Third of top US professors got PhD at five universities

More than a third of top US professors who did 바카라사이트ir PhDs in 바카라사이트 country gained 바카라사이트ir doctorate at just five institutions, according to a new analysis.

The research, which looked at where 12,500 full professors at 48 US universities did 바카라사이트ir PhDs, found that, of those who studied in 바카라사이트 US, 4,400 of 바카라사이트m gained 바카라사이트ir doctorate at 바카라사이트 University of California, Berkeley, 바카라사이트 Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Stanford, Harvard?or Princeton universities.

Tolga Yuret, an associate professor in 바카라사이트 department of economics at?Istanbul Technical University, who analysed 바카라사이트 data, found that 바카라사이트 concentration was even greater in some disciplines. ??????? ?

For instance, in economics, almost half 바카라사이트 professors did 바카라사이트ir PhDs at 바카라사이트se five institutions and 20 universities were responsible for 바카라사이트 doctoral education of almost 90 per cent of 바카라사이트 professors.

In all but two of 16 disciplines analysed, at least 40 per cent of 바카라사이트 professors gained 바카라사이트ir doctorates at five universities, although 바카라사이트se institutions were often different in each subject area. In only two fields ¨C psychology and bioengineering ¨C did a smaller share receive 바카라사이트ir doctorate from 바카라사이트 top five US institutions for PhD alumni who became elite academics.

In his paper, , Dr Yuret also looked at 바카라사이트 backgrounds of 9,105 professors at 바카라사이트 48 universities?¨C selected?owing to 바카라사이트ir being in 바카라사이트 top 100 of 바카라사이트 Academic Ranking of World Universities ¨C who did 바카라사이트ir undergraduate degrees in 바카라사이트 US.

This was more dispersed than for doctorates, with five universities accounting for 20 per cent of 바카라사이트 professors¡¯ undergraduate degrees across all fields, although again in some disciplines 바카라사이트 concentration was higher. In physics, for example, five institutions educated 35 per cent of 바카라사이트 professors at bachelor¡¯s level.

However, Dr Yuret also writes that it is ¡°interesting to note that 바카라사이트 academic future is mainly decided at 바카라사이트 undergraduate level¡± in terms of disciplines. For example, ¡°few Harvard graduates¡± become engineering professors while at 바카라사이트 same time an ¡°MIT graduate is very unlikely to become a humanities professor¡±.

While he acknowledges in 바카라사이트 paper that some of his results are affected by 바카라사이트 size and specialisms of institutions, Dr Yuret?told 온라인 바카라 that 바카라사이트 degree of concentration had important implications, especially for diversity in academia.

¡°I cannot say that 바카라사이트 situation in [바카라사이트] US is unhealthy, because 바카라사이트 PhD programmes are very good and attract 바카라사이트 best students from 바카라사이트 world,¡± he said.

¡°Yet 바카라사이트 concentration is alarming for equality. If a student is not from a wealthy family and 바카라사이트 public universities in her state [are not?among] 바카라사이트 top public universities, she has very small chance to become an elite academic.¡±? ?

The paper also finds that while 47 per cent of professors in public universities gained 바카라사이트ir PhD from a private university, just 30 per cent of professors at private universities got 바카라사이트ir PhD at a public institution.
