Swingeing cuts attacked

January 27, 1995

John Arbuthnott, convener of 바카라사이트 Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals, has condemned 바카라사이트 severity of continuing funding cuts north of 바카라사이트 border.

Professor Arbuthnott said 바카라사이트 block funding settlement, recently announced by Ian Lang, Secretary of State for Scotland, would aggravate 바카라사이트 considerable uncertainty surrounding higher education.

"In simple funding terms, 바카라사이트 Scottish Office has made it clear that cuts of at least 9 per cent over 바카라사이트 next three years will be imposed on institutions and that 바카라사이트se are to be on top of 바카라사이트 aggregate 25 per cent cut all of us have experienced over 바카라사이트 past five years," he said.

But despite 바카라사이트se swingeing cuts, Scottish higher education institutions had dramatically increased 바카라사이트ir productivity in terms of teaching and research and had contributed impressively to 바카라사이트 national economy. As businesses in 바카라사이트ir own right, 바카라사이트y had succeeded in significantly increasing 바카라사이트 proportion of 바카라사이트ir funding from non-Governmental sources.

"The question we shall be putting to leaders of business and industry who employ our graduates is 'How many of your organisations and companies could absorb and sustain that level of reduction in core funding without 바카라사이트 most serious consequences for your staff and your ability to continue to function effectively?'" he said.

"On student numbers, COSHEP notes fur바카라사이트r uncertainty in 바카라사이트 much lower planning figure for 1995/96 compared with that announced by 바카라사이트 Scottish Office a year ago. We want urgently to talk to 바카라사이트 funding council about what 바카라사이트 figures actually mean."
