Shokalskiy scientists remain trapped in Antarctic

The Russian vessel is being used by 바카라사이트 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by a professor of climate change at 바카라사이트 University of New South Wales.

The trip hoped to follow in 바카라사이트 footsteps of explorer Douglas Mawson, who undertook 바카라사이트 first complete study of 바카라사이트 region 100 years ago.

But on Christmas Eve, 바카라사이트 vessel, known as 바카라사이트 Shokalskiy, became surrounded in a thick pack of ice and could not move, according to a blog posted on 바카라사이트 expedition website by one of 바카라사이트 science team. The ship lies 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart in Tasmania.

The captain sent out a distress signal that was received by 바카라사이트 Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) on Christmas Day. The authority dispatched three icebreaking ships to help free 바카라사이트 vessel. The first arrived on December and attempted to free 바카라사이트 Shokalskiy overnight but could not.

A Chinese vessel equipped with a helicopter is also in 바카라사이트 vicinity of 바카라사이트 Shokalskiy. This may be used if 바카라사이트 Australian icebreaker is unable to reach 바카라사이트 vessel, according to 바카라사이트 AMSA.

Media reports and blogs from those trapped on board suggest that research is continuing despite 바카라사이트 hiatus.

The majority of academics on board are from 바카라사이트 University of New South Wales.
