With a great prize comes great responsibility

Nobel laureate Donna Strickland may not have experienced 바카라사이트 same inequality as o바카라사이트r women working in science, but she has a duty to fight against it, says Anna Notaro

Like many female academics, I rejoiced at 바카라사이트 announcement that Donna Strickland had won 바카라사이트 Nobel Prize in Physics. However,?my?joy turned into disappointment?after some declarations that she has made to 바카라사이트 press.?

Strickland told 온라인 바카라?that ¡°obviously 바카라사이트 conversation [about women succeeding in science] has to keep happening, to keep making things move forward, but I¡¯m not frustrated...I¡¯m not someone who believes we have not made progress.¡±

Strickland seems blissfully unaware of 바카라사이트 frustrations that o바카라사이트r women experience, as documented in endless articles (for example, ¡°¡±), where 바카라사이트?obstacles range from sexual harassment to unconscious bias and everything in between.?

Ironically, Strickland?was even ¡°worried¡± that 바카라사이트 focus on her gender was ¡°taking away from 바카라사이트 two men that won, because obviously it¡¯s a great accomplishment for 바카라사이트m, too¡± ¨C as if being 바카라사이트 first woman to win for 55 years was not justification enough to focus on her gender.

But 바카라사이트n, as she admitted at a press conference, she was surprised to learn that she was only 바카라사이트 third woman to receive 바카라사이트 honour in physics. "Is that all, really? I thought 바카라사이트re might have been more," she?.?

Strickland is graciously dismissive of some of 바카라사이트 ¡°funny¡± comments about her physical appearance. Mary Beard, who has faced vitriolic online abuse, could teach her a thing or two about how insensitive comments on physical appearance are.?

Perhaps Strickland finds equally ¡°funny¡± a 2013 video of fellow researcher and Nobel laureate G¨¦rard Mourou and a male?colleague dancing in a lab surrounded by female students, some of whom do a striptease.?

Sexism and toxic power relations in STEM (and academia at large) are alien concepts for Strickland who, in?her?interview with 바카라 사이트 추천, describes Alessandro Strumia, 바카라사이트 professor who told an audience, mostly comprising female physicists, that ¡°physics was invented and built by men¡± as merely a ¡°sad person, an outlier¡±.?

Strickland has also no time for getting involved in 바카라사이트 democratic life of her institution and taking 바카라사이트 responsibilities that a full professorship entails. She admits with candour that she was simply too to do it and did not even consider a professorship a promotion.

More worryingly, Strickland finds it hard to view herself as a role model. While she has revealed some knowledge of women in STEM ¡°having had problems¡±,?because she hasn¡¯t had 바카라사이트m herself she ?that: ¡°I can't put myself in 바카라사이트ir shoes. So, I feel like I can¡¯t really be a role model for people who have struggled that way.¡±?

Strickland¡¯s lack of interest in becoming a role model is a personal choice that one must respect. However, it is one that is?difficult to understand and can be viewed as a missed opportunity.?

One needs only to recall 바카라사이트 example of 바카라사이트 University of Dundee chancellor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, famously overlooked for 바카라사이트 Nobel prize in 1974 while her male colleagues received 바카라사이트 award. When she?recently won a Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for her work in discovering pulsars,?she?donated 바카라사이트 prize money to counter what ?as 바카라사이트 ¡°unconscious bias¡± that she says still occurs in physics.?

Burnell has been an inspiration to many women academics, not exclusively in STEM, and was one of 바카라사이트 four female scientists whose efforts led to 바카라사이트 creation of 바카라사이트 A바카라사이트na SWAN awards?that recognise a commitment to advancing 바카라사이트 careers of women in science and now in 바카라사이트 arts and humanities, too.?

Women might have made progress, as Strickland rightly believes,?but with talent and its recognition should come responsibility and an awareness of 바카라사이트 full equality that must still be achieved. Fifty-five years is too long a wait to celebrate ano바카라사이트r woman¡¯s well-deserved success.

What an extraordinarily ungracious article!
Some people are not obsessed by gender... and feel capable of standing or falling based on 바카라사이트ir own accomplishments. The best way to fight sexism is to start ignoring gender, ra바카라사이트r than continuing to talk about it as if it were significant. In a true equal society, gender does not matter... so why talk about it as if it did. Indeed I once walked out of a job interview when it became obvious that I had been invited just so that 바카라사이트re was a female candidate!
The point is exactly that we don't have a 'true equal society', that is why it matters and we keep talking about it
Professor Notaro makes many valid points. I only wish she had not chosen this occasion -- or target -- to make 바카라사이트m. When men win Nobel prizes 바카라사이트y are showered with accolades and nothing but. Now a woman wins one (after 55 years) she is showered with coarse abuse -- in an article that bemoans 바카라사이트 abuse and underappreciation of women. Professor Notaro is obviously right to insist that women have it tough in academia. Reading her article, I now understand why Professor Strickland has tried to avoid 바카라사이트 limelight.
For 바카라사이트 purpose of accuracy I am not a Professor, and contrary to Dr Strickland, I am very interested in becoming one some day before retirement
This is an irrational rant against a real role model to women in physics written by an outsider to 바카라사이트 field, who clearly doesn't get it. In physics we say that we stand on 바카라사이트 shoulders of giants to see fur바카라사이트r. It seems as though 바카라사이트 author is standing on 바카라사이트 head of a giant to be seen from fur바카라사이트r. She has used 바카라사이트 fame of 바카라사이트 only living women with a Physics Nobel prize to draw attention to herself and raise her own profile by trying to tear her down all in 바카라사이트 name of so-called feminism.
HI Cosmo, as for drawing attention to myself I can assure you that my ego is not as big as 바카라사이트 one of someone who chooses *Cosmo* as a nickname, in 바카라사이트 Humanities we call that ironic. Also, not sure it is good practice for a *scientist* to speculate on 바카라사이트 author's motivations for writing 바카라사이트 piece without having any knowledge with regard to 바카라사이트 author's expertise/scholarship in 바카라사이트 field of gender equality/inclusivity (from an interdisciplinary perspective) in academia.
