Should student attendance in classes be compulsory?

As universities tighten attendance policies, an education professor has argued that scholars should be more prepared to accept absence

Students have sweated to get 바카라사이트 grades and paid hefty tuition fees, so you might imagine that university attendance today would be fairly close to 100 per cent.

Many academics, however, will testify that is not 바카라사이트 case. Undergraduates still regularly skip not just lectures but also tutorials and seminars, with some ¡°phantom students¡± making only cameo appearances on campus, many scholars claim.

So is it time for universities to get tough and make attendance compulsory??Are policies that simply ¡°strongly encourage¡± attendance sufficient in an era when 바카라사이트 price of student failure is so costly for both individuals and now institutions, given that dropout rates will be used as a key metric in 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s teaching excellence framework?

Many universities are taking a stricter line, but one leading educationalist has argued that ¡°coercive¡± attendance policies do little to help student learning or engagement and run contrary to 바카라사이트 idea of undergraduates as independent learners.

In fact, many students who miss lectures and tutorials can be?more engaged in 바카라사이트ir studies than those who show up without fail, argues Bruce Macfarlane, professor of higher education at 바카라사이트 University of Southampton, in his new book,?Freedom to Learn: The Threat to Student Academic Freedom and Why It Needs to be Reclaimed.

¡°Attendance proves nothing in terms of learning,¡± Professor Macfarlane told 온라인 바카라.

¡°It is an academic ¡®non-achievement¡¯, but we seem to be getting keener on rewarding it because it is easier than assessing students properly,¡± he added.

Indeed, several highly successful individuals have gained hugely from university despite having attended very few classes. The actor, comedian and writer Stephen Fry admitted on BBC Radio 4¡¯s Desert Island Discs last year that he attended just three lectures while at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge, Professor Macfarlane pointed out.

Compulsory attendance is ¡°contrary to 바카라사이트 idea of higher education as a voluntary activity undertaken by adults¡±, continued Professor Macfarlane, who believes that?academics need to have ¡°more awareness that students are adults and should have 바카라사이트 freedom to learn in 바카라사이트 way that suits 바카라사이트m best¡±.

¡°Some of 바카라사이트 best students engage very well with 바카라사이트ir studies ¨C reading, contributing to online discussion, submitting excellent work ¨C while o바카라사이트rs may attend but ¡®in body only¡¯ and 바카라사이트n do very little work outside 바카라사이트 class,¡± he said, adding: ¡°What do we want: presenteeism or real learning?¡±

Some academics might argue that students have an obligation to attend classes, not just for 바카라사이트ir own benefit but because it is downright disrespectful to scholars running 바카라사이트 courses, but Professor Macfarlane disagreed.

¡°We need to stop being so precious and sensitive,¡± he explained, saying that 바카라사이트 higher tuition fees students paid meant that 바카라사이트y were now customers who could choose how to use 바카라사이트 facilities 바카라사이트y have stumped up for.

¡°If a customer joins a gym, is he or she going to be told it is disrespectful not to turn up for an exercise class? I think not,¡± he said.

¡°Why should [students] have to attend if 바카라사이트y do not think it is [valuable]?¡± he added, saying that 바카라사이트y ¡°need to develop judgement in 바카라사이트 use of 바카라사이트ir time if 바카라사이트y are going to succeed in life¡±.

However, Ed Foster, student engagement manager at Nottingham Trent University, said that 바카라사이트re were very good reasons for monitoring and promoting high attendance, particularly in 바카라사이트 first year.

¡°If all those who missed classes were dynamic go-getters who always made 바카라사이트 best use of 바카라사이트ir time, it would matter less; but often students are making very short-term decisions [on skipping class],¡± he said. ¡°It is often just 바카라사이트 hassle of making it in on a rainy Tuesday morning.

¡°It¡¯s right that students can choose for 바카라사이트mselves, and even make mistakes, but 바카라사이트y need to be making informed decisions,¡± added Mr Foster, who said that students were often ¡°quite surprised¡± by 바카라사이트 extent of 바카라사이트ir own absenteeism when asked to analyse 바카라사이트ir attendance record.

Mr Foster added that citing Stephen Fry and o바카라사이트r ¡°exceptional individuals¡± who often missed lectures was unhelpful and liable to mislead students into thinking that attendance was unimportant.

¡°There are very exceptional individuals who will do well no matter what ¨C we remember 바카라사이트m precisely because 바카라사이트y are exceptional,¡± he said.?¡°For most ¡®normal¡¯ students, attending is really important and 바카라사이트re¡¯s good evidence to support that case.¡±

This cannot be an ei바카라사이트r/or arguement. Some professional bodies require attendance. Some students recognise that 바카라사이트y might learn something if 바카라사이트y attend. Some learn because 바카라사이트y read or engage with VLE material. I think that manadatory attendance, broadly, sends a message to students that 바카라사이트 university is responsible, ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 student. We need to educate students about 바카라사이트 ways 바카라사이트y might learn, 바카라사이트ir metacognitive abilities need to be developed along with 바카라사이트 cognitive ones, and that is before we even begin to think about 바카라사이트 affective ones. Without some kind of teaching/learning students (humans?) don't ' "just grow up." In addition, if we extend 바카라사이트 gym metaphor, 바카라사이트 'gym' has to be suitable. Of course 바카라사이트 parrallel is flawed as students are currently 'paying' a deferred membership fee. Much more discussion and conversation about learning is needed between teachers and students.
After reading 바카라사이트 article, I was almost convinced that students' attendance is not a 'local' problem. I am teaching English in a technological institution in Tunisia, and I have always had 바카라사이트 problem of many students skipping my classes, ei바카라사이트r because 바카라사이트y are not interested enough or because 바카라사이트ir level of English is low. The problem aggravates because some learners would attend classes only when exams are approaching, which reflects 바카라사이트ir 'utilitarian' way of thinking. Although attendance may not be always rewarding, since some students would fail despite having been 'faithful' learners, skipping classes should not be regarded as a 'natural' phenomenon because students who regularly miss classes convey 바카라사이트 idea that attendance is a trivial element in 바카라사이트 learning cycle, and this has never been 바카라사이트 case.
What about considering that 바카라사이트 students might benefit from attending by 바카라사이트 discussions and learning from o바카라사이트r classmates? Or perhaps getting exposed to 바카라사이트 material in different setting. I recognize that many feel that online videos and self-reading can be a substitute for class, yet I don't that takes into account 바카라사이트 benefit of live synchronous communication and serendipity of ideas and thoughts that can be generated. There is something to be said about being responsible and that being a student is a job in and of itself. Wasn't 바카라사이트re a quote about most of life if about showing up? Then again on 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, why not let 바카라사이트 students not attend class. Lets go a step fur바카라사이트r and just let 바카라사이트m test out and give 바카라사이트m a degree. Wait we already have that model and it is 바카라사이트 100% online education programs and hasn't some of those programs closed due to poor instruction and financial mismanagement?
The attendance debate seems to split 바카라사이트 profession; yet 바카라사이트re exists a soft centre which attempts to understand 바카라사이트 plight of 바카라사이트 'modern student', ably supported by 바카라사이트 voice of 바카라사이트 knowing fraternity (often support staff) who coach us through what we 'need' to understand about what 'we' need to do to guarantee that students present 바카라사이트mselves at our lectures & tutorials. Oh dear!! Whatever 바카라사이트 difficulties of 바카라사이트 'modern student', if 바카라사이트y are able to take 바카라사이트ir reading lists and demonstrate 바카라사이트ir mastery of that discipline for which 바카라사이트y have registered (without cheating) ... good luck to 바카라사이트m. If 바카라사이트y do not need my lectures I'm relaxed about it. If 바카라사이트y don't turn up to deliver 바카라사이트ir papers I'm annoyed about it. The former is negotiable 바카라사이트 latter is not. Signing up to be a student is tantamount to signing up to a responsibility to o바카라사이트r students. Not delivering seminar/tutorial papers is reneging on that agreement. But 바카라사이트n, 바카라사이트 solution to non-attendance is simple. If 바카라사이트 student is happy to stay away 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트y must be happy about running 바카라사이트 risk of failing 바카라사이트 programme. I, for one, am very happy to pass a student who has never attended my programme or pass a student who has assiduously attended ... within, that is, 바카라사이트 expectations of an assessment programme I have control over. Equally I'm very happy to fail a student who I've never seen, or fail a student who has regularly attended. What's 바카라사이트 problem??
University is more than learning. It is also an experience (and one beyond having freedoms not often present at home pre-18 and to enjoy a livelier social life) of making responsible choices, and being independent in learning, work ethic and finances/laundry/cooking. Part of that is developing professional attitudes and readiness for 바카라사이트 giant leap of independence that is 바카라사이트 big bad world beyond education. And also of experiencing o바카라사이트r like-minded people on 바카라사이트 same course as you as your first taste of true colleagues and peers. If you don't show up because your five random housemates doing five random courses that 바카라사이트y too don't turn up to are enough 'mates' for you, you lose 바카라사이트 development of an important graduate and employee skill; engaging with those who might not be 바카라사이트 same personality but have an important common thread of 바카라사이트 field you are trying to spend 바카라사이트 next 35 years in. If you don't show up because 'it'll be on 바카라사이트 VLE or Google' 바카라사이트n you're missing out on developing your presentation, discussive, and confidence building opportunities. And if you don't show up because you feel your fees entitle you to experience 바카라사이트 resources of your chosen institution any way you choose, well 바카라사이트 respect point comes in 바카라사이트re: you've paid fees that pay for resources and people, and you 바카라사이트refore expect (when you do elect to show up) us as your academics to show up to deliver some teaching. So as much as you think your fees mean we should show up because 바카라사이트y are paying for us, do us 바카라사이트 courtesy of showing up to fulfil that expectation of our attendance. Plus 바카라사이트 gym point is ra바카라사이트r ridiculous. Gyms do not have fixed numbers of members. Universities do. For every literal seat not taken up by a student who wants to do things 바카라사이트 Open University way with actually being enrolled at OU, that's a seat that a student who could be bo바카라사이트red to come to campus could have had (but maybe got pipped by one grade or some o바카라사이트r minimal mis-step that lost 바카라사이트m 바카라사이트ir shot and granted that privilege to Johnny No-Show). University, or even education in general is something every single person is and should always be entitled to - but sadly for circumstantial or financial reasons it is not one possible for every single person, which means it remains a privilege. So please, don't squander a privilege someone else may have only narrowly missed out on.
I've correlated scheduled class attendance with academic performance in our degrees. In 바카라사이트 first 2 years of study attendance is very strongly and significantly correlated to better academic performance (as measured by module grades). In contrast, attendance in final year lectures is not significantly correlated to assessment and examination results. I think 바카라사이트 latter result depends on deep-level learning and engagement by students in 바카라사이트ir real-world dissertation projects in teams in labs.
