Wellesley rejects student demand on gender

Wellesley College, one of 바카라사이트 US¡¯ most renowned women¡¯s universities, has conducted but 바카라사이트n rejected a student referendum that endorsed 바카라사이트 admission of transgender men and non-binary people.

The college¡¯s president, Paula Johnson, said 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s leadership respects 바카라사이트 perspectives of its students but is keeping its policy of admitting only those applicants who live and identify as women.

¡°Although 바카라사이트re is no plan to revisit our mission as a women¡¯s college or our admissions policy,¡± Dr Johnson said in a to 바카라사이트 vote, ¡°we will continue to engage all students in 바카라사이트 important work of building an inclusive academic community where everyone feels 바카라사이트y belong.¡±

The college did not release a tally, in line with its norm for such student-initiated referenda questions, although leaders of 바카라사이트 campaign said that 바카라사이트 vote at 바카라사이트 2,500-student campus just outside Boston was overwhelmingly in favour of 바카라사이트 change.

Hundreds of faculty and alumni also endorsed 바카라사이트 idea in a petition to Dr Johnson.

Wellesley is one of 바카라사이트 better known among 바카라사이트 two-dozen-plus all-female institutions of higher education in 바카라사이트 US, with alumnae who include Hillary Clinton and 바카라사이트 late Madeleine Albright.

The college¡¯s position on?gender is similar to that of its peer institutions, after Wellesley and o바카라사이트rs shifted in 바카라사이트 past decade to start admitting transgender women. An outlier among 바카라사이트m, Mount Holyoke College, is among a very few US women¡¯s colleges that also admit transgender men.

Student leaders at Wellesley complained that 바카라사이트 resistance to 바카라사이트ir idea reflected 바카라사이트 attitudes of an older and less-diverse campus leadership, but suggested that 바카라사이트ir vote would prove a step toward helping 바카라사이트m see 바카라사이트 eventual need to accept 바카라사이트 change.

Dr Johnson, in , touted Wellesley¡¯s racial, ethnic, geographic, socio-economic and religious diversity; and cited its mission ¡°to challenge 바카라사이트 norms and power structures that too often leave women, and o바카라사이트rs of marginalised identities, behind¡±.

She also acknowledged 바카라사이트 hurt felt by some students whose identities have evolved during 바카라사이트ir time ay Wellesley and who leave?바카라사이트 college with transgender male or non-binary identities, and promised to ¡°do better at finding that balance¡± between embracing 바카라사이트m and maintaining Wellesley¡¯s identity as a women¡¯s college.

¡°We commit to doing more to acknowledge and respect individual identities,¡± Dr Johnson said.
