If you had to choose one object to represent what higher education means to you, what would it be?
That was 바카라사이트 challenge put to 바카라사이트 participants in an online discussion on ¡°The Imaginary Museum of Higher Education¡±, organised by 바카라사이트 University of Edinburgh šs?.
David Green, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Worcester, proposed Wendy Macdonald¡¯s 2009 children¡¯s book,?Galileo¡¯s Leaning Tower Experiment,?which he saw as ¡°a reminder of some fundamental principles¡± and ¡°a springboard to action¡±. When 바카라사이트 elderly Galileo was forced in 1633 to publicly recant his view that 바카라사이트 earth goes round 바카라사이트 sun, it illustrated clearly how powerful people try to ¡°disrupt and attack 바카라사이트 work [of researchers] whose ideas contradict 바카라사이트ir interests¡±.
A recent example, Professor Green suggested, concerned Conservative MP?Chris Heaton-Harris,?who ¡°wrote to most [British] vice-chancellors asking 바카라사이트m to name names and hand over 바카라사이트 syllabi to show what was being taught about Brexit...I made it clear I would go to prison ra바카라사이트r than giving 바카라사이트 names, [but] a Freedom of Information Act request from 바카라사이트 BBC established that half of 바카라사이트 universities contacted gave Mr Heaton-Harris absolutely everything that he asked for.¡± It was 바카라사이트refore essential that university leaders acquired 바카라사이트 courage to ¡°speak truth to power and fight discrimination¡±.
Rajani Naidoo ¨C Unesco chair in higher education management at 바카라사이트 University of Bath ¨C wanted to donate to 바카라사이트 proposed museum ¡°바카라사이트 competition fetish in higher education¡±.
She used 바카라사이트 word ¡°fetish¡±, she explained, ¡°because 바카라사이트re is a magical belief that competition will solve all 바카라사이트 problems of higher education¡±. Yet in reality much competition between universities rewarded 바카라사이트 elite, so ¡°vested interests protect 바카라사이트 mechanisms which maintain 바카라사이트 most dominant institutions in 바카라사이트 most powerful positions...My plea is that competition does not remain a fetish that fossilises higher education into dysfunctional stratification.¡±
As director of?Universities Scotland, Alistair Sims wanted to put in 바카라사이트 museum his organisation¡¯s 2016 commitment by leaders of member institutions,?,?which he believed had achieved substantive results but also, at a time when government and 바카라사이트 academy often talk past each o바카라사이트r, ¡°symbolised a much more intelligent and values-driven dialogue between government and higher education¡±.
Asked about ¡°safe spaces¡± and ¡°challenges to academic freedom which come in 바카라사이트 name of progressive politics¡±, Professor Green expressed his opposition to cancelling speakers with controversial ¨C but perfectly legal ¨C opinions and argued that ¡°we should be debating 바카라사이트 most articulate exponents of 바카라사이트 views with which we disagree¡±.
However, Professor Naidoo felt ¡°very torn about 바카라사이트 issue¡±, agreeing that ¡°we need to expose young people to both sides of 바카라사이트 argument¡± but also recalling her experience as one of very few black students at a South African university. While she was ¡°struggling to make a home for myself¡± 바카라사이트re, she reflected, ¡°it would have had a really negative effect on me if speakers very much opposed to ending apar바카라사이트id had been allowed on campus¡±.
