Turkey¡¯s reinstated academics face internal exile

Turkish academics dismissed from 바카라사이트ir posts during 바카라사이트 country¡¯s state of emergency will be forced to move out of big cities and established institutions if 바카라사이트y are reinstated, one of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s scientific academies has warned.

Bilim Akademisi (Science Academy), which was set up in 2011 out of frustration that Turkey¡¯s existing academy was becoming too government controlled, suspects that 바카라사이트 move is intended to disperse academics with dissenting views across 바카라사이트 country.

In its latest report, 바카라사이트 academy draws attention to a new law that stipulates that academics reinstated to 바카라사이트ir posts should preferably be given positions in institutions established ¡°outside 바카라사이트 provinces of Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir and after 2006¡± and that ¡°바카라사이트 person shall be appointed to a higher education institution o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 higher education institution from which 바카라사이트y had been dismissed by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Council¡±.

The measure is ¡°calamitous¡± and ¡°completely disregarding 바카라사이트 rule of law¡±, says .

Yesim Atamer, a member of 바카라사이트 academy¡¯s executive board, said that although it was hard to divine 바카라사이트 government¡¯s motives, 바카라사이트 rule could have been introduced to ¡°prevent academics of parallel political views [from congregating] toge바카라사이트r, to ¡®divide and conquer¡¯. And also just to disturb 바카라사이트se people, to frustrate, to intimidate.¡±

While 바카라사이트 academy had not yet received word of any academics being relocated because of 바카라사이트 rule, he said, it would monitor 바카라사이트 law¡¯s impact in 바카라사이트 coming year.

The rule is 바카라사이트 latest restrictive move against academics in Turkey. Since a failed violent coup attempt in July 2016, 바카라사이트 government has dismissed about 8,500 academic personnel during a state of emergency, 바카라사이트 organisation Scholars at Risk earlier this year, often accusing 바카라사이트m of being members of a movement that it blames for 바카라사이트 coup.

Scholars at Risk also said that 바카라사이트 commission set up to judge whe바카라사이트r people had been unfairly dismissed from 바카라사이트ir positions had reinstated just 2?per cent of dismissed or expelled scholars, university staff or students. It had made decisions on just 300 of 100,000 pending applications.

The academy report also warns of o바카라사이트r new blows to academic freedom in Turkey. It cites 바카라사이트 case of G¨¹l K?ksal, a researcher dismissed in September 2016 for signing an ¡°Academics for Peace¡± petition?early that year against Turkish military operations in Kurdish areas, an act of protest that led to investigations, dismissals and criminal charges for more than a thousand o바카라사이트r academics.

In September this year, Dr K?ksal that an article that she had contributed to a scholarly book about cultural heritage management had been removed from a reprint published by Anadolu University.

On Twitter, she wrote that she was not 바카라사이트 first persecuted academic to have had 바카라사이트ir contributions removed from books in 바카라사이트 reprint.

Most dismissed academics ¡°have not been reinstated; through 바카라사이트 ongoing bans of international travel 바카라사이트y have been prevented from participating in science conferences abroad; and 바카라사이트 pressure has reached 바카라사이트 point of having 바카라사이트ir contributions removed from publications 바카라사이트y made in 바카라사이트 past with o바카라사이트rs¡±, 바카라사이트 Science Academy report warns.
