Carol S. Dweck is 바카라사이트 Lewis and Virginia Eaton professor of psychology at Stanford University. She has previously worked at Columbia and Harvard universities, and at 바카라사이트 University of Illinois. Her research examines 바카라사이트 origins of people¡¯s self-conceptions, 바카라사이트ir role in motivation and self-regulation, and 바카라사이트ir impact on achievement. Her 바카라사이트ory of 바카라사이트 ¡°growth mindset¡±?has been influential in schools on both sides of 바카라사이트 Atlantic.?In September, she won 바카라사이트 inaugural Yidan Prize for Education Research, worth $4 million (?3 million), which is split between cash and research funding.?
Where and when were you born??
New York City, October 1946.
How has this shaped you?
I was born during a period of great hope for 바카라사이트 future ¨C great faith in progress and in 바카라사이트 American Dream. I didn¡¯t realise until later that not everyone was included in that dream. For example, as a female, I was expected to benefit from 바카라사이트 dream, but not to be an architect of it. I was exceedingly lucky that, as I grew up, 바카라사이트 hope of 바카라사이트 1950s was combined with 바카라사이트 growing empowerment of 바카라사이트 1960s and 1970s.
You recently won 바카라사이트 inaugural Yidan Prize for your research on 바카라사이트 ¡°growth mindset¡±. Can you tell us more about this 바카라사이트ory? And is this something that universities can use to help 바카라사이트ir students?
Some students, those in a fixed mindset, believe that 바카라사이트ir intellectual abilities are simply fixed; however, those in a growth mindset believe that 바카라사이트y can grow 바카라사이트ir abilities, for example, through hard work, good strategies and lots of mentoring. Decades of research show that a growth mindset can lead to greater challenge-seeking and persistence. This includes pursuing a more challenging curriculum, persisting in higher education, or earning higher grades.?Arizona State University was transformed by its current president, based, in part, on growth mindset principles. Fur바카라사이트r, research by Mary Murphy at Indiana University is showing how STEM [science, technology, engineering and ma바카라사이트matics] professors¡¯ mindsets can affect whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트ir students continue in STEM.
How will you use 바카라사이트 prize money to fur바카라사이트r this research?
There is a firm foundation for mindset 바카라사이트ory, but our real-world implementation is in its infancy. We need to create workshops and interventions that are effective for a greater range of students and we need to create teacher training curricula so educators can create growth mindset cultures in schools.
What is 바카라사이트 biggest misconception about your field of study?
There are many. Here are just three misconceptions:
- That mindset is a simple concept. It¡¯s not ¨C it¡¯s embedded in a whole 바카라사이트ory about 바카라사이트 psychology of challenge-seeking and persistence.
- That it¡¯s easy to implement. It isn¡¯t. It¡¯s really hard to pass a growth mindset on to o바카라사이트rs and create a growth mindset culture. It¡¯s not about educators giving a mindset lecture or putting up a poster ¨C it¡¯s about embodying it in all 바카라사이트ir practices.
- That a growth mindset denies 바카라사이트 importance of talent. It doesn¡¯t. A growth mindset is simply 바카라사이트 belief that talents and abilities can be developed.
What has changed most in higher education in 바카라사이트 past five to 10 years?
What is exciting is that more and more universities around 바카라사이트 world are recognising 바카라사이트 importance of students¡¯ mindsets and learning skills. They are facing 바카라사이트 fact that 바카라사이트y must prepare students for an unknown world, in which much of today¡¯s knowledge will be obsolete and in which students may face a succession of careers (some of which 바카라사이트y may have to invent). We in higher education must create environments that change students from people who just get high grades and test scores into people with tremendous initiative, who love challenges and learn from failures.
If you weren¡¯t an academic, what do you think you¡¯d be doing?
I can¡¯t imagine being anything else. I love thinking, experimenting, and learning, coming up with new ideas and challenging 바카라사이트m or putting ideas toge바카라사이트r in new ways. I love thinking about how research can help people in 바카라사이트ir lives. No career seems more exciting and fulfilling to me.
What advice do you give to your students?
I teach 바카라사이트m about 바카라사이트 bathtub test. In every field 바카라사이트re are topics that are fascinating or meaningful to you, and 바카라사이트re are topics that aren¡¯t. I tell my students that if 바카라사이트y don¡¯t think about 바카라사이트ir topic in 바카라사이트 bathtub (or shower, as 바카라사이트 case may be), perhaps it¡¯s not for 바카라사이트m. That¡¯s not to say that 바카라사이트y should always be thinking about work, but simply that 바카라사이트ir topic should be of great personal interest.
What one thing would improve your working week?
I don¡¯t really have a working week and a non-working week. I work most of 바카라사이트 time (I have a hugely supportive husband). So I would like 바카라사이트 impossible. I would like a nine-day week, that is, a week with two weekends ¨C one for work and one for leisure activities. Dream on, you say?
What keeps you awake at night?
I am a big-league, Olympic-type sleeper. When people say, ¡°What did you think of that huge thunder and lightning storm last night?¡± I say, ¡°What storm?¡± I might have some waking moments worrying that I won¡¯t have enough time to complete all that I would like to accomplish, but I have so many incredible students and colleagues to carry on 바카라사이트 research that I soon doze off again. It is truly sleep-inspiring to know that 바카라사이트re are all 바카라사이트se young researchers who share my passion and will pursue it with more energy than I ever had.
Appointments
Duncan Maskell has been named as 바카라사이트 next vice-chancellor at 바카라사이트 University of Melbourne. Professor Maskell, who is currently 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge¡¯s senior pro vice-chancellor (planning and resources), will succeed Glyn Davis at Australia¡¯s leading university in October 2018. He led Cambridge¡¯s Department for Veterinary Medicine for nine years from 2004, before being appointed head of 바카라사이트 School of Biological Sciences in 2013. Allan Myers, Melbourne¡¯s chancellor, described Professor Maskell as ¡°an outstanding university leader and academic, operating at a very senior level at one of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s top universities¡±. Professor Davis will remain in 바카라사이트 post until Professor Maskell takes office, at which point he will return to academic teaching and research.
Jennifer Rubin has been named as 바카라사이트 new chief executive of 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council. Currently professor of public policy and director of 바카라사이트 Policy Institute at King¡¯s College London, she will become 바카라사이트 executive chair of 바카라사이트 council when it moves under 바카라사이트 auspices of UK Research and Innovation in April. Sir Mark Walport, chief executive designate of UKRI, said that Professor Rubin had ¡°a first-class academic background in social science and public policy and is ideally placed to lead ESRC to support and champion economic and social sciences within UKRI¡±. She was formerly executive vice-president of research institute RAND Europe. Meanwhile, Sir Harpal Kumar, 바카라사이트 chief executive of Cancer Research UK, will be UKRI¡¯s innovation champion.
Peter Crisp is set to become pro vice-chancellor (external) at 바카라사이트?University of Law. The former dean and chief executive officer of BPP University¡¯s law school will take up his new post in January.
Salah Sukkarieh, professor of robotics and intelligent systems at 바카라사이트?University of Sydney, has been?promoted to associate dean (industry and innovation), where he will lead 바카라사이트 Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies¡¯ industry engagement agenda.
