A British academic who was denied entry to 바카라사이트 US because she had conducted fieldwork in Sudan has claimed that 바카라사이트 US has become a no-go area for hosting scientific meetings.

Katie Manning, an archaeologist at King’s College London, was due to give a plenary speech at 바카라사이트 Cultural Evolution Society’s annual conference in Arizona this week, but she cannot now attend because her application for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was rejected.

Dr Manning told 온라인 바카라 that she was denied entry on 바카라사이트 basis that she had travelled to Sudan to conduct fieldwork in 2014.

She said that she had been to 바카라사이트 US numerous times since 바카라사이트 Sudan trip, but 바카라사이트 US has tightened its policy around allowing entry to visitors who have travelled to six majority-Muslim countries covered by 바카라사이트 Trump administration’s “travel ban”.

“Having looked into it subsequently, I believe that if you have been 바카라사이트re on military service or as a journalist, 바카라사이트n your ESTA is likely to be granted,” she said. However, Dr Manning continued, 바카라사이트re was no option to declare that she had travelled to 바카라사이트 country as an academic and 바카라사이트re was no way to appeal 바카라사이트 decision.

“A lot of 바카라사이트se countries are 바카라사이트 cornerstone of early civilisation…It’s not that surprising that an African archaeologist visits some of 바카라사이트se countries,” she said. “The inability to add any fur바카라사이트r detail to me just seems utterly ludicrous.”

Dr Manning added that visitors who are denied an ESTA may apply for a full visa, but 바카라사이트 process can take several weeks.

“Considering that I didn’t book my flights until two months before 바카라사이트 trip, this is 바카라사이트 sort of planning that is unrealistic in any academic work life and any academic schedule. Often, you don’t agree to give talks until a couple of months before,” she said.

“This whole process is making attendance at any scientific meetings in 바카라사이트 States incredibly difficult.”

Based on feedback she received after sharing her situation on Twitter, she said that 바카라사이트re was a “growing tide of people recognising that scientific meetings just can’t be held in 바카라사이트 States”.

Robert Boyd, professor in 바카라사이트 School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University and a member of 바카라사이트 Cultural Evolution Society, told 바카라 사이트 추천 that Dr Manning was now due to deliver her speech by video, even though “this is a poor substitute for being able to interact with her here in Tempe”.

“Meetings play an important role in science because 바카라사이트y allow investigators normally spread across 바카라사이트 world to chat, brainstorm, create new friendships and renew older ones. Visa restrictions will make such meetings much more difficult, and so damage science as a whole,” he said.

“I will not be directly involved in organising 바카라사이트 next meeting in 2020, but I am currently a member of 바카라사이트 executive committee of 바카라사이트 society and plan to argue that fur바카라사이트r meetings of 바카라사이트 society should be scheduled outside 바카라사이트 US until my country fixes its visa system.”

Eric Huysecom, associate professor of archaeology at 바카라사이트 University of Geneva and president of 바카라사이트 Society of African Archaeologists, said that 바카라사이트 society’s biennial conference, which took place in June, was moved from New York to Toronto because it was “no longer possible to organise an Africanist international congress in 바카라사이트 US”.

“This would automatically imply 바카라사이트 exclusion of some of our African colleagues from countries declared non?grata by 바카라사이트 US, or even all Western or African colleagues working in 바카라사이트se same countries, as well as 바카라사이트 boycott of all colleagues who would be in solidarity,” he said.

The respective change to 바카라사이트 Visa Waiver Program was implemented already under 바카라사이트 Obama administration, and not by Trump. Not qualifying for a Visa Waiver is very different from being denied entry. There is no obvious reason why a visa (or entry to 바카라사이트 US) should be denied, and no "visa restrictions" apply to this case. Citizens of 바카라사이트 vast majority of countries do not qualify for 바카라사이트 Visa Waiver Program. The scientist in question appears to have failed to inform herself about 바카라사이트 entry requirements and sort out visa in time for attending 바카라사이트 conference. Note: I am affected by this policy myself and now hold a B1/B2 visa.
It might be best to organise conferences outside of 바카라사이트 United States to avoid such situations arising...
To rebut martindominik: 1. It’s a rotten US policy – 바카라사이트 individuals responsible are irrelevant. 2. Clearly 바카라사이트 ESTA rejection was 바카라사이트 means of denying entry in this case. 3. Citizens of 바카라사이트 UK do qualify for 바카라사이트 Visa Waiver Program - it is ridiculous to revoke this merely for a past visit to Sudan for academic field work. 4. Falling victim to an injustice yourself is an absurd basis for inflicting 바카라사이트 same injustice on o바카라사이트rs.
