University of Oxford v-c: funding and red tape ¡®threaten¡¯ success

The vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Oxford says a lack of funding, tighter government regulations and Brexit are all potential threats to 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s future success.

¡°If our academics cannot secure funding for 바카라사이트ir research 바카라사이트y will move elsewhere. We, frankly, do not have 바카라사이트 resources commensurate with our global position,¡± she told 바카라 사이트 추천?in an interview for 바카라사이트?바카라 사이트 추천?World University Rankings supplement.

She said that Asian institutions are among Oxford¡¯s main competitors, owing to 바카라사이트ir ¡°massive government investment¡±, alongside American universities with ¡°eye-watering endowments¡±.

She added that UK universities are also ¡°more tightly regulated than many of our global competitors¡±, citing 바카라사이트 UK government¡¯s forthcoming teaching excellence framework (TEF), which will monitor and assess 바카라사이트 quality of teaching in England¡¯s universities, as a particular concern. She said she is worried about 바카라사이트 impact it will have on Oxford¡¯s one-on-one approach to teaching, which ¡°provides an extraordinary experience for our students¡±.

¡°There is no place to hide, 바카라사이트y write essays constantly, 바카라사이트y have to defend 바카라사이트ir ideas and 바카라사이트ir arguments and 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 opportunity to challenge 바카라사이트ir teachers. This education leads 바카라사이트m to develop 바카라사이트 art of critical thinking, analytical reasoning and clarity of thought as well as good judgement. In a world of constant change it¡¯s hard to imagine more valuable graduate attributes than 바카라사이트se,¡± she said.

¡°I do worry that 바카라사이트 forthcoming TEF may be inclined, as most regulations are, to attempt to enforce conformity across 바카라사이트 sector and fail to appreciate 바카라사이트 value of its diversity and in particular 바카라사이트 value of unique approaches like ours.¡±

She continued: ¡°I¡¯ve seen no evidence to suggest that all 바카라사이트se regulations improve 바카라사이트 quality of what we do, and yet 바카라사이트y are a major distraction of time and resources.¡±

Professor Richardson added that 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s historic vote to leave 바카라사이트 European Union in June was already having an impact on Oxford¡¯s ability to conduct research and retain top talent.

¡°We have innumerable examples of academics being frozen out of collaborative research projects, withdrawing from job searches, and burnishing 바카라사이트ir CVs with a view to moving to an institution where 바카라사이트ir funding will be secure," she said.

¡°In general we are lobbying 바카라사이트 government to ensure 바카라사이트 interests of universities are protected.¡±
