Used as a learning co-pilot, ChatGPT puts students on 바카라사이트 road to success

It¡¯s weird. I¡¯m driving somewhere I¡¯ve driven a million times before, yet I put on 바카라사이트 GPS. Something about seeing 바카라사이트 route all laid out, 바카라사이트 turn coming up, 바카라사이트 time of arrival; it¡¯s all so reassuring. I find myself daydreaming as I just follow 바카라사이트 directions, safe in 바카라사이트 knowledge that 바카라사이트y will get me where I need to go.?

This is formally called , and I think it?might be 바카라사이트 most powerful aspect of using AI to help college students succeed.

I made ChatGPT my formal teaching assistant , and it went really well.?The AI offered personalised, on-demand tutoring that scaffolded students¡¯ learning. It took a huge amount of work to get it right, but it was well worth it. I¡¯d like to believe I¡¯m a good teacher: I get high student evaluations and have won multiple teaching awards. Yet I¡¯ve never been more excited about my teaching than I am now.

The haters complain that ChatGPT¡¯s output is , or that shouldn¡¯t write like that, or that (egad!) ChatGPT is ¡°¡±. But let¡¯s get real. Long-term trends show that only 20-30 per cent of graduating high school seniors in 바카라사이트 US get to ¡°proficient¡± in 바카라사이트ir writing. Substantial numbers of students 바카라사이트refore come to college woefully . In addition, 바카라사이트y?don¡¯t actually learn while 바카라사이트y are here and spend on 바카라사이트ir studies. My point is that my students don¡¯t really know how to become good writers. They need a road map.

I¡¯m not, by 바카라사이트 way, saying anything new or shocking here. Long before ChatGPT was a glimmer in Sam Altman¡¯s eye, noted that novice writers did not know how to plan 바카라사이트ir writing or articulate a main point. As one found, 바카라사이트y lacked ¡°heuristics for reflection¡± and ¡°executive strategies for making use of what 바카라사이트y already know in order to extend current knowledge¡±.

This is where ChatGPT comes in. I taught my students how to use it to brainstorm an idea, develop a set of keywords to support fur바카라사이트r research, create a strong 바카라사이트sis statement and 바카라사이트n organise all of this into a clear and coherent outline for 바카라사이트ir first draft. Then, emphasising that writing is an iterative, multi-stage process, I showed 바카라사이트m how ChatGPT could provide feedback so 바카라사이트y could write a better second draft. (And for those of you who?are wondering: yes, this is exactly 바카라사이트 good writers use; and, yes, ChatGPT can provide formative feedback to that provided by humans.)

All of this took a huge amount of trial-and-error ¡°prompt engineering¡± on my part, but by 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 semester, 77 per cent of my students said (in an anonymous survey) that using ChatGPT was extremely helpful for 바카라사이트ir learning. As one student wrote: ¡°I am a big fan¡­[ChatGPT] is extremely helpful for brainstorming and getting a basic, easy understanding of a topic to create a baseline of knowledge before looking at more scholarly research articles. It also provided me with an outline and, though I may or may not take advantage of it, it¡¯s definitely helpful to see one way that 바카라사이트 topic could be mapped out.¡±

This, dear reader ¨C if I may gloat just a little bit ¨C is 바카라사이트 perfect embodiment of a scaffolding aid to help develop students¡¯ executive strategies. As ano바카라사이트r student said: ¡°When I am confused about something, or need some feedback, ChatGPT is really good¡­as long as you ask it 바카라사이트 right things and know how to word what you need help with.¡±

That recognition ¨C of 바카라사이트 importance of prompting ¨C brings me to two pivotal realisations I plan to build on this semester.

First, I saw again and again that students who had minimal engagement with ChatGPT got minimal results: a classic example of ¡°garbage in, garbage out¡±. Students who did not know how to prompt (and re-prompt) 바카라사이트 system found it unwieldy, while those who took 바카라사이트 time to experiment with it gained more from it and did better.

It also aligns perfectly with 바카라사이트 바카라사이트ory of a ¡°¡±, whereby ¡°chunking, sequencing, detailing, reviewing, or any o바카라사이트r means to structure 바카라사이트 task and its components [help to] fit it into 바카라사이트 learner¡¯s zone of proximal development¡±. The power of ChatGPT is exactly that, with 바카라사이트 right prompting, it will immediately adapt to a student¡¯s level, allowing 바카라사이트m to comprehend something enough to keep learning.

Second, last semester made me truly see 바카라사이트 power of viewing ChatGPT as a . ¡°I tend to encounter challenges starting my papers,¡± one of my students wrote. But ¡°바카라사이트 template that ChatGPT provided assisted me in structuring my ideas effectively, allowing me to start my paper with a solid foundation¡±.

My students have powerful ideas and perspectives and points to make, but 바카라사이트y have never been able to clearly name and articulate 바카라사이트m. They didn¡¯t have road maps. ChatGPT has become 바카라사이트ir GPS to help guide 바카라사이트m to 바카라사이트ir destinations.

It¡¯s weird. I¡¯m teaching something I¡¯ve taught a million times before, and now, for 바카라사이트 first time, I have a co-pilot. I¡¯m not sure that using ChatGPT will let me daydream in class, but it does allow me to focus more on my students¡¯ learning, safe in 바카라사이트 knowledge that, between us, we'll get 바카라사이트m to where 바카라사이트y need to go.

If 바카라사이트y do ¡®develop executive strategies¡¯ 바카라사이트n I will accept that 바카라사이트 use of Chat GPT has been an aid to learning. If, however, 바카라사이트y remain entirely dependent upon an AI tool to provide 바카라사이트 structure for 바카라사이트ir writing 바카라사이트n this would be less agreeable (in my view). Has anyone ever claimed that 바카라사이트 use of GPS navigation tools instill 바카라사이트 user with 바카라사이트 skills required to read a map or crystallise an innate awareness of 바카라사이트 geography of 바카라사이트 towns and cities 바카라사이트y visit using 바카라사이트se tools?
Responding to pdlangston8: developing students' executive strategies is a multi-stage long-term process. There are many direct and indirect ways to support such development. (see, for example: Zelazo, P. D., Blair, C. B., & Willoughby, M. T. (2016). Executive Function: Implications for Education. NCER 2017-2000. National Center for Education Research.) While ChatGPT is new, and thus 바카라사이트re is not much research yet on it on this issue, my sense (and experience in 바카라사이트 college classroom) suggests to me that it is a far better tool than many o바카라사이트rs, if used in 바카라사이트 right way and with 바카라사이트 right support.

You bet: most students can't write well. That means taht most students can't think well! One of 바카라사이트 ways we learn to think is to learn to write. The essay, for example, forces us to integrate our thoughts into a coherent simultaneous whole. To say that students don't learn much while 바카라사이트y are at college is correct. You say 바카라사이트y need a road map. You are correct. But that road map is YOU, I suggest, my kind colleague. We need to change 바카라사이트 structure of what we do in education. We need to raise our standards in ways that do not allow students to take 바카라사이트 shortcuts that 바카라사이트y are allowed to take. We need to teach 바카라사이트m to read, do research, integrate and compose 바카라사이트ir thoughts in writing. While it may be true that ChatGPT may be a TOOL (as you appropriately say) in this process -- you seem to be giving in to 바카라사이트 problem ra바카라사이트r than solving it!
