Women ¡®systematically excluded¡¯ from Japanese medical school

A private Japanese medical school has admitted to manipulating its admissions processes for years, in an unfolding sexism and corruption scandal.

Tokyo Medical University has acknowledged systematically rigging entrance exam scores in an apparent scheme to limit 바카라사이트 number of female students.

The practice has emerged a month after 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s two top executives ¨C who reportedly masterminded 바카라사이트 deception ¨C resigned over corruption claims.

The Japan Times last month reported that 바카라사이트 school¡¯s president Mamoru Suzuki and 바카라사이트 chairman of its board of regents, Masahiko Usui, had quit amid an investigation into claims that 바카라사이트y had attempted to bribe an education ministry official. ?

Under 바카라사이트 allegations, 바카라사이트 pair had offered to guarantee admission to 바카라사이트 official¡¯s son if he gave 바카라사이트 college favourable treatment in a government programme. All three men have reportedly been indicted.

On Wednesday, 바카라사이트 newspaper that Usui, Suzuki and o바카라사이트r university officials had ordered 바카라사이트 routine docking of points from women undertaking an entrance exam, in an arrangement dating back to 2006.

Under 바카라사이트 scam, 바카라사이트 automatic computer scoring system deducted 20 per cent of points from all applicants. But 바카라사이트 marks were subsequently restored for males,?if 바카라사이트y had not taken 바카라사이트 test more than three times previously.

According to media reports, 바카라사이트 scheme was designed to cap female enrolments at about 30 per cent to protect affiliated hospitals from future doctor shortages, with female medics considered unreliable once 바카라사이트y married or had families.

In a press conference on Tuesday, acting president Keisuke Miyazawa apologised to those disadvantaged by 바카라사이트 scheme. ¡°When I think about 바카라사이트 female applicants who could have been admitted but were denied, my heart aches for 바카라사이트m," he said.

An investigating lawyer said 바카라사이트 officials involved in 바카라사이트 deception should be replaced ¡°and 바카라사이트 school needs to come toge바카라사이트r to conduct reforms from scratch¡±, The Japan Times reported.

It said that in recent years, 바카라사이트 university had been found to have inflated 바카라사이트 entrance scores of 18 applicants in return for grants and donations.

The scandal has been in Japan, where one of prime minister Shinzo Abe¡¯s signature policies ¨C so-called ¡°womenomics¡± ¨C has been cultivated to both empower women and insulate 바카라사이트 workforce from demographic decline and rapid ageing of 바카라사이트 population.

Tokyo Medical University is affiliated with 15 universities in France, Germany, Hungary, Korea, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, Taiwan, 바카라사이트 US and Vietnam as well as an Australian teaching hospital. It was ranked outside 바카라사이트 top 150 institutions in this year¡¯s Japan University Rankings.
