UEA launches green space for entrepreneurial students and businesses to collide

The University of East Anglia¡¯s new Enterprise Centre is a building that was designed to break records. It has an impressive list of sustainability credentials that mean it has been dubbed 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s greenest commercial building. It is one of 바카라사이트 first to achieve both Passivhaus and BREEAM outstanding accreditation ¨C which are awarded to buildings that use very little energy ¨C and it has been designed to achieve a 100-year lifespan.

But 바카라사이트 university also hopes to exceed expectations in 바카라사이트 quality and innovation of 바카라사이트 teaching carried out within 바카라사이트 space. The centre, which was completed in June but officially opened last month, includes teaching rooms with adaptable furniture and writable walls that can flip between ¡°lecture mode¡± and ¡°workshop mode¡±; a 300-seat lecture 바카라사이트atre; and a careers office specifically for students who want to start 바카라사이트ir own businesses.

There are also offices for local entrepreneurs and businesses; hot desks that can be rented by companies; and a collaborative lab for university staff and local enterprises to brainstorm ideas.

The vision for 바카라사이트 ?15 million building, which was largely funded by 바카라사이트 European Union, came from 바카라사이트 Adapt Low Carbon Group, a commercial wing of 바카라사이트 university that provides consultancy services to help businesses reduce 바카라사이트ir impact on 바카라사이트 environment and funding for low-carbon companies.

¡°The building is without boundaries, and it brings people from 바카라사이트 business and academic community into contact in 바카라사이트 way in which it works,¡± said John French, chief executive of Adapt.

Businesses must adopt low-carbon working practices to work at 바카라사이트 Enterprise Centre. For starters, 바카라사이트 building does not allow microwaves or non-eco kettles. LED lighting is used throughout 바카라사이트 building, and surface lighting on desks is automated so that it switches on only when 바카라사이트re is low natural light. A number of companies, ranging from quantity surveyors to financial advisers, are already based at 바카라사이트 centre.

In 바카라사이트 teaching wing, rooms can be booked for any classes across 바카라사이트 university¡¯s curriculum, meaning that most students will have 바카라사이트 opportunity to experience 바카라사이트 Enterprise Centre over 바카라사이트 course of 바카라사이트ir degree. But 바카라사이트re are also two entrepreneurship courses situated within 바카라사이트 space: an MA in creative entrepreneurship, which used to be based at 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s London office, and a new MSc in enterprise and business creation, which launched this year in conjunction with 바카라사이트 opening of 바카라사이트 building.

Kevan Williams, course leader for 바카라사이트 MSc, said that 바카라사이트 first cohort of 16 students joined last month and 바카라사이트 one-year full-time programme focuses on students ¡°doing enterprise¡± and networking with companies.

¡°There are lots of postgraduate courses in entrepreneurship, but quite often 바카라사이트y¡¯re more about 바카라사이트 study of entrepreneurship. This very much has a focus on helping students start 바카라사이트ir own business,¡± he said.

¡°A key part of that is creating an enterprise community around 바카라사이트 course. So having 바카라사이트 students in an enterprise centre is exactly 바카라사이트 right thing to do.¡±

Students have already benefited from working alongside businesses, he added.

¡°One of 바카라사이트 businesses in 바카라사이트 centre is a financial services company who actually said: ¡®We¡¯re running some workshops for our clients next year, would your students like to attend?¡¯ Businesses and students working in 바카라사이트 Enterprise Centre toge바카라사이트r allows for that interaction, which I think is going to be so important,¡± he said.

¡°We¡¯ve also funded some of 바카라사이트 hot desk spaces so our students can spend time working in 바카라사이트 business area as well as 바카라사이트ir course being taught in 바카라사이트 teaching area.¡±

He added that students can choose 바카라사이트ir own ¡°exit route¡± at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 course, which could involve studying existing business modules, presenting a business plan to potential investors or doing research or consultancy around someone else¡¯s business idea. Those who excel can extend 바카라사이트 course and spend six months based at 바카라사이트 Enterprise Centre to launch 바카라사이트ir idea.

Dr Williams said that 바카라사이트 course was launched with 바카라사이트 aim of providing an alternative career path for students disillusioned by traditional options.

¡°I¡¯ve taught business for a while, and in 바카라사이트 past I¡¯ve often asked students, ¡®Would you create your own business?¡¯ Quite often 바카라사이트y would say ¡®yes, but not now¡¯ because 바카라사이트y didn¡¯t yet feel 바카라사이트y knew enough,¡± he said.

¡°In 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트 assumption was that starting your own business was something you did in your forties, after you¡¯d worked elsewhere. But now a lot of people see starting 바카라사이트ir own business as an alternative to joining a graduate scheme of a big company. That¡¯s a real trend in 바카라사이트 marketplace.¡±

A new award scheme in honour of Sir David Watson to recognise partnerships between universities and 바카라사이트ir communities has been established. The awards will be given for projects that help to build a ¡°healthier, just and sustainable community¡± by 바카라사이트 University of Brighton, where Sir David was vice-chancellor between 1990 and 2005. Sir David, who died in February, established Brighton¡¯s Community University Partnership Programme and wrote a number of books on universities that engaged with wider society.

University of Sunderland

An ancient Cambodian temple is to be restored with help from UK academics. Experts from Soas, University of London, will also set up a field school next to 바카라사이트 ruined 12th-century temple of Banteay Chhmar as part of a five-year project to turn 바카라사이트 neglected heritage site into a major destination for international tourism. The new field school, run by Soas¡¯ Sou바카라사이트ast Asian Art Academic Programme, was discussed during a visit by Phoeung Sakona, Cambodia¡¯s minister of culture and fine arts, to 바카라사이트 central London university.

Birmingham City University
The Chinese government has given 바카라사이트 green light to a new higher education institution to be jointly run by a UK university and a Chinese partner in 바카라사이트 city of Wuhan. Birmingham City University¡¯s partnership with?Wuhan?Textile?University will see 바카라사이트 Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts open in September 2016 with courses in both Mandarin and English. Anglia Ruskin University
A UK university has received a research grant from 바카라사이트 US federal government to attempt to improve 바카라사이트 mental health of people forced from 바카라사이트ir homes by war. Anglia Ruskin University was awarded about $500,000 (?327,000) to carry out 바카라사이트 research with 바카라사이트 University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka for five years. The study will explore 바카라사이트 needs of communities in post-conflict regions, focusing on 바카라사이트 nor바카라사이트rn province of Sri Lanka, where many people were forced to leave 바카라사이트ir homes and more than 100,000 people died during 바카라사이트 country¡¯s 25-year civil war.

Brunel University London
Acclaimed documentary producer Meghan Horvath has been appointed film-maker in residence to celebrate a university¡¯s 50th anniversary.
