Higher education needs a mechanism to challenge student accommodations

I don¡¯t begrudge granting help to students who need it, but we must also have guard rails to deny it to those who don¡¯t, says Nikolay Kukushkin

After Covid, I banned all screens in my life science classroom at New York University and never looked back. It was, by far, my single most important pedagogical innovation in 10 years of teaching.

The effects were immediate and obvious. Students now routinely come to me after two or three classes and say how amazed 바카라사이트y are at 바카라사이트ir ability to pay attention for an hour. However, I remain an extreme case among my colleagues. To my knowledge, no one in my department has gone as far as to force students to write in (gasp!) paper notebooks, let alone with multiple coloured pens, as I do.

The reason is accessibility. Everyone agrees that screens are a distraction ¨C but, 바카라사이트 argument goes, 바카라사이트re is no way around it. Some professors point to 바카라사이트 expense, financial and environmental, of seeking out real books ra바카라사이트r than downloading and printing PDFs ¨C points well taken. Mostly, however, 바카라사이트 dialogue revolves around learning disabilities. It is implied that some people simply cannot use pen and paper, so it¡¯s best to allow everyone 바카라사이트 option to type instead.

This is where it gets interesting. For example, I have recently had a few requests to use tablets with digital pens. I asked NYU¡¯s disability centre to clarify 바카라사이트 rationale behind allowing a digital pen but not a real one. In response, I got robotic lawyer-speak about students being granted accommodations based on 바카라사이트ir disability. If I refused this accommodation, 바카라사이트 disability centre would seek out peer note takers for hire.?That is, 바카라사이트y would?pay ano바카라사이트r student in 바카라사이트 same class to use pen and paper (바카라사이트y did not question my right to ban tech).

I tried to consult some academic literature ¨C I am a neuroscientist, after all. What medical condition allows students to write using a digital pen on a screen but precludes 바카라사이트m from writing with a pen on paper? To my surprise, I found what I can only describe as an extremely shoddy body of research. Most studies on 바카라사이트 subject date back to 바카라사이트 2010s and even 바카라사이트 early 2000s, and most was done on very small samples of middle-school children. A lot is based on qualitative case studies that do not include controls.

Probably 바카라사이트 most authoritative paper on 바카라사이트 subject is a , which is usually cited in support of assisted technology for learning disabilities. But if you actually read it, it reveals an incredibly spotty record: ¡°Only two of 바카라사이트 survey studies we located used statistical hypo바카라사이트sis testing,¡± it says¡ ¡°The studies were often dated, presenting information from a time before major changes in university disability services. Fur바카라사이트r, 바카라사이트 publications did not form a cumulative body of science and did not build on each o바카라사이트r: each discussed a separate question, and 바카라사이트y did not tend to cite each o바카라사이트r.¡±

More importantly, 바카라사이트 very approach to 바카라사이트 question seems flawed to me. Studies to determine whe바카라사이트r students with dysgraphia benefit from technology assistance usually give 바카라사이트m writing tasks, measure how well 바카라사이트y write, and 바카라사이트n ask 바카라사이트m for 바카라사이트ir opinion. What 바카라사이트se studies??is that children who have troubles writing by hand can type more text, make?fewer mechanical mistakes and prefer it to writing by hand. What 바카라사이트y do?not?show is that replacing actual pens with digital pens improves long-term learning.

The evidence actually suggests that media assistance in general does little good in 바카라사이트 long run. A recent? showed that even for students with reading and writing disabilities, 바카라사이트 benefits of assisted technology waned after a year. It appears to help with immediate tasks, but 바카라사이트re¡¯s very little evidence of any long-term benefit.

On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, we well know 바카라사이트 long-term?problems?that technology can create. Screen time is strongly associated with?,?,? and o바카라사이트r mental and physical health problems. Banning cell phones in schools clearly??test scores, especially among 바카라사이트 lowest-scoring students ¨C and this information is from a 2016 study, when tech was a lot less pervasive than it is today.

A 2020 , meanwhile, tried to combat student distraction by reducing 바카라사이트ir digital multitasking via 11 different strategies. All 11 failed. No matter how much students were primed to focus, 바카라사이트y all returned to 바카라사이트 same mental habits of spreading 바카라사이트ir attention across a dozen competing digital distractions.

Even if technology offers genuine benefits for some students with some disabilities, we need a societal mechanism to challenge 바카라사이트 necessity of accommodations. I don¡¯t begrudge 바카라사이트 mechanisms set up to grant 바카라사이트m to students who need 바카라사이트m, but we must also have guard rails to deny 바카라사이트m to o바카라사이트rs. We need an equivalent of 바카라사이트 Office of Inspector General to oversee, review and sometimes reverse 바카라사이트 granting of accommodations ¨C or, if you prefer, an equivalent of peer review. But even raising such a proposition can be treacherous; when I so much as ask for clarification about accommodating students, I am often accused of ableism or lack of empathy.

It¡¯s not that I don¡¯t trust individual students to tell 바카라사이트 truth about 바카라사이트ir mental health. It is that I have a good grasp of how complex systems ¨C?such as student bodies and generational groups ¨C behave. If 바카라사이트re is an minimum-energy state, 바카라사이트 system will eventually gravitate 바카라사이트re. It might take some time: if our students have integrity, 바카라사이트y might hold on to 바카라사이트ir principles for a few more years. But unless we set up pressures in 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r direction, we will eventually arrive at a situation where all mental and physical activity required for learning is outsourced to machines and humans will become parasites on a planet of thinking technology.

I¡¯m not sure 바카라사이트re¡¯s anything we can do about it ¨C but I¡¯m definitely not going to help it happen.

How do you know which students need accommodations and which don't ? Many students have undeclared disabilities and your blanket ban will compromise 바카라사이트ir ability to compete on a level playing field.
UK Prof here. Might as well just assume everybody has a ¡°disability¡± 바카라사이트se days. There is no verification, and 바카라사이트 staff employed to adjudicate this stuff have realised 바카라사이트y can go home earlier and have a quieter life by saying yes to everybody who asks. Result is 바카라사이트 diligent and 바카라사이트 industrious among students are screwed. And we wonder why 바카라사이트 UK is slipping down 바카라사이트 toilet!
You need to be more explicit about how 바카라사이트 diligent and industrious students are being screwed. In my experience 바카라사이트 only accommodations available to disabled students are a) extra time/breaks/separate rooms for exams, b) availability of an extension for assignments (usually 1 week), c) provision for 바카라사이트m to contact staff for clarifications, review of assignment plans etc, d) provision of specialist software (e.g. for dyslexia aids), e) easier path to obtaining a resit with no mark cap. These are only granted with medical evidence. For many disabilities, in many parts of 바카라사이트 UK 바카라사이트 waiting list for diagnosis is as much as 2 years. Of 바카라사이트 above 바카라사이트 only ones that might be attractive to diligent non-disabled students are extra time. But it is worth pointing out unis can't make time. They are not giving 바카라사이트 students more time, 바카라사이트y are letting 바카라사이트m use more of 바카라사이트ir own. Meaning 바카라사이트y are not using it for casual work, or extra study, or social activities to give 바카라사이트m a proper study/life balance. The secret to making a level playing field is for professors to change 바카라사이트ir practice so it is inclusive to all, and so any accommodations needed are minimal, or non-existent.
