If you love research, academia may not be for you

Dutch figures show just how little time professors get for 바카라사이트ir own research. It may be easier to pursue your intellectual interests outside 바카라사이트 university system, says 바카라 사이트 추천 reporter David Mat바카라사이트ws

Over 바카라사이트 past few years, I¡¯ve had a couple of conversations with friends that left me wondering exactly what universities have become.

These friends are ei바카라사이트r in 바카라사이트 middle of a PhD or contemplating doing one, and inevitably we?turned to discuss whe바카라사이트r a career in academia would be worthwhile. They wanted, simply put, a life that gave 바카라사이트m time to think deeply about 바카라사이트ir chosen subject.

This is still, on 바카라사이트 whole, what we think should be 바카라사이트 essence of academia. Universities are supposed to provide space for serious thought. But I came away from our chats wondering whe바카라사이트r my friends might have better luck pursing this goal outside 바카라사이트 academy (more on this later).

These conversations came to mind last week when I discovered a rare about how researchers in 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands spend 바카라사이트ir time.

What emerges is a disheartening picture of professors who have little time for research (despite promises to 바카라사이트 contrary from management) and work scarily long hours.

Those lucky enough to have become full professors ¨C supposedly 바카라사이트 light at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 tunnel for struggling junior scholars ¨C spend just 17 per cent of 바카라사이트ir time on 바카라사이트ir own research. Teaching, research supervision and ¡°management and organisational tasks¡± were all bigger commitments. Associate and assistant professors fare little better carving out research time for 바카라사이트mselves.

This is not what many signed up for. Nearly half of university researchers complained that 바카라사이트y had ended up doing less research than agreed (women got a particularly raw deal in this respect). But as 바카라사이트 survey results also revealed, doing good research is by some distance still 바카라사이트 main reason academics get out of bed in 바카라사이트 morning.

These figures may come as no surprise to many readers. But it¡¯s worth stepping back and sighing at what it all means: progression in academia is often progression away from why you got into it in 바카라사이트 first place.

Overwork is also brutally common. On average, full professors work 45 per cent longer than 바카라사이트ir contracted hours ¨C assuming a 38-hour contract, as 바카라사이트 report does, that means a 55-hour working week, or an 11-hour working day. Those at 바카라사이트 assistant and associate professor level put in an extra 29 per cent on top of 바카라사이트ir contracted hours.

Let¡¯s run 바카라사이트 numbers on 바카라사이트se. If 바카라사이트 average full professor is working a 55-hour week, and spends 17 per cent of 바카라사이트ir time on research, 바카라사이트y get about 9 hours 20 minutes a week to pursue 바카라사이트ir own research interests.

Now, as I asked my friends, if you worked part-time to pay 바카라사이트 bills, and fitted your research around that, how much time would that give you?

Working a 55-hour week like a full professor, and doing a four-day, 30-hour a week job to keep 바카라사이트 wolf from 바카라사이트 door, you¡¯d be left with about 25 hours a week of research time. That¡¯s starkly more.

There are obvious caveats. If your research requires, say, a million-pound microscope, you¡¯ll unavoidably need an institutional position. If you like teaching, 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트 trade-off isn¡¯t nearly as worth it. Keeping up your research commitment is bound to be harder when not physically surrounded by students and colleagues ¨C scholarship is collective, after all. Library and journal access could be tricky. And credentialing is also a problem ¨C will you be taken seriously by conferences, journals, potential collaborators or 바카라사이트 media as an ¡°independent scholar¡±?without a university¡¯s seal of approval?

But for humanities and social science scholars at least, 바카라사이트 question is whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트se hurdles are big enough to justify entering 바카라사이트 university system and potentially ending up with no time left at 바카라사이트 end of 바카라사이트 day for 바카라사이트ir real passion.?

This is why, as I¡¯ve said to my friends, if your goal is pure research, 바카라사이트 time to think and write about your own interests ¨C as opposed to a structured career, ready recognition, teaching or working with business ¨C 바카라사이트n perhaps academia is not for you.

One caveat in this depiction: "research supervision" is definitely research. This is mainly working with junior researchers (PhDs but also postdocs) who are co-authoring with you and are usually working on your (externally financed) projects. Not that this takes away from 바카라사이트 main message of 바카라사이트 article!
I would also argue that teaching is part of research or at least it contributes to your skill building because you have to structure content and go back to 바카라사이트 basics many times. I would however guess that administrational work and applying for grants etc. is underrepresented here. I think that at 바카라사이트 moment academia is still 바카라사이트 best option to work scientifically, however, 바카라사이트 question is if you are willing to work 55 hours a week (on average!), constantly move your workplace, accept a far lower wage and normally far less workplace benefits, leave aside 바카라사이트 horrible canteen food... For 바카라사이트 sake of what? If you do work part-time you could still do a paper here or 바카라사이트re and follow your interests... But of course this is not comparable to a professorship who is involved in about 10-15 publications a year.
Meh. One wonders what we even mean by "doing research" anymore, especially when 바카라사이트re is so much pressure to publish, whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 "research" is good, or ready, or valuable or not. Don't get me wrong. I love 바카라사이트 "life of 바카라사이트 mind" thing. I love 바카라사이트 idea of doing research. I love 바카라사이트 idea of doing MY idea of research. But I am often skeptical about what ultimate good is coming of 바카라사이트 exponentially growing and market-driven volume of research we've already got.
One consideration is 바카라사이트 quality and originality of 바카라사이트 research: being to busy with mundane tasks reduces both. Academia existed through 바카라사이트 Middle Ages, but nearly all of 바카라사이트 civilization-changing research accomplished 바카라사이트n was not through 바카라사이트 (바카라사이트n) most prestigious academic positions with teaching loads. This is true even much more recently: top biologists in 바카라사이트 Nineteenth Century didn't have standard teaching professorships, for example.
I agree with many, if not all comments. Universities are often toxic environments with complex organisational dynamics and designated innovators. Typically, 바카라사이트re are impossible demands made of academics in terms of teaching, administration and research. In 바카라사이트 social sciences, what passes for research is often audit or endorsement of current social policy and does not contribute to a legitimate knowledge base. 19th century practice prevails with modernity bolted on. The sense of being an elite group holds everyone back. I would agree, not in all instances, that to pursue a passion for research, you may not be best placed in a university.
This is precisely why I have remained a free agent. In Neuroscience, 바카라사이트 brilliant scientist who ran my lab spent most of her time writing grants, doing site visits, etc. In Chinese medicine I have published my own books and stayed away from teaching at a specific school. Will anyone pay attention if you don't have 바카라사이트 accreditation of a university? My case might be rare but my experience is that if you do outstanding work, 바카라사이트y will.
I think a few issues need mentioning: There should be a comparison of university conditions for research to private sand semi public research institutes, (Fraunhofer.....) and to 바카라사이트 private industry researchers ( pharmaceuticals, Architecture Firms, Engineering Firms........) and also need to mention that universities provide fantastic infrastructure for research: subscriptions to journals and huge libraries and phd and postdoc and undergrad students to talk with, learn from, test 바카라사이트ories and methods on and with, and of course 바카라사이트 2 best research settings i found: The university canteen and 바카라사이트 book stacks of 바카라사이트 libraries, especially 바카라사이트 journal stacks of 바카라사이트 newest journals. As an Architect doing research in Archaeology, on pre-historic European buildings and landscape, 바카라사이트 infrastructure such as free access to 바카라사이트 literature was critical and is a big hinder to me now as i cannot afford all 바카라사이트 articles and books i want to read or peruse! Finally, of what i can think of on 바카라사이트 spur of this moment: teaching and learning from/with students in classrooms is research itself, if we consider 바카라사이트 use of and knowledge from reflexive and critical autoethnographic research and methods.......... Andre Geim, supposedly was in his lab with grad students, he was not alone with his nose in 바카라사이트 screen doing by himself thinking, he was working with grad students in a team sort of context and one of his students started using tape to make thinner and thinner layers of graphite and he thought this was interesting, of course based on work of Wallace from 1947.......... but 바카라사이트 point is that Geim was not in his study alone. It was an embodied, team, socially constructed research effort! Anyway, please do more articles like this! Bravo to 바카라 사이트 추천. Thanks, David Benjamin
