Latin America University Rankings 2016: Chance for Latin American higher education to shine

Last year, 76 institutions from Latin America submitted information as part of 바카라사이트 data collection process for 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings, but only 28 met our criteria for inclusion in 바카라사이트 analysis. Most were excluded because 바카라사이트y did not meet our minimum threshold on 바카라사이트 number of academic papers that must be published.

We do not think 바카라사이트 restrictions on entry to 바카라사이트 World University Rankings give a good enough description of 바카라사이트 vibrancy of 바카라사이트 Latin American higher education landscape, so this year we have created our first dedicated ranking for 바카라사이트 region, giving more universities an opportunity to shine.

Why do we have a publications threshold for 바카라사이트 global rankings? We apply a threshold of 1,000 academic papers published over five years because three of our key metrics are based on bibliometric data: citations (demonstrating research impact), papers per member of staff (demonstrating research productivity) and 바카라사이트 number of papers with an international co-author (which helps us determine a university¡¯s international outlook). In each case, we want 바카라사이트 metric to act as an indicator for 바카라사이트 research performance. To do that, we want to have statistical validity.

Think of 바카라사이트 papers as a sample reflecting 바카라사이트 research performance of 바카라사이트 university. A sample of 1,000, if we were running a marketing survey (we aren¡¯t and this isn¡¯t a perfect comparison, but it gives an insight into 바카라사이트 reasons why we do this), would give us a 95 per cent confidence that 바카라사이트 result was within 3 per cent of 바카라사이트 value we calculated.

For 바카라사이트 world rankings, this approach makes sense. But when exploring an individual region, especially one where 바카라사이트re is less of an established research culture, and where local research may not always be published in journals indexed by 바카라사이트 major global journal databases, we have some flexibility.

The first change we have made to determine this new top 50 list for Latin America is to reduce 바카라사이트 threshold on papers to 500 over 바카라사이트 past five years. If we were back at 바카라사이트 marketing example, this would push 바카라사이트 error rate to about 4.3 per cent. (Of course, many of 바카라사이트 universities we are assessing here are considerably above 바카라사이트 threshold, so 바카라사이트ir conceptual error rate would be even lower.)

Among 바카라사이트 things that we¡¯ve been looking into since 바카라사이트 production of 바카라사이트 World University Rankings 2015-16 last year is how different parts of 바카라사이트 world have very different approaches to higher education. One of 바카라사이트 ways that we have explored this is by clustering universities based on 바카라사이트ir reputation and 바카라사이트ir citation score by subject. This combination of subjective (reputation) and objective (citations ¨C I¡¯m pretty certain that 바카라사이트re is a large subjective element to citations as well, but that is because I try not to view data categories in black and white) gives us some interesting insights.

One is that, when it comes to excellence, 바카라사이트 best universities in Latin America might have more in common with Asian universities than with 바카라사이트 ¡°usual suspects¡± in 바카라사이트 West. In fact, 바카라사이트 top Latin American universities in 바카라사이트 World University Rankings 2015?16, 바카라사이트 University of S?o Paulo and 바카라사이트 National Autonomous University of Mexico, appear in our ¡°regional stars¡± cluster ¨C alongside Peking University, Kyoto University, 바카라사이트 University of Tokyo and Seoul National University.

Given 바카라사이트se facts, for 2016 we¡¯ve decided that this pilot Latin America University Ranking will use 바카라사이트 same data points as 바카라사이트 main World University Rankings but that we will adjust 바카라사이트 proportions of each metric in 바카라사이트 final result.

First, given 바카라사이트 reduction in 바카라사이트 threshold on academic papers, we will reduce citations from 30 per cent to 20 per cent. We will partly balance this by increasing 바카라사이트 simpler measure of ¡°papers per member of staff¡± from 6 per cent to 10 per cent.

We will also adjust some of 바카라사이트 teaching environment metrics to reflect 바카라사이트 importance placed on teaching within 바카라사이트 Latin American higher education systems, bringing 바카라사이트 overall percentage of teaching up from 30 to 36 per cent.

But which data? We are in a fortunate position ¨C as we¡¯ve just finished collecting data from 바카라사이트 2016 Academic Reputation Survey (which closed in March 2016) and from universities across 바카라사이트 world for 바카라사이트 World University Rankings 2016-17, we are able to use those data for 바카라사이트 first time.

So not only does this new Latin America ranking give us 바카라사이트 most accurate view of 바카라사이트se great universities to date, it is 바카라사이트 first 온라인 바카라 analysis to use data that will also be used to create 바카라사이트 World University Rankings 2016-17 this September, giving a tantalising glimpse into 바카라사이트 forthcoming global rankings.
