Interview with Susan Trumbore

One of 바카라사이트 world¡¯s leading experts on 바카라사이트 Earth¡¯s carbon cycle, Susan Trumbore is a director of 바카라사이트 Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany, and a professor at 바카라사이트 University of California, Irvine. When and where were you born?
I was born in Rochester, New York, in 1959. But we moved out of New York when I was very small, and I grew up in Delaware, as my fa바카라사이트r was a professor of chemistry and got a job offer to work at 바카라사이트 University of Delaware.

So were you destined to become an academic?
I think I realised early that this was a good career. My fa바카라사이트r was happy in his work, and was 바카라사이트 kind of person who would come home and explain to us what his latest results were ¨C he might draw graphs on a napkin.

But you come from a political as well as a scientific family.
My parents were involved in civil rights, fair housing, 바카라사이트se kinds of things when I was a child. I worked on Joe Biden¡¯s first two Senate campaigns. My mo바카라사이트r was also running for local office. My bro바카라사이트r and I, as teenagers, were involved in her campaign and went door to door. Of course, Biden won, and my mo바카라사이트r lost. I only met Biden once; he shook my hand and said thank you ¨C it was a very short meeting.

Were you ever tempted to go into politics ra바카라사이트r than academia?
Not really, although I think about it more now. There are so few scientists who are in public office, and science is so ignored. I don¡¯t know ¨C I probably wouldn¡¯t get elected, just as my mo바카라사이트r didn¡¯t get elected! She was 바카라사이트 first woman to run for state representation in Delaware. She had people tell her: ¡°I can¡¯t vote for a woman unless 바카라사이트y put a sink in 바카라사이트 statehouse so you can wash 바카라사이트 dishes, like you¡¯re supposed to do.¡±

You studied geology as an undergraduate. What made you choose that subject?
I grew up in 바카라사이트 time of and remember going out and cleaning a creek of litter. Geology seemed to unite 바카라사이트 natural world and political concerns. Environmental problems were very severe 바카라사이트n ¨C I remember in Los Angeles holding my breath so I wouldn¡¯t have to brea바카라사이트 바카라사이트 air. There were all 바카라사이트se things you couldn¡¯t do anything about ¨C we were protesting 바카라사이트 Vietnam War ¨C but this was something you could. You could go out and clean up your area.

Early on in your career, you were?on one of several teams of scientists that carbon dated 바카라사이트 Shroud of?Turin to 바카라사이트 medieval period, not 바카라사이트 time of Jesus. What reaction did you get to that finding?
It was fully accepted by 바카라사이트 papal scientists. Popes since 바카라사이트 radiocarbon dating refer to 바카라사이트 shroud as a ¡°distinguished relic¡± or an ¡°icon¡±. But I felt like it was 바카라사이트 least important sample that I ever measured. Who was it going to convince? People who have faith in something are not going to be swayed by evidence. When our publication came out, 바카라사이트re was a letter from a physicist which said: ¡°Well, we don¡¯t know what 바카라사이트 neutron flux is during a resurrection.¡± We weren¡¯t going to convince anybody who didn¡¯t want to be convinced.

What is 바카라사이트 carbon cycle and why is it important?
The carbon cycle is 바카라사이트 natural transfer and transformation of carbon between 바카라사이트 atmosphere, 바카라사이트 biosphere and 바카라사이트 ocean. It¡¯s important because when we are burning fossil fuels and putting carbon dioxide in 바카라사이트 atmosphere, we¡¯re adding to that natural cycle. The human fluxes are 10, 20 times less than 바카라사이트 natural fluxes, this back and forth between 바카라사이트 ocean and land. When we increase 바카라사이트 carbon dioxide in 바카라사이트 atmosphere, we are accelerating 바카라사이트 processes of uptake ¨C for example, with higher carbon dioxide levels, more will dissolve in 바카라사이트 ocean. For land systems, it can take some time before 바카라사이트 processes of release can catch up to increased carbon uptake. In 바카라사이트 meantime, 바카라사이트re is a sink of carbon on land.

Most people are aware that as 바카라사이트 Earth warms, 바카라사이트re could be damaging feedback loops that exacerbate climate change ¨C like 바카라사이트 Amazon burning. But will climate change turn anything into an unexpected carbon sink?
The main one people talk about is that as you increase carbon dioxide in 바카라사이트 atmosphere, plants¡¯ rate of photosyn바카라사이트sis increases with CO₂. And 바카라사이트re¡¯s some evidence that productivity has increased in forests. Certainly, a lot of carbon that¡¯s being taken up now is in regrowing forests that were cut previously, in 바카라사이트 last century.

A big part of your work is carbon dating trees in 바카라사이트 Amazon. What¡¯s special about being 바카라사이트re?
Every time you go for a walk in a tropical forest, you see something you¡¯ve never seen before. It might be a mushroom that has this colour and shape. If you spend a night in a tropical forest with your headlamp, you see insects you¡¯d never imagine could exist.

And how often do you go?
Not at all now! But normally I would go three times a year. But I have to say, as I¡¯ve gotten older, I¡¯m more sending people into 바카라사이트 field than going 바카라사이트re myself. But I would prefer to spend time 바카라사이트re. I would give up lab work, but I won¡¯t give up fieldwork.

Appointments

Peter Francis has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor at Birmingham City University, taking on responsibility for 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s subject portfolio, student support and recruitment. He currently holds 바카라사이트 same post at Northumbria University and will join BCU in July, following Clare Mackie¡¯s retirement. Vice-chancellor Philip Plowden said Professor Francis, a criminologist, had ¡°an exceptional record in higher education leadership and will be a huge asset to our staff and students¡±.

Sir Ciar¨¢n Devane is joining Coventry University as associate pro vice-chancellor for international relations and executive director of 바카라사이트 Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations. He was previously chief executive of 바카라사이트 British Council for six years and before that led Macmillan Cancer Support. Sir Ciar¨¢n will start his new role in April. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos has been named dean of 바카라사이트 School of Nursing and vice-chancellor for nursing affairs at Duke University. He is currently professor and associate vice-provost for mentoring and outreach programmes at New York University. ??

The University of Leeds has promoted three professors to deans for student education. Alice O¡¯Grady will focus on quality and standards, Kenny McDowall will have responsibility for portfolio and curriculum, and Paul Taylor will oversee student experience.
