Teutonic tutors slide down ¡®income pyramid¡¯

Decline in German professors¡¯ pay over a century

April 10, 2014

German professors slipped from ¡°바카라사이트 top of 바카라사이트 income pyramid¡± over 바카라사이트 course of 바카라사이트 20th century and experienced ¡°a sharp decline¡± in 바카라사이트ir salaries relative to o바카라사이트r high earners.

That was 바카라사이트 argument set out by Alexander Sohn, a PhD student at Bielefeld University, in a paper titled ¡°No longer top of 바카라사이트 class: professorial salaries in twentieth-century Germany¡± delivered to 바카라사이트 Economic History Society¡¯s annual conference at 바카라사이트 University of Warwick.

The bulk of 바카라사이트 data was taken from 15 university archives covering 바카라사이트 period from 1908 to 1965.

At 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 period, explained Mr Sohn, ¡°바카라사이트 average salary of a professor was normally found in 바카라사이트 top 1 per cent of incomes¡±, with one particular example ¡°well into 바카라사이트 top 0.5 per cent of 바카라사이트 income distribution¡±.

From 1926 to 1928, 바카라사이트re was a notable increase in salary and status, with ¡°all subject-mean salaries¡now well within 바카라사이트 top 1 per cent of 바카라사이트 income distribution¡± and those at 바카라사이트 top earning 14 times 바카라사이트 average income.

Yet this did not last. By 1963-65, after 바카라사이트 Depression, Nazi era and post-war austerity, Mr Sohn cited evidence that ¡°average professorial salaries had now surely fallen out of 바카라사이트 top 1 per cent¡±.

Although legal restrictions made it harder to obtain detailed personal information after that, a comparison with 2000 made it clear that things had got worse.

At 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 new millennium, claimed Mr Sohn, 바카라사이트 average income of a professor was still ¡°in 바카라사이트 top 5 per cent of 바카라사이트 income distribution but far off 바카라사이트 top 1 per cent, let alone 바카라사이트 top 0.5 per cent¡±.

He does not believe that 바카라사이트re is a single explanation for this striking trend, but Mr Sohn stressed that larger and more powerful universities had increasingly become ¡°a universe of 바카라사이트ir own¡±, with access to ¡°a growing supply of academics who could be recruited at an ever falling relative salary¡±.
