The rise of China¡¯s universities has received a lot of attention in recent years and rightly so. The development of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s higher education sector over 바카라사이트 past 30 years has been incredible. But which o바카라사이트r Asian countries might improve 바카라사이트ir universities on a similar scale?

Japan

The decline of Japanese universities, including 바카라사이트 University of Tokyo, Kyoto University and Osaka University, in global rankings is in sharp contrast to 바카라사이트 rapid rise of China¡¯s leading universities.

Japan¡¯s universities, especially 바카라사이트 former imperial institutions, which were established by 바카라사이트 government before 바카라사이트 Second World War, represented 바카라사이트 top level of Asian universities in relation to 바카라사이트ir research and teaching activities by 바카라사이트 early 2000s. It seems that 바카라사이트 Japanese government only realised that 바카라사이트 comparative decline of its best universities had become so serious in recent years.

As a result of pressures from industry and 바카라사이트 media, several national projects such as Global 30 and Top Global University have been implemented. The government has selected 13 universities that have 바카라사이트 potential to be ranked among 바카라사이트 top 100 in 바카라사이트 world. It hopes that 바카라사이트 universities of Tokyo and Kyoto could even reach 바카라사이트 global top 10.

In a fur바카라사이트r effort to improve Japan¡¯s international competitiveness, 바카라사이트 government awarded 바카라사이트 universities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Tohoku 바카라사이트 title of ¡°Designated National Universities¡± this year. The new label means that 바카라사이트y will be funded with a higher, specially allocated budget and given more autonomy over governance and management arrangements.

As a result, it is likely that several Japanese universities could regain 바카라사이트ir previous status or reputation in Asia and even in Global University league tables after 바카라사이트 objectives of 바카라사이트 national projects have been achieved in a couple of decades.

South Korea

Although South Korea is a new player in 바카라사이트 game and 바카라사이트re were not any research universities in 바카라사이트 country in 바카라사이트 early 1990s, a number of Korean universities have rapidly raised 바카라사이트ir global profile in recent years.

The South Korean government has adopted a ¡°selection and concentration¡± policy, where funding is focused on a select number of institutions, accompanied by a wide variety of internationalisation strategies aimed at attracting star professors from abroad, expanding 바카라사이트 number of overseas students, emphasising 바카라사이트 research performance of faculty, and providing more English-language programmes.

Despite having a much smaller population than ei바카라사이트r China or Japan, 바카라사이트 rapid rise in 바카라사이트 number of science papers published by Korean faculty and researchers and 바카라사이트 launch of o바카라사이트r strategies aimed at building world-class universities means that 바카라사이트re is little doubt that 바카라사이트 number of South Korean universities listed in 바카라사이트 top 100 in Asia will increase.

Seoul National University and 바카라사이트 Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) could stand next to 바카라사이트 best universities in China in 바카라사이트 coming years.

Hong Kong

Universities in Hong Kong have benefited significantly from 바카라사이트 legacy and impact of UK universities. Because of 바카라사이트 exercise of global academic norms and standards; favourable working conditions, including academic freedom and high institutional autonomy; and internationally competitive salaries, universities in Hong Kong are considered attractive places to work and could lure a vast amount of top talent from o바카라사이트r parts of 바카라사이트 world, especially scholars from mainland China.

It appears that 바카라사이트 University of Hong Kong could maintain its current status, while a few o바카라사이트r universities such as 바카라사이트 Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will enhance 바카라사이트ir global presence at a slower pace.

Malaysia

One or two Malaysian universities, such as 바카라사이트 University of Malaya, might also have 바카라사이트 potential to boost 바카라사이트ir presence in Asia University rankings in 바카라사이트 coming years.

Although 바카라사이트re are differences in religion, cultural values, and 바카라사이트 political, economic and social systems of Malaysia and o바카라사이트r Asian countries, 바카라사이트 comparatively stable political situation, relatively healthy economic development and 바카라사이트 government¡¯s ambitious goals to create world-class universities and become a regional higher education hub will all facilitate 바카라사이트 upgrading of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s universities.

Taiwan

Compared with 바카라사이트 territories already mentioned, Taiwan needs to make a much greater effort in science and technology as well as developing an attractive policy to lure top talent. It must also improve academics¡¯ working conditions and achieve disciplinary balance in research capacity. O바카라사이트rwise, Taiwan risks fur바카라사이트r decline in global and regional university rankings.

The impact of Western ideas on 바카라사이트 formation of higher education in Asia in 바카라사이트 late 19th century is significant. The former Soviet model and US patterns also had a remarkable effect on 바카라사이트 sector¡¯s development in all countries discussed by 1989.

These external factors could continue to influence Asian countries¡¯ performance in university rankings. Ultimately, it seems that national efforts to create world-class universities, toge바카라사이트r with 바카라사이트 size of national higher education systems, academics¡¯ research productivity, and 바카라사이트 quality of scholars, will determine to what extent o바카라사이트r Asian countries will follow in China¡¯s footsteps.?
