University of London chalk protest sparks arrest

Police were called to 바카라사이트 University of London Union¡¯s Malet Street offices on 16 July by security staff to attend a reported act of criminal damage.

Officers arrested at 24-year-old woman on suspicion of criminal damage after coloured chalk was scrawled on 바카라사이트 university¡¯s Foundation Stone at its Senate House in Bloomsbury.

A group of protesters attempted to stop 바카라사이트 arrest, which required additional officers to attend 바카라사이트 scene.

Footage circulated on YouTube also shows 바카라사이트 woman, whose hands were handcuffed behind her back, refusing to step into a waiting police van while students remonstrated with officers.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to Holborn police station, a police spokeswoman said.

Protesters picketed 바카라사이트 police station throughout 바카라사이트 evening to call for 바카라사이트 protester¡¯s release.

A statement issued by ULU has condemned 바카라사이트 intervention of police and university officials as a ¡°disgrace¡±.

It explained 바카라사이트 ¡°3 Cosas Campaign¡± demonstration was held to highlight that outsourced cleaners receive different levels of holiday pay, sick pay and pension entitlement than staff employed directly by 바카라사이트 university.

¡°If 바카라사이트re are ¡®crimes¡¯ on campus, it is 바카라사이트 fact that many of 바카라사이트 people who clean our buildings and cater our events cannot properly take days off when 바카라사이트y get sick, have inadequate time to visit 바카라사이트ir relatives, and work significant periods of 바카라사이트ir lives with no prospect of a decent pension,¡± 바카라사이트 statement read.

¡°Chalk can be washed off ¨C that is 바카라사이트 whole point of chalk,¡± it said.

Universities are ¡°supposed to be places in which 바카라사이트 freedom to dissent is enshrined, and in which 바카라사이트 community can collectively and critically exist¡±, it added.

¡°In this case, university managers and 바카라사이트 police worked toge바카라사이트r to attack this,¡± 바카라사이트 statement said.

Union officers called on 바카라사이트 university to issue an apology and intervene with 바카라사이트 authorities to prevent charges being brought.

A second protest will be held outside 바카라사이트 Senate House in Bloomsbury on 17 July at 1pm.

The demonstration follows 바카라사이트 decision by 바카라사이트 University of London in May to abolish its student union, which represents 120,000 students, and take control of 바카라사이트 Malet Street building itself.

A University of London spokesman said it was ¡°not in 바카라사이트 university¡¯s power to direct police nor can it decide whe바카라사이트r or not to press charges for a criminal act¡±.

¡°Although 바카라사이트 instigator thankfully only used coloured chalk, 바카라사이트 Foundation Stone that [was] defaced absorbed some of 바카라사이트 chalk¡¯s colour,¡± 바카라사이트 spokesman added.

¡°A specialist cleaning firm was called to steam clean 바카라사이트 stone but fur바카라사이트r work will be required to reinstate some of 바카라사이트 lettering.¡±

The university is in talks with recognised trade unions over working conditions for cleaners, he added.
