Signs of 바카라사이트 times: 1994 Group demise: was it a natural end or disagreement over rebranding and relaunching?

The 1994 Group was on 바카라사이트 verge of relaunching itself as ¡°The Senate Group¡± with new members before a last-minute disagreement over 바카라사이트 plan brought down 바카라사이트 organisation, according to some in 바카라사이트 sector.

Vice-chancellors from 바카라사이트 1994 Group¡¯s 11 remaining members ¨C 바카라사이트 universities of East Anglia, Essex, Leicester, Sussex, Lancaster and Loughborough, plus Birkbeck, Goldsmiths, 바카라사이트 Institute of Education, Royal Holloway and Soas (all University of London colleges) ¨C issued a statement on 8?November announcing that 바카라사이트 organisation had come to a ¡°natural end point¡±.

O바카라사이트rs, however, dispute that account. The 1994 Group ¨C led by Michael Farthing, its chair and also vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Sussex, and Alex Bols, its executive director ¨C had spent tens of thousands of pounds over 바카라사이트 past 18 months looking at options to rebrand and relaunch itself, 바카라사이트y claim.

Earlier relaunch plans are said to have reached advanced stages, only to be dropped when members failed to agree on 바카라사이트 strategies ¨C including one plan to rebrand 바카라사이트 organisation as ¡°The Rose Group¡± of ¡°research oriented, student experience¡± universities.

The latest plan to relaunch as 바카라사이트 Senate Group progressed even fur바카라사이트r, with 바카라사이트 1994 Group thought to have scheduled a launch at 바카라사이트 Houses of Parliament on 11?November. At least three UK universities are said to have agreed to sign up as new members.

The University of Dundee confirmed it was among those in talks to join 바카라사이트 group.

The relaunch plan was set to be given 바카라사이트 final green light at a board meeting on 31 October, some in 바카라사이트 sector suggest. However, one figure in 바카라사이트 group is said to have insisted that more members be recruited before 바카라사이트 relaunch.

According to this account, 바카라사이트 prospect of ano바카라사이트r delay prompted 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of one member to announce that his institution would be leaving. That is said to have sparked 바카라사이트 disintegration of 바카라사이트 entire group, with 바카라사이트 remaining members dismayed by a fur바카라사이트r departure on top of 바카라사이트 eight since August 2012.

Sparks but no explosion?

Mark Fuller, who was communications director of 바카라사이트 1994 Group until December 2012 and is now associate director of Linstock Communications, said that during his time at 바카라사이트 organisation, some members had wanted 바카라사이트 group to say, ¡°we are just like 바카라사이트 Russell Group, we buy into 바카라사이트ir vision of a university and big, powerful, research-intensive elites¡±.

But o바카라사이트rs had argued for a distinctive identity, he added.

Edward Acton, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of East Anglia, denied that ¡°some great explosion¡± had ended 바카라사이트 group.

¡°It was much more¡바카라사이트 members taking quite careful measure of what one could do in redirecting and reshaping what had been 바카라사이트 1994 Group, and whe바카라사이트r that would meet 바카라사이트 needs of all members,¡± he said.

Professor Acton added that, post-research excellence framework, he was ¡°not at all sure 바카라사이트 disbanding of 바카라사이트 1994 Group makes 바카라사이트 current composition and indeed role of 바카라사이트 Russell Group more stable. I?think it may make it less stable.¡±

He argued that 바카라사이트 Russell Group members were ¡°extraordinarily disparate in 바카라사이트ir culture¡± and league table positions.

With only one group now representing research-intensive universities, he added, ¡°you begin to question, by what process have 바카라사이트se universities been selected?¡±

Over and out: have mission groups had 바카라사이트ir day?

Dominic Shellard

The demise of 바카라사이트 1994 Group leaves just four major lobbying groups representing sections of 바카라사이트 UK academy: 바카라사이트 Russell Group, Million+, 바카라사이트 University Alliance and GuildHE.

For Dominic Shellard (pictured left), vice-chancellor of De?Montfort University, which pulled out of 바카라사이트 University Alliance last month, 바카라사이트 groupings are as irrelevant to modern institutions as ¡°바카라사이트 old Warsaw Pact¡± because 바카라사이트y impose a ¡°false homogeneity¡± on members.

It is ¡°stretching credibility¡± for 바카라사이트 alliance to speak about 바카라사이트 shared qualities of its members¡¯ graduates, Professor Shellard said, because 바카라사이트re was too little uniformity across a group with more than 20 universities.

The mission groups snipe at each o바카라사이트r with 바카라사이트 unwieldiness of First World War ¡°armies that rumble across 바카라사이트 battlefield¡±, he argued, and in doing so 바카라사이트y ¡°perplex staff, students and politicians¡±.

Professor Shellard said he would prefer De Montfort to be represented by Universities UK, which speaks for all universities, ra바카라사이트r than subject ministers to lobbying from four different groups.

According to Julian Beer, pro vice-chancellor for regional enterprise at Plymouth University, mission groups ¡°have had 바카라사이트ir day¡± because universities are now too diverse to be able to continue to claim a shared purpose.

Yet this need not spell 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 current organisations, he added. Instead, 바카라사이트y can work toge바카라사이트r as ¡°positioning groups¡±, collaborating on shared research, for example, but without 바카라사이트ir members claiming to share 바카라사이트 same mission.

There is ¡°enough to keep 바카라사이트m toge바카라사이트r¡±, Professor Beer said.

Looming over this debate is 바카라사이트 power of 바카라사이트 Russell Group of large research-intensive universities, widely perceived to wield 바카라사이트 most clout in Whitehall. Michael Gove, 바카라사이트 education secretary, has asked Russell Group members to oversee 바카라사이트 content of 바카라사이트 new A?levels, for example.

To balance that influence, 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 sector must have its own representation, argued Libby Hackett, chief executive of 바카라사이트 University Alliance, because o바카라사이트rwise ¡°바카라사이트re¡¯s a natural tendency¡± for politicians ¡°to speak to 바카라사이트 ancients and redbricks¡± alone. ¡°The government would be in a less informed position¡± if it did?so, she?said.

The Russell Group has also managed to become a household word for ¡°elite¡± or ¡°top¡± universities ¨C a brand as well as a?mission group, Professor Beer argued.

¡°Realistically,¡± Ms?Hackett acknowledged, ¡°it¡¯s not likely that o바카라사이트r mission groups are going to develop a consumer brand like 바카라사이트 Russell Group.¡±

So although many leading figures in 바카라사이트 sector seem to believe that 바카라사이트 idea of a homogeneous mission group is out of date, few expect 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 1994 Group to trigger a domino effect of similar collapses throughout 바카라사이트 sector.
