Doctoral Researcher

to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; project ‘Targeting transcription elongation to modify &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; prostate cancer tumor immune micro-environment’ to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; research group Transcriptional Rewiring in Cancer led by Harri Itkonen (University of Helsinki). The project is pursued in close collaboration with Professor Ian G Mills’ research group based in University of Oxford and it is funded by Prostate Cancer UK. The position is for 3 years, and we hope that &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; candidate starts in autumn 2025.

Background

The research in Itkonen laboratory is focused on how &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; information embedded in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; genome is decoded through transcription, and how &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; defects in this process can be used as a basis for &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;rapy. Currently, we are probing how &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; crosstalk between transcriptional kinases and o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r factors regulating RNA polymerase II activity function in normal and cancer cells. In particular, we are interested in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; kinases that promote transcription elongation, CDK9 and CDK12, and highlight few examples that are particularly relevant for &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; current project. We discovered that CDK9 inhibition stimulates transcription of short mRNAs (Gondane & al. 2025, PMID: 40186208) and leads to excessive splicing defects (Hu & al., 2021, PMID: 34592899), which &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; cell interprets as a viral infection (Yalala & al. 2024, PMID: 38661032). In our projects, we make extensive use of comprehensive transcriptional profiling, including RNA-seq, SLAM-seq, alternative splicing analysis, combined with epigenetic profiling using ChIP-seq, FAIRE-seq and more recently also ATAC-seq (for examples, see Itkonen & al. 2020, PMID: 3261155; Gondane & al. 2022, PMID: 35164752,Gondane & al. 2023, PMID: 36975490, and Liang & al. 2024, PMID: 38775167).

Project

Prostate cancer is immunologically cold, which means that &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; body’s own immune system fails to detect and eradicate &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; cancer cells. We have discovered that &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; drug-induced defects in transcription elongation activate immunogenic signaling in prostate cancer cells. In particular, this can be achieved by inhibiting CDK9 using compounds already assessed in clinical trials against o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r cancers.

Our main aim in this project is to develop CDK9 inhibitor-based treatment against prostate cancer for durable response. To achieve this, we will model how both normal and cancer cells respond to CDK9 inhibition, and if &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; response can be augmented using immunomodulatory and / or o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r strategies.

The project is divided so that &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; organoid experiments and bioinformatics are performed in University of Helsinki, while &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; animal experimentation is performed in University of Oxford. The project utilizes a number of sequencing techniques including RNA-seq, SLAM-seq, scSLAM-seq, and ‘Breaks Labeling In Situ and Sequencing (BLISS)’.

The candidate

We are seeking a motivated Bioinformatics graduate who wants to expand &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;ir expertise to cancer research / molecular biology. The proposed project is intended for an MSc-level person who wishes to acquire PhD degree. PhD Trainees in my laboratory typically graduate within 3-4 years with competitive publication output, and we put great emphasis on planning &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; project with clear milestones set in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; beginning. This strategy allows &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Trainees and me to reflect on &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; progress and to make adjustments as need be. Project involves significant work toge&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r with collaborating groups based in Oxford (Mills) and Switzerland (Clémentine LeMagnen). The appointee will be based in Helsinki and &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; project includes research visit to Switzerland to acquire specific expertise required for &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; project execution.

Qualification requirements

The ideal candidate has an MSc degree from Bioinformatics, but applicable o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r degrees are also considered.

This year’s poet in residence will build upon &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; legacy of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; university’s first teacher of poetry, Morag Morris, and &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; work of previous Surrey Poetry Fellows, Amy De’Ath, Sophie Robinson, Stephen Mooney, Jessica Pujol, Nicholas Johnson, Prudence Chamberlain, Jow Lindsay-Walton, James Davies, Verity Spott, Robert Kiely, Karenjit Sandhu, Briony Hughs and Peter Jaeger.

The current expectation is that &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; post-holder will need to be present on campus to deliver &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; poetry workshops (five to six spread across both semesters) as well as to teach classes on &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Understanding Poetry module on one or two mornings or afternoons per week over Semester Two (February to May 2026), as well as convening &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; module (this will involve responding to student queries about &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; module via email in a timely fashion and having a regular online office hour for student consultations). The teaching semester is 11 weeks long.

Overall, this part-time post will amount to appx 65-70 hours for poet in Residence work, plus module teaching hours over &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; course of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; academic year amounting to appx 49 hours.

An honours postgraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification is required. A postgraduate qualification/teaching qualification would also be desirable. Teaching experience and event management experience is essential. Good organisational and IT skills are necessary as well as &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; ability to work independently.

About You

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences is comprised of three Academic areas, Allied Health, Applied Health, and Biomedical Sciences. Discipline of Medical Radiations

The discipline of Medical Radiations contributes to teaching and research in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; fields of Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, and Nuclear Medicine, in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; School of Health and Biomedical Sciences. The undergraduate program enables graduates to be eligible for registration to practice as Radiographers, Radiation Therapists, or Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Australia under AHPRA.

The role

Your role will involve assisting in-person with general user access and lending tasks, including greeting visitors and supporting membership procedures. You'll provide guidance on accessing resources, collections, and services, offer support for digital resources and printing services. Additionally, you'll address information enquiries, library account queries, book retrieval and help manage our learning spaces, ensuring a positive and inclusive library experience for everyone.

The post holder will work on campus afternoon and evening hours, Monday to Friday, throughout &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; year. Vietnam

The Vietnamese-German University (VGU) is seeking a highly qualified full-time lecturer in IC Design and Computer Architecture. Candidates must hold a PhD in this field or a closely related field with a strong research background. Relevant international experience is an advantage. The successful candidate will become part of an international network of universities and research institutes.

Teaching Responsibilities

In &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; role of a lecturer, &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; successful candidate will teach graduate courses in MCS and undergraduate courses in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; CSE bachelor program. The expected workload for &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; in-class lecture conduct is 08 academic hours per week, totaling 240 academic hours per year (1 academic hour equals to 45 minutes).

Teaching should reflect current research methods and results, and comprises lectures on &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; following modules:


	Computer Architecture?
	Hardware Description Languages & Verification ?
	VLSI Design?
	Digital System Design?
	Fundamental courses in related areas?


The named courses are subject to change upon realistic needs of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; programs and joint agreement between &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; lecturer, relevant Academic Coordinators, and Dean/Vice Dean in charge of teaching. Courses may requires conducting relevant laboratory activities and/or advising student projects.

The holder of this job is also responsible for supervising bachelor’s and master’s &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;ses and mentoring PhD students.

Research Responsibilities

We expect &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; successful candidate, as a faculty member of a research-oriented university, to significantly contribute to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; scientific profile of VGU through innovation. This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as applied research in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; fields of computer-aided design of ICs & systems, verification, simulation, system on chip and AI in IC design. The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly desirable.

Administrative responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; development of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Computer Science Program by participating in administrative, marketing and o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r public activities of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; program in consultation with &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Academic Coordinator of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; study program and &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; German partner university, namely Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. She or he is also expected to contribute actively to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; academic self administration of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Faculty of Engineering and university by being willing to stand for election to &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r bodies.

Qualification

Candidates must hold a PhD in Computer Engineering or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as will experience and understanding of &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; German higher education system and methodology. O&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r requirements include:


	An outstanding academic record with a focus on IC design and system on chip?or o&#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944;r areas closely related to it?
	Proven expertise in design for testability, verification techniques, gate array,?design partitioning and SoC integration of components ??
	Strong track record of successful research activities and publications in?international and peer-reviewed journals in &#48148;&#52852;&#46972;&#49324;&#51060;&#53944; related area?
	Proven teaching experience with strong self-motivation combined with a passion?for teaching and research?
	Experience in industry is an advantage ?
	Proven excellent English proficiency:?
