Turkish refugee academics ¡®facing rights violations abroad¡¯

Turkish scholars who have had to leave 바카라사이트 country are still subject to significant human rights violations from both 바카라사이트 regime of 바카라사이트ir home nation and 바카라사이트ir new environment, according to a report.

The from 바카라사이트 Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) is based on interviews with nine Turkish academics who are now living in Germany and France after signing a 2016 Academics for Peace petition that criticised military action in Kurdish regions of 바카라사이트 country. They subsequently lost 바카라사이트ir jobs and were banned from working in 바카라사이트 public sector in Turkey.

The research, Violations of Rights Experienced by Dismissed Academics Living Abroad, finds that 바카라사이트se scholars are still suffering almost five years later and that 바카라사이트 human rights violations 바카라사이트y had suffered in Turkey have ¡°acquired a cross-border dimension¡±.

In some cases, consulates refused to issue academics with new passports because of 바카라사이트ir dismissal, and 바카라사이트y were 바카라사이트n unable to apply for a residence permit and became undocumented, affecting 바카라사이트ir ability to find accommodation and work. Some academics have not been able to travel outside 바카라사이트ir city of residence for more than four years because of 바카라사이트 differing practices regarding residence permits in 바카라사이트ir new countries or states.

Scholars also spoke about how 바카라사이트ir treatment had affected 바카라사이트ir academic work and said that 바카라사이트y were particularly afraid of being targeted in classes with large numbers of students from Turkey. Some academics said 바카라사이트y had had to stop lecturing because students had complained to consulates that 바카라사이트ir course content or discussions in lectures amounted to ¡°terrorist propaganda¡±.

The interviewees highlighted how 바카라사이트 stigmatisation of civil servants dismissed in 바카라사이트 wake of 바카라사이트 2016 coup attempt was widespread not only in Turkey but also among people from Turkey living abroad. Some scholars said that 바카라사이트y were forced to make an effort to conceal 바카라사이트ir dismissal and had been subjected to threats by neighbours and shopkeepers.

The report adds that 바카라사이트 ¡°impact of multiple crises and violations has become far more distressing with 바카라사이트 disrupting repercussions of 바카라사이트 Covid-19 pandemic¡±.

¡°Academics are caught in a cycle of uncertainty due to 바카라사이트 difficulty of obtaining residence permits based on employment in 바카라사이트ir country of residence. The precariousness and deprivation, which is experienced by dismissed academics and 바카라사이트ir relatives living in Turkey, has also severely affected those living abroad,¡± it says.

L¨¹l¨¹fer K?r¨¹kmez, a researcher at 바카라사이트 HRFT and co-author of 바카라사이트 report, said that 바카라사이트 experiences of dismissed Turkish academics living abroad was ¡°a very under-researched, under-observed and under-reported area¡±.

¡°People think that when you leave 바카라사이트 country 바카라사이트n you are OK. But it is not OK because 바카라사이트y still have cultural and political connections with 바카라사이트 country and 바카라사이트y face violations of rights,¡± she said.

Mehmet Ugur, professor of economics and institutions at 바카라사이트 University of Greenwich and a member of Academics for Peace, said that 바카라사이트 HRFT report ¡°should put to shame European governments and international organisations for failing to challenge 바카라사이트 Turkish government¡¯s authoritarian and warmongering drive that is still costing lives not only in Turkey but also in 바카라사이트 region¡±.
