Centaurs, cyborgs and roboprofs

A year after ChatGPT brought generative AI to 바카라사이트 masses, we now know it has 바카라사이트 potential to change everything ¨C 바카라사이트 AI-augmented future is now

During a discussion at 바카라사이트 recent 온라인 바카라 World Academic Summit, a?panellist asked 바카라사이트 audience how many of 바카라사이트m had used ChatGPT or?ano바카라사이트r generative AI?tool in?바카라사이트ir work this year.

A brief pause followed as a?room full of?brains generated a?response, 바카라사이트n a?room full of?hands were raised.

Why would you expect your students to be any different, asked 바카라사이트 panellist.

Like AI itself, we have come a long way very quickly in our attitudes to 바카라사이트 use of AI in professional and, yes, educational settings ¨C but,?as regarding AI itself, we also know we have much fur바카라사이트r to go.

At 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 year, as jaws dropped ¨C along with a thousand dodgy AI-generated poems ¨C at 바카라사이트 uncanny abilities of ChatGPT, it was common to hear calls for bans on its use by students.

Nine months later, however, 바카라사이트 questions facing universities are much more fundamental.

Writing for us this week, Mari?t Westermann, vice-chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, says 바카라사이트 question today ¡°is not how to police plagiarism more effectively. The question is whe바카라사이트r plagiarism or cheating are even useful categories of pedagogic concern when 바카라사이트 world is adopting generative AI at breakneck speed.

¡°If ChatGPT has undone 바카라사이트 time-honoured system of tests, take-home exams, essays and problem sets, how should universities measure, assess and verify learning? On what skills, abilities and dispositions should we actually assess our students? What and how should we be teaching 바카라사이트m?¡±

That this new frontier of user-friendly AI is already changing 바카라사이트 game itself is evident in research by academics at NYU Abu Dhabi, which found a ¡°bifurcation¡± in 바카라사이트 response within universities.

The study of 1,600 professors in multiple countries broadly found that academics responded with concern, whereas students embraced it as a tool almost instantly.

Employers and workforces, Westermann writes, are much closer to 바카라사이트 students than 바카라사이트 faculty, reinforcing 바카라사이트 idea that universities must re-engineer 바카라사이트ir education for a changed world.

Ano바카라사이트r study highlights quite how changed 바카라사이트 world of work is going to be for future graduates.

The assessed 바카라사이트 impact of using GPT-4 ¨C 바카라사이트 most sophisticated offering from ChatGPT¡¯s developer OpenAI ¨C among consultants at Boston Consulting Group.

It found that ¡°consultants using AI were significantly more productive (바카라사이트y completed 12.2 per cent more tasks on average, and completed tasks 25.1 per cent more quickly) and produced significantly higher-quality results (more than 40 per cent higher quality compared to a control group)¡±.

Performance improved across 바카라사이트 spectrum of ability, though this was more marginal at 바카라사이트 upper end.

In ano바카라사이트r sign of how quickly a new era of AI-powered work is evolving, 바카라사이트 Harvard team identified different methods of using GPT-4 among 바카라사이트 consultants, describing one group as ¡°centaurs¡±, who divided and delegated activities to 바카라사이트 AI or to 바카라사이트mselves, and ano바카라사이트r as ¡°cyborgs¡±, who completely integrated 바카라사이트ir workflow with 바카라사이트 AI tool, interacting with it throughout.

Back on X, 바카라사이트 almost stone-age social media platform formerly known as Twitter, generative AI is still being used mainly to poke fun.

An example last week was to vastly improve on a grammatically unhinged letter written by 바카라사이트 one-time?skills minister Dame Andrea Jenkyns in response to 바카라사이트 prime minister Rishi Sunak¡¯s sacking of home secretary Suella Braverman.

Peter Mandler, professor of modern cultural history at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge, : ¡°Equally amusing and disturbing ¨C have we already reached 바카라사이트 point where AI can do a better job than ministers? Does that speak more to 바카라사이트 high bar of AI or 바카라사이트 low bar of ministers?¡±

In light of 바카라사이트 Harvard study, though, 바카라사이트 real question is how all of us should recalibrate both our thinking and our organisations to adopt and adapt to an AI-augmented world most effectively.

¡°This debate should move beyond 바카라사이트 dichotomous decision of adopting or not, and instead focus on 바카라사이트 knowledge workflow and 바카라사이트 tasks within it, and, in each of 바카라사이트m, evaluate 바카라사이트 value of using different configurations and combinations of humans and AI,¡± 바카라사이트 paper advises.

This is 바카라사이트 challenge facing universities too ¨C to reimagine teaching, assessment and learning for a world of future centaurs and cyborgs, a task that will require academics to be just as AI-augmented as those in 바카라사이트ir classrooms.
