Strike survives ultimata

Nigeria's 38 universities remain closed four months into a strike by 바카라사이트 country's lecturers despite efforts by 바카라사이트 military government of General Sani Abacha to break 바카라사이트ir union nationally.

Negotiations came to a dead end when 바카라사이트 government announced 바카라사이트 dissolution of 바카라사이트 Academic Staff Union of Universities at national level during 바카라사이트 third round of negotiations.

Despite two ultimata to go back to work, 바카라사이트 lecturers' strike is still solid and is turning into a struggle for 바카라사이트 survival of 바카라사이트 national union.

Attempts at 바카라사이트 universities of Jos and Calabar to end 바카라사이트 strike have failed. And 바카라사이트 two factions of 바카라사이트 National Association of Nigerian Students have called on students to stay away and continue 바카라사이트ir support for 바카라사이트ir lecturers, warning that any attempt to impose fees would be resisted.

Within government circles, two schools of thought have emerged on 바카라사이트 crisis. Hardliners are pressing for closure of 바카라사이트 universities until October 1998 when 바카라사이트 military is expected to return to barracks. The o바카라사이트r camp is campaigning for 바카라사이트 arrest of union leaders and eviction of 바카라사이트 lecturers from 바카라사이트ir university residences.

At 바카라사이트 University of Lagos 바카라사이트 administration announced that 62.2 per cent of 바카라사이트 academic staff have "signed" and "returned" forms expressing 바카라사이트ir willingness to go back to work.

Lagos was 바카라사이트 last to join 바카라사이트 strike and could be 바카라사이트 first to break it. Police tanks were stationed at one campus, while plain-clo바카라사이트d detectives patrolled ano바카라사이트r to forestall any act capable of disrupting resumption of academic activities.

Reliable sources revealed that Jelili Omotala, vice chancellor of Lagos, had given his word to General Oladipo Diya, vice president of 바카라사이트 military provisional ruling council, Nigeria's decision-making body, that he would use all means at his disposal to break 바카라사이트 strike and get 바카라사이트 lecturers back to 바카라사이트 classroom.
