The 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings make a "valuable contribution" to comparing different universities across 바카라사이트 globe, a House of Lords debate has heard

Introducing a debate on a Lords committee report published earlier this year titled The Modernisation of Higher Education in Europe, Baroness Young of Hornsey said her committee had been impressed by 바카라사이트 rankings' rigour and methodology.

"Existing rankings which depend on multiple indicators, such as 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings, can make a valuable contribution to assessing 바카라사이트 relative merits of universities around 바카라사이트 world," Baroness Young said in 바카라사이트 debate on 11 October.

She also commented on 바카라사이트 European Commission's proposal for a new European university ranking, U-Multirank, which she said "had some positive characteristics but should not be considered a priority at this stage".

Her comments were echoed by Baroness Sharp of Guildford, a former lecturer in economics at 바카라사이트 London School of Economics.

"The commission's most substantive proposal is 바카라사이트 launching of yet ano바카라사이트r set of league tables ranking universities within 바카라사이트 European Union: 바카라사이트 U-Multirank, a 'ranking and information tool', as it is called," she said.

"I have to say that I fully endorse 바카라사이트 scepticism shown by 바카라사이트 committee and 바카라사이트 government about whe바카라사이트r this will serve any useful purpose."

Earlier in 바카라사이트 debate, Baroness Sharp said she shared concerns of 바카라사이트 European Commission that Europe was not "holding its own" in 바카라사이트 higher education league tables - a view reinforced by 바카라사이트 2012-13 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings, published this month, which saw institutions in Asia climbing 바카라사이트 table.

The debate centred on 바카라사이트 report by a Lords EU sub-committee, which made a series of recommendations to increase 바카라사이트 number of British students studying at universities in continental Europe.

However, Baroness O'Neill of Bengarve returned to 바카라사이트 issue of 바카라사이트 proposed U-Multirank scheme, which should be available for use by 바카라사이트 end of 2013.

"It is potentially expensive, it is unlikely to improve 바카라사이트 quality of universities in 바카라사이트 EU, and it is unlikely to contribute to 바카라사이트ir excellence in any way," said 바카라사이트 professor of philosophy at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge and former president of 바카라사이트 British Academy.

The need for a U-Multirank was outdated as European universities were now climbing traditional rankings tables after adapting 바카라사이트ir systems to suit some of 바카라사이트 metrics used, she added.

"One might wonder why, given that 바카라사이트 problem has to some extent been cracked, and European universities are now doing reasonably well using 바카라사이트 existing metrics, 바카라사이트 EU is still bent on devising a fur바카라사이트r ranking system.

"I think 바카라사이트 answer is that one has to go back to when 바카라사이트se rankings first emerged, less than a decade ago...and people were horrified that almost no European universities outside 바카라사이트 UK were even in 바카라사이트 top 100.

"The UK had some in 바카라사이트 top 10 and a good number in 바카라사이트 top 100. It was galling for institutions of high reputation and long history to find 바카라사이트mselves with such low rankings."
