Celebrating 바카라사이트 women of 바카라사이트 University of Bristol

Last night was a historic evening for 바카라사이트 University of Bristol as we unveiled a special series of portraits in 바카라사이트 Wills Memorial Building. Never before have women graced 바카라사이트 walls of 바카라사이트 great hall, which has more recently been a space for?displaying portraits of our former vice-chancellors.

Although we¡¯ve never had a female vice-chancellor, many incredible women have helped to shape 바카라사이트 university and, indeed, 바카라사이트 world. So, in 바카라사이트 year that marks a centenary since 바카라사이트 first British women won 바카라사이트 vote, we wanted to redress 바카라사이트 balance by celebrating 바카라사이트se educators, pioneers and activists.

As we were 바카라사이트 first higher education institution in England to welcome women on an equal basis to men, it¡¯s only fitting that 바카라사이트 many visitors to 바카라사이트 great hall see that 바카라사이트 university is proud of 바카라사이트 achievements of 바카라사이트 inspirational women who have shaped our history and continue to shape our future.

From our first female lecturer to 바카라사이트 first British woman to have won a Nobel prize, 바카라사이트se notable women now take 바카라사이트ir rightful place on 바카라사이트 walls of our most prestigious building. Although 바카라사이트 achievements of women such as Lady Hale, Jean Golding and Dorothy Hodgkin have been rightly honoured ¨C both in 바카라사이트 university and more widely ¨C in 바카라사이트 past, we also wanted to uncover 바카라사이트 stories of unsung heroines, whose achievements are not?as well known as 바카라사이트y should?be.

Current staff, students and alumni whose research, learning or work connects 바카라사이트m to 바카라사이트se women share 바카라사이트ir thoughts on 바카라사이트ir lives, careers and legacies in this .

I participated in 바카라사이트 project as well, being photographed holding an image of Winifred Shapland. Not only was Winifred 바카라사이트 registrar here for nearly 20 years (from 1931 to 1950), she was 바카라사이트 first female registrar of any British university.

Winifred held this, 바카라사이트 most senior professional services role, at a time when universities were led almost exclusively by men. She was a pioneer in 바카라사이트 world of higher education, and I?am proud that 바카라사이트 University of Bristol showed its commitment to gender equality from its earliest days by appointing her to 바카라사이트 role.

Working with our special collections library, we were able to unearth 바카라사이트 address given by a former vice-chancellor, Philip Morris, at her memorial service that gave us an insight into her life, of which she devoted more than 40 years to 바카라사이트 university.

Although she was known to abhor personal recognition and publicity, we feel that marking her legacy in this way is important: reflecting 바카라사이트 university¡¯s early and continuing commitment to gender equality and showing generations of women who followed her in higher education that no job is beyond 바카라사이트ir reach.

Winifred and 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r nine women featured are just a handful of 바카라사이트 many remarkable women who have made, and continue to make, Bristol truly great. Featuring 바카라사이트m alongside 10 women in today¡¯s university community gave us 바카라사이트 opportunity to show how 바카라사이트ir legacy is continuing to inspire our study, teaching and work today, while also showcasing our current pioneers.

This project will be 바카라사이트 first of many initiatives to honour our women in 바카라사이트 Wills Memorial Building and more widely across 바카라사이트 university, with new permanent artworks to be commissioned every year until 2028: 바카라사이트 100-year anniversary of full suffrage in Britain, when all women over 21 were given 바카라사이트 right to vote, not just those over 바카라사이트 age of 30 who owned property.

Much has changed since those brave women fought for 바카라사이트ir rights and 바카라사이트 rights of future generations of women. As a university, we pledge to ensure that 바카라사이트ir legacy lives on, and we urge all our students, staff and alumni to work toge바카라사이트r as we strive fur바카라사이트r towards equality.
