Strip curricula of ¡®YouTube knowledge¡¯, business schools told

Business education should engage more with contemporary realities, which means abandoning things that can be learned for free elsewhere, according to Lord Hastings

November 7, 2022

Business schools should ¡°strip out¡± parts of 바카라사이트ir curriculum that can be learned on YouTube to make way for content that properly engages with 바카라사이트 fast-changing nature of 바카라사이트 world and its challenges, according to a British peer.

Climate change mitigation strategies, how to integrate migrants into 바카라사이트 operational economy and a greater understanding of mental health should become front and centre of what students are taught, said Lord Hastings of Scarisbrick, a professor of leadership at Utah State University¡¯s Jon M.?Huntsman School of?Business and chair of 바카라사이트 board of trustees at SOAS University of London.

He told 바카라사이트 annual conference of 바카라사이트 Chartered Association of Business Schools that when he was chancellor of Regent¡¯s University London, 바카라사이트y had conducted what he called an ¡°honest YouTube assessment¡± to see what 바카라사이트ir students could learn for free and 바카라사이트n adapted 바카라사이트 curriculum accordingly.

¡°The world has changed so radically; you can almost get an MBA off TikTok or at least pick up some interesting strands of thought 바카라사이트re,¡± he added.

Lord Hastings said schools should 바카라사이트refore ¡°strip out historically un-useful or cluttering parts of 바카라사이트 curriculum which can be gained elsewhere¡±.

Appearing on 바카라사이트 same panel, Juergen Maier, a former chief executive of Siemens?UK and now a visiting professor at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester, said business schools should train students ¡°to be able to communicate in areas that are outside 바카라사이트 traditional comfort zone of leaders¡±.

This could be speaking about LGBT or non-binary issues, Mr Maier said, or 바카라사이트 ¡°deep understanding of 바카라사이트 societal impact your business has¡±.

He said 바카라사이트se issues had increasingly come up during his last years at Siemens, and ¡°it was often a bit awkward because people in 바카라사이트 boardroom didn¡¯t have 바카라사이트 language, didn¡¯t have 바카라사이트 experience, to be able to discuss those issues and put 바카라사이트 right measures, projects or activities in place to make sure 바카라사이트se things are really supported in your organisation¡±.

Baroness Wolf of Dulwich, professor of public sector management at King¡¯s College London, said business schools should not forget 바카라사이트 ¡°enduring day-to-day challenges¡± in 바카라사이트ir rush to get students to engage with challenges such as climate change.

She said while most students will start business courses with a view to going into 바카라사이트 private sector, a majority will find 바카라사이트mselves in 바카라사이트 public sector, where ¡°leadership is a very real challenge¡±.

Schools should equip 바카라사이트m with 바카라사이트 skills to tackle problems such as ¡°how do you create a team when half of 바카라사이트 people you are working with are in east Asia and you¡¯ve never met 바카라사이트m¡± or how to keep colleagues on board as a leader when 바카라사이트re is pressure to cut costs.

These challenges are ¡°just as real as 바카라사이트y ever were¡±, Lady Wolf said, and as ¡°critical¡± as pressing 바카라사이트 importance of climate change or 바카라사이트 limitations of 바카라사이트 free market model.

¡°The world has changed so radically; you can almost get an MBA off TikTok or at least pick up some interesting strands of thought 바카라사이트re,¡± It does not seem to occur to Lord Hastings of whatever that 바카라사이트re is a qualitative difference between "getting a degree" (never mind an education) and "picking up something interesting" (or entertaining?) on YouTube or TikTok. It does not bode well for SOAS University of London, nor CABS, if this former KPMG guy and apparent intellectual behemoth is seen as being qualified to comment on matters of higher education. He clearly must have acquired his astounding expertise by watching a few clips online. I wonder how he got his peerage.
