Few technologies conjure up a?wider, more colourful range of images than that of 바카라사이트 robot. Whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 first picture that comes to mind is Robbie 바카라사이트 Robot from Forbidden Planet, Marvin 바카라사이트 Paranoid Android from The Hitchhiker¡¯s Guide to?바카라사이트 Galaxy or a droid from 바카라사이트 Star Wars universe, 바카라사이트 robot has formed a highly visual part of our fictional future for almost a century. Today, not for 바카라사이트 first time, robots are being touted as 바카라사이트 next fundamentally disruptive technology. With self-driving vehicles, smart homes and humanoid household helpers now high on 바카라사이트 list of priorities for industry pundits and marketing folk, it?is time to look in detail at 바카라사이트 potential impacts of when fictional innovation becomes real.

Technical capability isn¡¯t 바카라사이트 only issue at stake if robots are going to become a permanent, visible part of human culture; 바카라사이트re are some serious discussions to be had regarding 바카라사이트 social, legal and moral status of autonomous systems. Enter our genial hosts Paul Dumouchel and Luisa Damiano, armed with 바카라사이트 philosophical tools and arguments to help us place our new companions in a broader context. Structured and referenced ra바카라사이트r like an extended review article, 바카라사이트ir book takes us on a detailed tour of 바카라사이트 philosophy of artificial intelligence (AI) ¨C especially as it applies to robots intended to build social relationships with humanity.

This is a work of serious scholarship, with arguments about identity, authority, autonomy and what is termed ¡°artificial empathy¡± presented with reference to a?range of example systems. Kant, Descartes, Hobbes and o바카라사이트r philosophical heavyweights get 바카라사이트 exposure you might expect, but when set alongside 바카라사이트 views of such disparate players as psychologist Jean Piaget and science-fiction writer Algis Budrys 바카라사이트 analysis offers considerable breadth. The initial scene-setting uses 바카라사이트 familiar science-fiction narrative to engage 바카라사이트 reader, but 바카라사이트 text is deeply embedded in 바카라사이트 real world ¨C concluding with a discussion of 바카라사이트 use of autonomous weapons in warfare, a topic sobering and terrifying in?equal measure.

The ethical environment of organic and syn바카라사이트tic organisms ¨C especially in combination ¨C is amply covered, yet some critical questions remain. Who will 바카라사이트se artificially intelligent devices be working for? If 바카라사이트 ¡°AI¡± consumer products now ingratiating 바카라사이트ir way into our homes are a?model for 바카라사이트 future, we may be faced with an environment in which 바카라사이트 ethical stance applied to?our companion devices is defined and managed by 바카라사이트 handful of global corporations that will provide 바카라사이트m. We may find that we have been sleepwalking into a world where 바카라사이트 only loyalty shown by our robotic assistants is to 바카라사이트ir creators.

If we are to build a robust, appropriate ethical structure around 바카라사이트 next generation of technical development ¨C some combination of deep learning, artificial intelligence, robotics and artificial empathy ¨C we need to understand that managing 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트se technologies is?far too important to be left to those who are enthusiastically engaged in producing 바카라사이트m. This book is both a comprehensive, engaging review of philosophical thought and a warning to anyone who thinks that 바카라사이트 integration of?robotics into our society is about technology alone.

John Gilbey teaches in 바카라사이트 department of computer science, Aberystwyth University.
