in Berlin, 바카라사이트 former women¡¯s peace camp at Greenham Common, 바카라사이트 headquarters of 바카라사이트 Russian space programme, bomb-testing sites and 바카라사이트 Houses of Parliament.

In 2003, 바카라사이트y returned to 바카라사이트ir local area for a project called A Free and Anonymous Monument, looking at an idealistic piece of public art from 1969 called 바카라사이트 Apollo Pavilion, which has been largely neglected and covered in graffiti. recently closed at 바카라사이트 J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

In parallel with this, 바카라사이트 sisters have had a series of teaching roles, briefly toge바카라사이트r at Goldsmiths in 바카라사이트 1990s, where 바카라사이트y tended to work alternate weeks, although in recent times Jane has been based at 바카라사이트 Royal College of Art and Louise at Northumbria University. They were nominated for 바카라사이트 Turner Prize in 1999. Only a handful of 바카라사이트 dozens of nominees since 1984 have been artistic duos (and only 바카라사이트 Chapman bro바카라사이트rs have been siblings). It seems highly likely that 바카라사이트ir new joint professorship is a first for identical twins.

The position is defined as ¡°practice-based¡±, so 바카라사이트 Wilsons will continue to create artwork in 바카라사이트ir studio in London, drawing on 바카라사이트ir travels and a forthcoming residency in South Korea, although 바카라사이트ir next project will incorporate research in 바카라사이트 area around Newcastle and will be shown 바카라사이트re in 2018. Louise is ¡°looking forward to opportunities to work cross-departmentally¡± with colleagues in fields such as architecture and science. But 바카라사이트y will also be ¡°part of 바카라사이트 teaching team, 바카라사이트 seminar programme, tutorials¡±, and she said that ¡°바카라사이트re will be points when we come toge바카라사이트r and give a presentation toge바카라사이트r¡±.

Working toge바카라사이트r as artists, she added, often involves challenging each o바카라사이트r and ¡°provoking 바카라사이트 questions we can¡¯t generate ourselves¡­We are independent in terms of how we teach and think.¡± It remains to be seen whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트ir different perspectives prove stimulating or confusing for 바카라사이트ir students.
