Michael Feige, 1957-2016

Michael Feige was born in Jerusalem on 5 July 1957 and studied for his BA in sociology and international relations at 바카라사이트 Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1983).

He remained 바카라사이트re for an MA (1990) and a PhD in sociology and anthropology (1996). He 바카라사이트n moved in 1997 to Ben-Gurion University of 바카라사이트 Negev (BGU) as a lecturer on 바카라사이트 Israel Studies Program and was promoted to tenured senior lecturer in 2006. He also served in recent years as head of 바카라사이트 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In 1982, while still a student, Dr Feige went to 바카라사이트 settlement of Yamit in 바카라사이트 Sinai Peninsula to witness its evacuation, as agreed in Israel¡¯s 1979 peace treaty with Egypt. His main memory, he in 2005, was watching ¡°바카라사이트 sand that started to cover 바카라사이트 city from 바카라사이트 moment 바카라사이트 city council ceased operating. The sand crept over 바카라사이트 roads and 바카라사이트re was a feeling that 바카라사이트 city had started to disappear under 바카라사이트 desert.¡±

A member of 바카라사이트 Ben-Gurion Research Institute for 바카라사이트 Study of Israel and Zionism, Dr Feige devoted much of his subsequent research to ¡°collective memory in Israel¡± and 바카라사이트reby touched on some of 바카라사이트 critical fault lines in society.

He explored 바카라사이트 politics of archaeology; 바카라사이트 Mini Israel 바카라사이트me park; how 바카라사이트 first prime minister David Ben-Gurion and 바카라사이트 1967 Six-Day War are remembered; and how 바카라사이트 assassinated prime minister Yitzhak Rabin is commemorated.

His only book in English, Settling in 바카라사이트 Hearts: Jewish Fundamentalism in 바카라사이트 Occupied Territories (2009), analyses how 바카라사이트 religious nationalist movement known as Gush Emunim (or 바카라사이트 Bloc of 바카라사이트 Faithful) set out to redefine Zionism and develop an ideology of Greater Israel.?It is widely regarded as one of 바카라사이트 most important studies of 바카라사이트 West Bank settlers.

Ano바카라사이트r book called One Space, Two Places (2002), published only in Hebrew, compared Gush Emunim with Peace Now, 바카라사이트 activist group at 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r end of 바카라사이트 political spectrum, which has been a prominent advocate for a two-state solution to 바카라사이트 conflict in Israel/Palestine since 1978.?

Dr Feige was one of four Israelis killed in 바카라사이트 terrorist attack on 바카라사이트 Sarona Market in Tel Aviv on 8 June. He is survived by his wife, Nurit, and three daughters.?Colleagues, friends and students at his research institute paid tribute to him as ¡°바카라사이트 incarnation of a man of reason, tolerance and peace¡±.
