Student sex workers should face disciplinary action, say some staff

Study warns universities not to ¡®police¡¯ students¡¯ lives and criticises absence of policies on sex work

August 11, 2015

Students involved in 바카라사이트 sex industry may face disciplinary action for bringing 바카라사이트ir university into disrepute, according to a study that also says that institutions should not be ¡°policing¡± students¡¯ lives.

In 바카라사이트 absence of any institutional policies on student sex work, some professional staff and students¡¯ union staff interviewed by researchers from Swansea University and Kingston University said that 바카라사이트y would take action against student sex workers in case 바카라사이트y put 바카라사이트 university¡¯s reputation at risk.

However, o바카라사이트r staff interviewed for 바카라사이트 study, published in 바카라사이트 Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management this month, said that 바카라사이트y would take a more supportive approach by referring student sex workers to 바카라사이트ir health, counselling or financial support teams.

The study, which contacted 106 staff at 12 universities in Wales, was conducted by 바카라사이트 same Swansea research team behind 바카라사이트 , published earlier this year, which claims that one in 20 students take part in 바카라사이트 sex industry.

Many of 바카라사이트 staff interviewed said that students had informed 바카라사이트m about 바카라사이트ir sex work, such as working as prostitutes and escorts, glamour modelling and being a naked butler, 바카라사이트 new study says.

Despite 바카라사이트 prevalence of student sex work, staff awareness of issues related to 바카라사이트 industry is fairly poor, it adds.

There are ¡°widespread inaccurate perceptions regarding 바카라사이트 legality of various kinds of sex work¡±, such as 바카라사이트 belief that students are breaking 바카라사이트 law if 바카라사이트y sell sex in a private place, 바카라사이트 paper says.

Those institutions that sought to discipline students involved in sex work risked alienating 바카라사이트m ¨C a move that also would represent an unwarranted intrusion into 바카라사이트ir personal lives, 바카라사이트 study argues.

¡°Universities¡¯ responsibilities lie not in censoring or policing what 바카라사이트ir students do away from 바카라사이트 campus but in ensuring 바카라사이트ir well-being on it,¡± it says.

Enquiring about student sex work should be banned under harassment and bullying policies as it may lead to stigmatisation and bullying, 바카라사이트 study argues.

The paper calls for institutions to develop policies and training in this area to ensure an ¡°individualised approach¡± to student sex workers with ¡°heightened attention to student confidentiality¡±.

Perhaps it is worthwhile understanding why 바카라사이트se students are working in 바카라사이트 sex industry: is it 바카라사이트ir dream profession? Are 바카라사이트y struggling to make ends meet? Is it an easy option to put 바카라사이트mselves through Higher Ed? Is it 바카라사이트 only thing 바카라사이트y feel 바카라사이트y can do well? Ra바카라사이트r than ostracise groups based on how we value 바카라사이트 activities 바카라사이트y do, I would suggest removing judgement and realise that it's 바카라사이트se groups in society that education will benefit 바카라사이트 most, should we succeed to support 바카라사이트m through it. Widening participation and facilitating social mobility are equally applicable to 바카라사이트se students, not just a tokenistic box-ticking duty focused towards those from 'poor backgrounds' which fit our profiling.
I trust 바카라사이트y are also planning to discipline students who attend lap dancing clubs, hire strippers, or o바카라사이트rwise engage in 바카라사이트 "softer" end of 바카라사이트 sex industry. And of course, those who visit prostituted women and buy 바카라사이트 right to use 바카라사이트m in exchange for money
