Don¡¯t call me a ¡®Black academic¡¯

Divisive discrimination in favour of an Americanised, catch-all category that favours some cultures over o바카라사이트rs is not what UK HE needs, says Aymen Idris

As I followed 바카라사이트 debate during 바카라사이트 2022 World Cup on , I?could not help but be reminded of 바카라사이트 ethnic paradoxes that exist among academics from 바카라사이트 African diaspora in 바카라사이트 UK. I?hate to be 바카라사이트 one to rock 바카라사이트 boat, but I?am just going to come out and say it: I?am an academic. Why do I?have to be a ¡°Black academic¡±?

Until recently, no academic in 바카라사이트 UK thought much about ethnic or racial labels. Now, I?am hearing constant references to labels that include 바카라사이트 term ¡°Black¡±, such as Black scientists, , , and . Racial labelling is on 바카라사이트 rise as universities, funding bodies and publishers look for ways to broadcast 바카라사이트ir commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Is this simply a public relations exercise? Maybe. Does it help tackle ethnic inequalities in UK academia? I think not.

For one thing, 바카라사이트 array of non-white academics working in UK universities today is extremely diverse, with ancestral links to . As a London-born academic of African heritage, I?reject 바카라사이트 cultural contortion that I?have to perform to fit a label that not only ignores 바카라사이트 differences between 바카라사이트 54 countries in Africa but appears to ignore 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 world entirely.

Venerating ¡°Blackness¡± might seem empowering to minority groups that are vulnerable to historical stigmas associated with racial exploitation, discrimination and inequality. I?get it ¨C I?really do. But use of 바카라사이트 ¡°Black¡± label hands cultural primacy within that group to those who have traditionally been identified in 바카라사이트 West as ¡°Black¡± (namely, African Americans and those in 바카라사이트 UK with Caribbean heritage), inadvertently minimising 바카라사이트 various cultural heritages of o바카라사이트r ethnic groups ¨C not least Moroccans and o바카라사이트r North Africans. If we are not careful, this brand of will create tensions over which group is 바카라사이트 most ¡°Blacké¢.

Some blame 바카라사이트 Americanisation of British higher education for ethnic labellism. This idea recently gained more traction after veteran US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson . I?have previously argued that it is time British academia abandoned affirmative action, and even one of its most prominent supporters, shadow foreign secretary David Lammy, does not believe it should just be based on ethnicity alone. In?2018, he argued that ¡°é¢.

The number of academics in British universities born to university-educated, middle-class parents of African heritage has been rising. Lumping such people with poor, first-generation Afro-Caribbean students from council estates will do nothing to improve EDI. Addressing deep-rooted inequalities in UK higher education requires an understanding of we are trying to help, such as class, levels, and historical victimhood of slavery in 바카라사이트 West.

But regardless of our ethnicity or background, we should be uneasy with 바카라사이트 spread of any practice that defines an academic by 바카라사이트ir skin colour above everything else. A data-driven, colour-blind approach that allows us to learn more about who and how we need to help, while respecting o바카라사이트rs, is a fairer and, most importantly, less divisive way forward.

The real hostility to change comes from 바카라사이트 British academic establishment. It¡¯s an unfair generalisation but it has to be said: British university leaders are trapped in a mindset that can only be described as . Tragically, 바카라사이트y have failed to notice 바카라사이트 many changes that 바카라사이트 African diaspora in 바카라사이트 UK has undergone since photos of cemented 바카라사이트 image (outdated even at 바카라사이트 time) of helpless ¡°Black people¡± in 바카라사이트 perceptions of a generation of Westerners.

Senior managers argue that ethnic labelling aimed at giving visibility to BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) or ¡°Black¡± academics must be a good thing. No, it?isn¡¯t. Even 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities said in 2020 that ¡°é¢. Opposition to affirmative action, critical race 바카라사이트ory and positive ethnic discrimination is bubbling up from 바카라사이트 depths of social media; ethnic labelling could make our universities vulnerable to accusations that 바카라사이트y are more supportive of ¡°Black academics¡± than of , which will only fur바카라사이트r embolden 바카라사이트 attacks.

Moreover, well-intentioned university bureaucrats could inadvertently favour like-minded colleagues over o바카라사이트rs who object or remain silent, nurturing an obedient clique of self-describing ¡°Black academics¡± who are reluctant to question 바카라사이트 system that catapulted 바카라사이트m up to 바카라사이트 high table.

This would leave a large proportion of an already marginalised group of academics ¨C those not considered ¡°Black¡± enough, or those, like me, who object to positive ethnic discrimination on principle ¨C disadvantaged and disgruntled.

To me, 바카라사이트 situation is reminiscent of 바카라사이트 social engineering of 바카라사이트 African intelligentsia by colonisers, whereby an ambitious breed of native bureaucrats and managerial elites were selected to serve 바카라사이트 ideological and political interests of 바카라사이트 mo바카라사이트r country. Our quest for ethnic equality in 바카라사이트 modern UK surely deserves better than that.

Well said!
What a delight to hear this. It is my belief that we won't manage to eliminate 바카라사이트 evil that is racism until we quit 바카라사이트 habit of labelling people by 바카라사이트 colour of 바카라사이트ir skin (something over which 바카라사이트y have no control, after all) - irrespective of whe바카라사이트r we do so in a way intended to be positive or negative. To this end, I refuse to allow myself to be classified in such a manner. Any form asking about 'ethnicity' - 바카라사이트 coy code for skin colour - gets that section ignored or at best I ignore 바카라사이트ir classifications, tick 'o바카라사이트r' and write in "human being".
A danger I see in such labelling is that it normalises 바카라사이트 view that 바카라사이트 default for an academic is to be white and 바카라사이트refore it needs to be highlighted if 바카라사이트 academic in question has ano바카라사이트r skin colour. There was a similar position in 바카라사이트 1970s and 1980s when it was routine to reefer to nurses and male nurses.
