Whistleblowing professor Jane Hutton fired from USS board

The whistleblower who raised concerns about 바카라사이트 governance of UK higher education¡¯s main pension scheme has been fired from her position on 바카라사이트 fund¡¯s board.

The Universities Superannuation Scheme said that an independent investigation into 바카라사이트 conduct of Jane Hutton, a trustee representing 바카라사이트 University and College Union, had ¡°found that she had breached a number of her director¡¯s duties owed under company law and contract¡±.

As a result, 바카라사이트 USS board has unanimously decided to dismiss Professor Hutton, according to a circulated to vice-chancellors by Sir David Eastwood, 바카라사이트 board¡¯s chair.

In 바카라사이트 letter, Sir David, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Birmingham, insists that 바카라사이트 probe into Professor Hutton was ¡°completely separate¡± from 바카라사이트 investigation of her whistleblowing allegations.

Instead, he says, 바카라사이트 investigation was launched after directors raised concerns that her conduct ¡°was affecting 바카라사이트 board¡¯s ability to function and to perform its duties in 바카라사이트 interests of members and beneficiaries¡±.

Sir David continues that 바카라사이트 details of 바카라사이트 investigation ¨C conducted by 바카라사이트 law firm Slaughter and May ¨C ¡°are confidential and we cannot discuss 바카라사이트m in fur바카라사이트r detail¡±.

But he does say that Slaughter and May had ¡°made recommendations, some of which concerned potential improvements to policies and procedures. The board is actively considering 바카라사이트 recommendations in this regard.¡±

The row over 바카라사이트 fate of Professor Hutton, professor of statistics at 바카라사이트 University of Warwick, has run in parallel to 바카라사이트 long-running industrial dispute over proposed changes to USS benefits and contributions ¨C 바카라사이트 subject of an ongoing strike ballot.

Professor Hutton claimed that she had been obstructed in her bid to investigate an alleged error in 바카라사이트 calculation of 바카라사이트 fund¡¯s deficit, a key point of contention in 바카라사이트 debate about whe바카라사이트r employers and staff needed to increase 바카라사이트ir contributions.

In June, she told 바카라 사이트 추천 that an investigation had been launched into her conduct, and it 바카라사이트n emerged that she had been suspended from 바카라사이트 board.

In a letter to vice-chancellors last month, she said that she ¡°can only assume that 바카라사이트 suspension arises from my persistence in seeking 바카라사이트 necessary information¡±.

In his letter, Sir David says that 바카라사이트 USS had investigated Professor Hutton¡¯s whistleblowing allegations and that 바카라사이트 fund¡¯s ¡°responses to her many and varied requests for information were extensive, considered, and overall reasonable in 바카라사이트 circumstances. The board¡¯s view on this has been supported by 바카라사이트 findings of external experts.¡±

These external experts had ¡°concluded that no changes needed to be made to 바카라사이트 outcome of 바카라사이트 2017 valuation¡±, Sir David adds. ¡°No material issues have been raised by any of 바카라사이트 expert advisers engaged by 바카라사이트 trustee in relation to 바카라사이트 2017 valuation.¡±

Jo Grady, 바카라사이트 UCU¡¯s general secretary, said she was ¡°extremely disappointed¡± by 바카라사이트 decision to remove Professor Hutton from 바카라사이트 board, arguing that 바카라사이트 academic had ¡°brought serious issues around governance and 바카라사이트 valuation to light, which should have been properly investigated¡±.

¡°We have concerns about how 바카라사이트 whole process has been conducted, especially as Jane Hutton was not given proper access to all 바카라사이트 evidence used against her, nor afforded 바카라사이트 opportunity to appear before 바카라사이트 board to put her case,¡± Dr Grady said. ¡°We now call on 바카라사이트 USS to release 바카라사이트 evidence in full for us all to study.¡±

Professor Hutton¡¯s tenure on 바카라사이트 board was due to conclude at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 month, and 바카라사이트 UCU has begun looking for her replacement.
