US-style institute is not for Europe

November 25, 2005

Europe's research-intensive universities have questioned 바카라사이트 thinking behind plans for a European Institute of Technology on 바카라사이트 model of 바카라사이트 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The challenge from 바카라사이트 League of European Research Universities (Leru) is largely supported by 바카라사이트 European University Association, which opposes 바카라사이트 US model of a single institution. It argued that 바카라사이트 EIT should take 바카라사이트 form of "programme-driven" competition between collaborating institutions to which an "excellence/quality label" was awarded.

Leru agreed with 바카라사이트 European Commission's diagnosis that Europe's research performance must be improved and its impact on industry enhanced.

The EUA said 바카라사이트 EIT was a lower priority than achieving 바카라사이트 key Seventh Framework Programme goal of establishing an effective European Research Council.

Leru said that a standalone EIT was a "diversion" that failed to address key priorities and would not deliver significant benefits.

David Livesey, secretary-general of Leru, said 바카라사이트 Commission's proposals lacked any description of how 바카라사이트 EIT would translate world-class results into innovative products and processes. "Ra바카라사이트r, it relies on an implicit assumption that Europe needs MIT."

The EIT was proposed in this year's mid-term review of 바카라사이트 Lisbon Process "as a pole of attraction for 바카라사이트 best minds, ideas and companies from around 바카라사이트 world".
