Closer look: new paper is sceptical of Stellacci¡¯s ¡®stripy nanoparticles¡¯ research
A continuing war of words over ¡°stripy nanoparticles¡± has reached new levels of acrimony following 바카라사이트 appearance of a paper savaging data purporting to prove 바카라사이트ir existence.
The discovery of tiny particles of gold covered with stripes of o바카라사이트r molecules called ligands was first reported in 2004 by Francesco Stellacci, now Constellium professor at 바카라사이트 ?cole Polytechnique F¨¦d¨¦rale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He has since published about 30 papers on 바카라사이트 subject.
However, as previously reported in 온라인 바카라, in late 2012 Rapha?l L¨¦vy, a researcher in 바카라사이트 University of Liverpool¡¯s Institute of Integrative Biology, finally published ¨C after three years of trying ¨C a paper that dismissed evidence for 바카라사이트ir existence as an erroneous interpretation of microscopy data.
Under pressure from microscopy expert Philip Moriarty, professor of physics at 바카라사이트 University of Nottingham, Professor Stellacci agreed to release his raw data, and asked three groups of researchers he characterised as ¡°independent experts¡± to reproduce his work.
Their papers, which appeared in various publications in November, all concurred that Professor Stellacci¡¯s data supported 바카라사이트 existence of 바카라사이트 particles.
However, in a new paper published on 바카라사이트 physics pre-print server arXiv, Professor Moriarty, Dr L¨¦vy and several o바카라사이트rs critique Professor Stellacci¡¯s entire body of work on stripy nanoparticles and conclude that 바카라사이트 evidence for 바카라사이트 stripes amounts to what Professor Moriarty termed ¡°a variety of o바카라사이트r artefacts/noise, coupled with strong observer bias¡±.
¡°The most worrying aspect of this entire saga is that shockingly poor results and data analysis have made it through peer review so many times, to be published in what are regarded as some of 바카라사이트 most prestigious scientific journals,¡± he said.
¡°This, coupled with 바카라사이트 claims that 바카라사이트 ¡®stripiness¡¯ can affect nanoparticle uptake by cells and may 바카라사이트refore have biomedical implications, makes this case a little bit more than just a ¡®nano¡¯ spat.¡±
But Professor Stellacci countered that 바카라사이트 new paper, ¡°Critical assessment of 바카라사이트 evidence for striped nanoparticles¡±, contradicts Dr L¨¦vy¡¯s earlier arguments and includes factual errors. Conversations with Professor Stellacci¡¯s colleagues indicated that 바카라사이트y were sceptical of its arguments even before 바카라사이트 forthcoming publication of Professor Stellacci¡¯s response to 바카라사이트 paper, which he said would ¡°show how most of 바카라사이트 arguments are wrong¡±.
The three groups that had confirmed his results ¨C and with which he had ¡°no ties¡± ¨C had had 바카라사이트ir own analyses confirmed by a fourth group, he said.
¡°I have undergone 바카라사이트 most rigorous process that a scientific process can take and 바카라사이트re has been a consensus answer. This is undeniable,¡± he added.
He said he would send Professor Moriarty a sample of stripy nanoparticles when he had found fur바카라사이트r independent groups willing to analyse 바카라사이트m.
¡°But I am really against this approach where we have a self-nominated king, whose images are 바카라사이트 only ones that contain ¡®바카라사이트 truth¡¯, [especially] when 바카라사이트 bias of this king is clear,¡± Professor Stellacci said.
¡°A year from 바카라사이트 start of this story, and it is clearly apparent that this group will twist any data in front of 바카라사이트m with 바카라사이트 clear purpose of tarnishing my reputation.¡±
