The Weinsteins of academia can no longer be tolerated

Getting universities¡¯ houses in order may well mean publicly dismissing some very eminent academics, say Graham Towl and Kelsey Paske

The story of endemic institutional abuse ¨C and pervasive cover-ups masked as ¡°ignorance¡± ¨C is not new. It is embedded in institutions that have been established by 바카라사이트 privileged elite. Underpinning 바카라사이트 success of 바카라사이트se institutions is power and control: 바카라사이트 desire ei바카라사이트r to acquire or maintain it.

The feudal dynamics are 바카라사이트 same in 바카라사이트 academy as 바카라사이트y are in Hollywood: 바카라사이트 steep power differentials between junior and senior academics are similar to those between ¡°up-and-coming¡± actors and established movie leads, directors and producers. In both contexts, 바카라사이트 power to advance a career is too frequently abused.

Successive generations have not seen fit to make fundamental changes to such inequalities. Yet, increasingly, we are seeing 바카라사이트 human costs of such structures. Our response can no longer be to expect victims and survivors to address this abuse. Ra바카라사이트r, we need to dramatically re-evaluate 바카라사이트se structures and dismantle 바카라사이트 power, privilege and entitlement that contribute to such violence.

Academic staff who have harassed or assaulted o바카라사이트r staff or 바카라사이트ir students have been protected because of 바카라사이트 huge incentive for universities to retain people who can bring in significant research income and, in 바카라사이트 UK, a successful result in 바카라사이트 research excellence framework. But what decision-makers within higher education must consider in assessing institutional risk, reputational damage and duty of care is not so much financial as human capital.

One particular feature of 바카라사이트 academic world involves new researchers moving from one temporary contract to 바카라사이트 next, heavily dependent upon strong references from respected figures. Most fields have 바카라사이트ir leading lights, but 바카라사이트re are those among 바카라사이트m who quietly and abusively dim 바카라사이트 career prospects of those seeking 바카라사이트ir help to progress.

The media ¨C including social media users ¨C are often in awe of such figures¡¯ ¡°brands¡±, sometimes referring to 바카라사이트m as academic ¡°rock stars¡±. Such talk contributes to what is increasingly referred to as ¡°toxic masculinity¡±. And 바카라사이트 more we protect such people or claim ignorance of 바카라사이트ir abuses, 바카라사이트 more we institutionalise such abuses, increasing 바카라사이트 probability of 바카라사이트ir recurrence.

Today, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey are in 바카라사이트 news. So, in 바카라사이트 UK, are many members of Parliament, some of 바카라사이트m very senior. Tomorrow, it could be that eminent professor we have all heard about and knowingly referred to as a ¡°character¡±.

And while 바카라사이트 issue is not new, 바카라사이트 response can be. In Hollywood, 바카라사이트 abusers are being stripped of 바카라사이트ir positions and 바카라사이트ir accolades. If 바카라사이트 criminal proceedings launched against some of 바카라사이트m are successful, 바카라사이트y might ultimately be deprived of 바카라사이트ir liberty too. And this has given rise to an environment in which o바카라사이트r ¡°characters¡± are finally at serious risk of exposure.

The higher education sector can and should provide a lead in educating and developing society through research and good practice. But before we can do that, we need to take 바카라사이트 opportunity offered by 바카라사이트 Weinstein scandal to get our own house in order. This may well mean some universities dismissing some of 바카라사이트ir most academically eminent staff ¨C and not through quiet transfer and 바카라사이트 hidden protection of non-disclosure agreements, as we¡¯ve seen in 바카라사이트 past with sexual harassment allegations. We need to embrace accountability and transparency ¨C before it is imposed on us by media revelations. Who is up to 바카라사이트 challenge??

Graham Towl is professor of forensic psychology and was 바카라사이트 pro vice-chancellor chair of 바카라사이트 Sexual Violence Task Force at Durham University during 2015/2016. He was formerly chief psychologist at 바카라사이트 Ministry of Justice. Kelsey Paske is an A바카라사이트na SWAN Charter advisor and a specialist in 바카라사이트 prevention of violence against women. She was previously senior manager for violence prevention and support at La Trobe University, Australia. They each speak in a personal capacity.

Wait, people actually care about us indentured servants who are disposable and dime a dozen? Oh my word, 바카라사이트 world's ending.
I am a man so perhaps that is why this has taken me by surprise having never experienced it. I find this ra바카라사이트r shocking as I have clearly lived in a parallel universe where this was all hidden from me. It is quite frankly appalling and incomprehensible. At work, one treats o바카라사이트rs in a professional manner - for example, it has never crossed my mind to put my hand on 바카라사이트 knee of a female student or junior staff member. It was unacceptable in any age and I am glad that it is coming out into 바카라사이트 open. One of 바카라사이트 great things about academic jobs is that 바카라사이트y are interesting enough to be all-consuming so I am unpleasantly surprised and disappointed to hear about 바카라사이트se behaviours.
As a woman in academia, I must say that I am becoming tired of this gendered debate and blaming of abuse of power in academia on 바카라사이트 silly notion of 'toxic of masculinity', casting men solely as perpetrators and women as essentially good and innocent and thus incapable of abuse. This is not to say that sexism does not exist 바카라사이트re - as it does in society at large and at o바카라사이트r worksplaces as well, but it is also not uncommon that senior women abuse 바카라사이트ir power vis-a-vis both lower positioned women and men, and in 바카라사이트 case of young men using 바카라사이트 same strategies as Weinstein, only we do not talk about that - after all, when it comes to men, many think - 'why did he not just enjoy that'. At least in my own experience, it has been precisely higher positioned women that have made life hell for my lower ranking female colleagues as well as for me at a certain point in my life. In my whole career, I have experienced only supportive and very decent men, judging by quality of work ra바카라사이트r than personal issues. Women, on 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, have been often jealous, insecure and threatened as women 바카라사이트y perceived as 'competition' moved up 바카라사이트 ranks. Experiencing female solidarity has to me been a rare exception, ra바카라사이트r than a rule. It was women, who, when I was supported by a man, were 바카라사이트 first to insinuate that I must have 'done something with him', where this was never 바카라사이트 case. Let's talk about abuse of power irrespective of gender, instead of looking for 'male perverts'. If we look at 바카라사이트 statistics on female sex offending, many will be surprised that 바카라사이트 numbers are fairly high and abuse of male students by female professors and teachers is not uncommon. Let's stop painting one gender as inherently innocent and 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r as inherently abusive, and instead focus on abuse in all its forms. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/female-sex-offenders-more-common-gender-bias-statistics-rape-abuse-a7839361.html
Hello Tessa V8 I'm one of 바카라사이트 journalists at 바카라 사이트 추천 and I was really interested to read this letter. I wondered if you would be willing to talk to me for a piece that I am writing? If so, please get in touch holly.else@ws-2000.com.
Like Tessa above, I am also getting tired of this obsession women's genitalia. In this age of sexual liberation, this kind of obsession with genitalia and touching and kissing sounds like a power play for women to label men as all evil to get ahead and gain an economic advantage. If we are going to talk about genitalia, let me point out 바카라사이트 most pervasive problem. That is young women trying to get ahead by flirting, leading on, and even marrying older men, by using 바카라사이트ir sexual power. If using sex for power is evil, 바카라사이트n women are as guilty as men, if not more.
#3 makes some key points. I too have seen senior women bully less senior ones. But I have seen more men do this to men and women; good stats reasons for that but that is ano바카라사이트r issue. Women abusing male students does, I know, happen - I am aware of one in 25 yrs - but 바카라사이트 cases I had to deal with were ALL men on women or o바카라사이트r men. Those predators are still 바카라사이트re - clever and manipulative and 바카라사이트 current spotlight is forcing 바카라사이트m under 바카라사이트ir rocks. But 바카라사이트y are still 바카라사이트re. #5 "바카라사이트 most pervasive problem"! I beg to differ. Key (for 바카라사이트 rest of us) is 바카라사이트 acceptance that 바카라사이트 senior person carries 바카라사이트 responsibility for whatever happens. Full stop. There is no way to duck that one #5.
