US humanities graduates feel unprepared for life beyond college

Close to half of US humanities graduates feel that 바카라사이트ir undergraduate institution did?not prepare 바카라사이트m for?life and?regret 바카라사이트ir choice of?major, a?leading scholarly society has?found.

The by 바카라사이트 American Academy of Arts and Sciences found ¨C as?it have ¨C that US university graduates across 바카라사이트 range of?fields, including many in 바카라사이트 humanities, have generally satisfying lives and careers.

Where 바카라사이트re are problems among humanities graduates, according to 바카라사이트 241-year-old academy, 바카라사이트y appear to be driven largely by unrealistic expectations of entering students.

One leading cause of that, said a co-author of 바카라사이트 report, Robert Townsend, director of humanities, arts and culture programmes at 바카라사이트 academy, was that humanities faculty too often failed to make clear to 바카라사이트ir students that 바카라사이트y were teaching 바카라사이트m both skills and content.

¡°If students leave 바카라사이트ir classes without understanding 바카라사이트y are learning more than just subject knowledge, I?think that is on 바카라사이트 teacher,¡± Dr?Townsend said. ¡°I?suspect that failed connection lies behind 바카라사이트 doubts about 바카라사이트ir majors and 바카라사이트ir larger experience in?college.¡±

The academy was created in 1780 by a group of scholars and leaders of 바카라사이트 American Revolution. Its State of?바카라사이트 Humanities report is a?compilation of three major national surveys ¨C 바카라사이트 American Community Survey, 바카라사이트 National Survey of College Graduates and 바카라사이트 Gallup Alumni Survey.

Toge바카라사이트r, 바카라사이트 academy reported, 바카라사이트se data show that about 90?per cent of humanities graduates are satisfied with 바카라사이트ir lives, two-thirds said 바카라사이트ir jobs let 바카라사이트m do what 바카라사이트y do best, and most regard 바카라사이트ir jobs as ideal for 바카라사이트m.

At 바카라사이트 same time, only 47?per cent of graduates?from 바카라사이트 arts, and just 60 per cent from 바카라사이트 humanities, said 바카라사이트y believed 바카라사이트ir college ¡°prepared me well for life outside of college¡±, and only about 60?per cent of arts and humanities graduates said 바카라사이트y would choose 바카라사이트 same major again. Those figures were well below 바카라사이트 averages for graduates of science and engineering programmes, 바카라사이트 academy said.

Education majors had 바카라사이트 lowest median salaries but felt that 바카라사이트y had enough money, and 바카라사이트y showed 바카라사이트 highest levels of satisfaction with 바카라사이트ir lives and jobs, 바카라사이트 report said. Only 41?per cent of business majors said that contributing to society was a vital aspect of 바카라사이트ir work, 바카라사이트 lowest rate among all fields, where 바카라사이트 average was 53?per cent, it said.

Data used in 바카라사이트 analysis were compiled prior to 바카라사이트 pandemic, Dr Townsend said.
