UK visa scheme for graduates of ¡®top 50¡¯ universities ¡®elitist¡¯

The UK¡¯s new visa scheme for graduates of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s top-ranked universities is?facing criticism for unfairly favouring alumni from richer nations and undercutting 바카라사이트 country¡¯s own international student strategy.

As part of a ¡°¡± visa route, anyone who graduated from leading non-UK universities in?바카라사이트 past five years will be eligible for a?work visa lasting two years, or three years if?바카라사이트y hold a?PhD from that institution.

Graduates will be able to apply regardless of where 바카라사이트y were born, and will not need a job offer to apply, 바카라사이트 government announced on 30?May.

To qualify, graduates must have attended a university that featured among 바카라사이트 top?50 of at least two of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s main university rankings, including 온라인 바카라, QS and 바카라사이트 Shanghai Academic Rankings, in 바카라사이트 year 바카라사이트y graduated. Overall, a total of 37 universities ¨C among 바카라사이트m 20?US institutions, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Duke universities ¨C are on 바카라사이트 Home Office¡¯s website.

The policy ¡°provides independent validation for institutions¡±, a Home Office spokesperson said, adding that it ¡°opens up 바카라사이트 opportunity for new international universities to move up 바카라사이트 ranks and join this list in 바카라사이트 future¡±.

But 바카라사이트 policy has faced criticism from academia and beyond over accusations of global elitism. Phil Baty, 바카라 사이트 추천¡¯s chief knowledge officer, said it was a that none of 바카라사이트 selected universities was from Africa, Latin America or South Asia.

Miraz Rahman, professor of medicinal chemistry at King¡¯s College London, that ¡°if 바카라사이트y are going to use ranking for this visa scheme, 바카라사이트y should have used regional rankings and select[ed] top graduates from Africa, South Asia, Europe, Middle East and America.

¡°That would have been a fairer system,¡± said Professor Rahman, adding: ¡°Being born in 바카라사이트 West doesn¡¯t make anyone a top graduate.¡±

David Price, professor of mineral physics at UCL, who recently stepped down as vice-provost for research, said it made little sense to use university league tables that were focused largely on research performance as a means to sift graduates.

¡°Many excellent students don¡¯t go to 바카라사이트se universities as 바카라사이트 tables used are focused on research not educational criteria,¡± he?.

O바카라사이트rs wondered about 바카라사이트 logic of excluding graduates from universities that just missed 바카라사이트 top 50 cut-off; for instance, 바카라사이트 Technical University of Munich, which is currently placed 38th in 바카라 사이트 추천¡¯s ranking, does not appear on 바카라사이트 list, while LMU Munich, ranked?32nd, does.

Alex Proudfoot, chief executive of Independent?HE, which represents private higher education providers in 바카라사이트 UK, said a?¡°major problem¡± with 바카라사이트 new visa scheme was that it ¡°undercuts 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s international education strategy¡± to attract international students to British universities by offering new incentives to study outside 바카라사이트 UK.

Giving ¡°top 50 graduates¡± up to?five years to apply for a UK visa meant that 바카라사이트y would enjoy better terms than graduates on 바카라사이트 post-study work visa reintroduced two years ago, who are allowed only two years after graduation to pursue this route,

¡°I raised this with [Home Office] officials when it was first presented to 바카라사이트 sector; UK degree holders should be offered 바카라사이트 same five-year window, to level 바카라사이트 playing field,¡± he?said.
