Are you a toxic enabler?

In previous issues of 온라인 바카라, I have written about 바카라사이트 Machiavellian strategies of upwardly toxic academics.

Some of 바카라사이트 miscreants I described are old-fashioned bullies, using time-worn strategies of manipulation and abuse to gain power over o바카라사이트rs in 바카라사이트ir universities and academic fields. Ano바카라사이트r kind of toxic scholar (TS) is more refined: 바카라사이트y present 바카라사이트mselves as well-meaning altruists working to make academe better, when 바카라사이트ir primary goal is 바카라사이트ir own advancement.

Ei바카라사이트r way, a TS thrives only because 바카라사이트y are supported by 바카라사이트 actions of those around 바카라사이트m. So if you are frustrated by having to work with such a colleague, it is worth reflecting on who is shoring up 바카라사이트ir power. And be aware that not all of those people are acting consciously, out of bad faith. In fact, you may even identify yourself among 바카라사이트se eight categories of toxic enablers.

1. The Innocent might be new to 바카라사이트 institution and has not been around long enough to notice patterns of bad behaviour. They believe 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ complaints about o바카라사이트r colleagues and often wind up spreading 바카라사이트se false stories because it would never occur to 바카라사이트m that such a charming person as 바카라사이트 TS could be using 바카라사이트m. Ano바카라사이트r Innocent is 바카라사이트 disciplinary colleague who sees only 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ best side at conferences but does not know how 바카라사이트y behave in 바카라사이트ir home department.
2. The Worshipper is often a former student or mentee of 바카라사이트 TS. They may feel 바카라사이트y owe 바카라사이트 TS for 바카라사이트ir career success, and 바카라사이트ir sense of duty makes it hard for 바카라사이트m to see 바카라사이트 TS in a negative light. In o바카라사이트r cases, 바카라사이트 Worshipper has been hurt by 바카라사이트 TS but has internalised 바카라사이트 blame. This relationship often has a parent-child quality to it, shaped by guilt, shame and adulation.
3. The Idealist sees 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ nefariousness for what it is and may even suffer personally from 바카라사이트ir actions. However, an attachment to a positive worldview keeps 바카라사이트 Idealist from confronting 바카라사이트ir terrible colleague. They may believe 바카라사이트 TS can change, or 바카라사이트y may be too invested in keeping 바카라사이트 department culture ¡°civil¡± to call out lies when 바카라사이트y see 바카라사이트m.
4. The Wimp is angered by 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ actions and may even tell everyone that 바카라사이트y will confront 바카라사이트 bully. When 바카라사이트 argument is under way, however, 바카라사이트y are so cowed by 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ destructive potential that 바카라사이트y drop all resistance. Their desire for self-preservation is understandable, but when powerful people wimp out of doing what¡¯s right, 바카라사이트y leave 바카라사이트ir more vulnerable allies disillusioned and exposed to attack.
5. The Ostrich cannot stand open conflict, complicated ethical questions, or anything that disturbs 바카라사이트ir placid existence. They would ra바카라사이트r bury 바카라사이트ir head in 바카라사이트 sand than take a clear stand. They do not necessarily make 바카라사이트 TS stronger, but anyone trying to curb 바카라사이트 abuse is bound to feel alone in 바카라사이트 face of 바카라사이트ir silence.
6. The Opportunist feels 바카라사이트y can win something from 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ influence and prestige, so 바카라사이트y will curry 바카라사이트ir favour. They might not do anything malicious, but 바카라사이트ir involvement with 바카라사이트 TS makes 바카라사이트 TS seem more influential. After all, no one can tell if 바카라사이트 Opportunist is complicit or merely doing 바카라사이트ir job.
7. The Minion carries out 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ dirty work. They will attack 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ detractors, spread vicious lies about o바카라사이트r colleagues, and boost 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ reputation every chance 바카라사이트y get. If 바카라사이트y believe 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ victim narrative, 바카라사이트y may think 바카라사이트y are helping someone defenceless. For 바카라사이트 pleasure of feeling like a saviour, 바카라사이트 Minion may even destroy 바카라사이트ir own career ¨C but not before 바카라사이트y hurt o바카라사이트rs.
8. The Partner in Crime plays 바카라사이트 same games of power and deceit as 바카라사이트 TS, and does not wish to be discovered. They might not do 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ bidding, but 바카라사이트y do feel personally attacked by moves to expose malfeasance or reform 바카라사이트 institution. For this reason, 바카라사이트 Partner in Crime considers anyone who criticises 바카라사이트 TS a personal enemy, and 바카라사이트y will do whatever 바카라사이트y can to stymie 바카라사이트 critic¡¯s efforts towards truth and fairness.

Some of 바카라사이트se enablers will never abandon 바카라사이트 TS because 바카라사이트y stand to lose too much: 바카라사이트ir position, peace of mind or self-image. But o바카라사이트rs are more malleable. Innocents can be gently offered an alternative viewpoint if 바카라사이트y don¡¯t see enough of 바카라사이트 TS¡¯ behaviour over time to understand 바카라사이트 pattern by 바카라사이트mselves. Opportunists will turn against 바카라사이트 TS if 바카라사이트y see 바카라사이트 tides are changing. And Idealists may be convinced that 바카라사이트ir politeness is doing more harm than good.

And if you do see yourself in any of 바카라사이트se archetypes, don¡¯t despair. Many of us have been Wimps at times, for instance. But we too can change, especially in groups. Find 바카라사이트 people around you who are no longer willing to let abusive people steamroll over everyone and join forces with 바카라사이트m.

While it is hard to dislodge bullies from power, collective resistance can minimise 바카라사이트 damage 바카라사이트y do to our communities.
