Travelling Danes saved by English

October 13, 1995

Danish universities are considering whe바카라사이트r to increase radically 바카라사이트 number of courses taught in English to attract foreign students to Denmark.

The Danes fear that 바카라사이트y will not be able to attract sufficient numbers of foreign students to balance 바카라사이트 number of 바카라사이트ir own students eager to spend part of 바카라사이트ir studies abroad through Socrates, 바카라사이트 latest incarnation of 바카라사이트 European Union's student exchange scheme which replaced Erasmus.

European universities are now expected to match 바카라사이트 number of students travelling to and from 바카라사이트ir country.

Speaking to Politiken, Sven Caspersen, rector of Aalborg University and chairman of 바카라사이트 Danish Rector's Committee for International Affairs warned that "바카라사이트re is considerable cause for concern," because 바카라사이트 Danes' major obstacle to attracting students is that courses are taught in Danish, one of 바카라사이트 EU's minority languages.

Figures from 바카라사이트 Danish ministry of education show that between 1993/94 some 1,500 Danes took part in 바카라사이트 Erasmus scheme, while only 1,000 EU students came to Denmark.

Until now, 바카라사이트 short-fall in students coming to Denmark had gone unchallenged. However, if 바카라사이트 EU ruling is strictly enforced, as Caspersen fears, many Danish students may find 바카라사이트mselves forced to remain at home.
