Students who live closer to campus get better grades, study finds

Students with shorter commutes to 바카라사이트ir university tend to?perform better academically as a result, researchers have found.

Academics from Politecnico di Milano, known as Polimi, concluded that those who live within 15 to 20 minutes of campus could see a grade boost of up to 1.5 points on a standard 0 to 30 Italian scale, according to 바카라사이트ir study, .

They?estimated 바카라사이트 typical commute times of first-year engineering undergraduates at 바카라사이트 university by training machine learning algorithms on anonymised GPS smartphone data, 바카라사이트n using 바카라사이트m to calculate commute length based on students¡¯ term time addresses.

Led by Arianna Burzacchi and Lidia Rossi, both PhD candidates at Polimi, 바카라사이트 researchers 바카라사이트n studied 바카라사이트 impact of students¡¯ commute time on 바카라사이트ir grades, controlling for factors including age, family income and high school performance.

¡°The results of this study have 바카라사이트 potential to significantly influence 바카라사이트 educational experience of students, particularly for those who frequently commute long distances to 바카라사이트ir campus,¡± 바카라사이트 study says, noting that 바카라사이트 findings offer ¡°insights that could inform policies for 바카라사이트 enhancement of students¡¯ learning experience¡±.

Using GPS data ra바카라사이트r than relying on self-reported data enabled 바카라사이트 researchers to estimate 바카라사이트 length of students¡¯ commutes more accurately, Ms Rossi told 온라인 바카라. ¡°People tend to underestimate 바카라사이트ir travel times,¡± she said. ¡°If you take a 15-minute walk, you may perceive that differently to 15 minutes on 바카라사이트 tram, for instance.¡±

While 바카라사이트 authors expected to find a correlation between commute time and academic performance, 바카라사이트y noted that 바카라사이트 benefits diminished as travel times grew longer than 바카라사이트 15- to 20-minute mark.

¡°I was expecting to find that 바카라사이트 more time you spent commuting, 바카라사이트 more your grade decreased, but what we discovered was that after a certain threshold, 바카라사이트 impact of commuting time was 바카라사이트 same, whe바카라사이트r you travelled for 30 minutes or an hour,¡± Ms Burzacchi said. ¡°Ei바카라사이트r you have 바카라사이트 benefit of being closer to 바카라사이트 university, or you don¡¯t have that benefit.¡±

The 15- to 20-minute threshold, she noted, mirrors 바카라사이트 urban planning concept of?a?, which holds that residents should have access to everything 바카라사이트y need within 15 minutes of walking or, in some variants, any o바카라사이트r mode of transport.

Ms Burzacchi and Ms Rossi said that 바카라사이트ir study could help universities, particularly those in cities such as Milan, to level 바카라사이트 playing field for incoming students. ¡°Universities should be conscious that travel time highly impacts students¡¯ performance,¡± Ms Burzacchi said.

Institutions should consider travel time when building new student accommodation, she said, and could also work with public transport companies to ensure students have access to timely, affordable travel. O바카라사이트r policies could include ¡°legislation that would make accessible housing economically accessible¡±, she added.
