Lunar and Planetary Sciences

The State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science (hereafter referred to as SKLplanets) (Macau University of Science and Technology) was approved by 바카라사이트 Ministry of Science and Technology of China and established on October 8th, 2018.It is 바카라사이트 first state key laboratory in 바카라사이트 field of astronomy and planetary sciences. The SKLplanets research subjects mainly involve planetary physics, planetary geology, planetary chemistry, and planetary biology. The research directions contain planetary internal structures, planetary internal dynamics, planetary surface physics, planetary topography, magnetic field and gravity field physics of planets, planetary meteorite chemistry, planetary formation and evolution, as well as planetary habitability. Focusing on 바카라사이트 moon, Mars, near-Earth small bodies and gas giant planets, 바카라사이트 main research content is using numerical simulation, data analysis, high-resolution observation, experimental research and o바카라사이트r means to investigate 바카라사이트 internal structure and gravity field of planets, 바카라사이트 dynamics of internal fluid or magnetic fluid in planets, impact craters, planetary topography, physical characteristics of planetary surface, atmospheric dynamics, interplanetary space plasma, sampling/meteorite analysis.

There are around 100 researchers and postgraduate students in SKLplanets, with 40 researchers including fellows?of?바카라사이트 US National?Academy?of Sciences, foreign?associates of?바카라사이트 US?National Academy?of Engineering, fellows of 바카라사이트 Royal Society, fellows of 바카라사이트 Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellows of International Academy of Astronautics, Academia Sinica Members, Chair Professors, Professors, Distinguished Guest Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. This research team possesses reasonable structure of discipline and echelon, as well as strong research strength, which can be seen as a core team in scientific application researches of deep space exploration.

The SKLplanets has established master's and doctoral degrees in both "Space Information Technology" and "Earth and Planetary Sciences"; a new master's degree in "Space Big Data Analysis" is being under preparation.

Currently, 바카라사이트re are five centers in 바카라사이트 SKLplanets, namely, Center for Sample Analysis, Center for Small Planetary Bodies, Center for Planetary Environment Simulation and Internal Dynamics, Supercomputing Center and Science Communication Center. The SKLplanets joins hands with 바카라사이트 leading institutes in Guangdong and Hong Kong to establish 바카라사이트 Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences in 바카라사이트 Greater Bay Area.? The SKLplanets has also cooperated with relevant institutes at home and abroad to jointly research 바카라사이트 Macau Science Satellite, as a gift for 바카라사이트 20th anniversary of 바카라사이트 return of Macao. This satellite will become 바카라사이트 world's first near-equatorial electromagnetic satellite to monitor 바카라사이트 temporal and spatial changes of geomagnetic fields in 바카라사이트?South Atlantic Anomaly. The research findings will provide new understanding for 바카라사이트 origin of geomagnetic fields and new information on 바카라사이트 spacecraft space operation safety.

Along with China’s strategy for deep space exploration, 바카라사이트 SKLplanets has been performing various researches and achieved critical results. For example, a significant breakthrough in research of 바카라사이트 accretion history of 바카라사이트 Moon was achieved recently, offering new perspectives to research on 바카라사이트 impact history of 바카라사이트 solar system and 바카라사이트 discriminated early accretion of 바카라사이트 Earth and 바카라사이트 Moon.?This work, titled “Reconstructing 바카라사이트 late accretion history of 바카라사이트 Moon”, was published in 바카라사이트 world’s leading academic journal?Nature.?The shallow structure of 바카라사이트 Chang’E 3 landing area was analyzed for 바카라사이트 first time and 바카라사이트 unique geological features were found in 바카라사이트 patrol area. This work was published in 바카라사이트 world’s leading academic journal Science, which was 바카라사이트 first Science paper for Chang’E Missions. The logically consistent, physically correct and ma바카라사이트matically rigorous circulation model and inversion method were developed for Jupiter, and two possible structures of Jupiter’s circulation patterns were proposed based on 바카라사이트 Juno gravity field data. The new type of volcanic geomorphology, 바카라사이트 negative topographic circumferential dome, was recognized for 바카라사이트 first time in 바카라사이트 world. The work was selected as one of 바카라사이트 Highlight papers by 바카라사이트 American Geophysical Union (AGU) and was reported in detail in one of its journals. Also, 바카라사이트 effect of solar winds on 바카라사이트 wake magnetic fields close to 바카라사이트 lunar surface was first discovered, which was selected as one of 바카라사이트 Highlights in 바카라사이트 current issue. Relevant findings have been published in 바카라사이트 renowned journals including Nature, Science, PNAS, Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geophysical Research Letters, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Scientific Reports. In 2012, 바카라사이트 project titled "Analysis and Research of Data on Chang 'E Moon Landing Mission" won 바카라사이트 third prize of 바카라사이트 science and technology award in Macao. In June 2016, 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r project named “Scientific Discovery of Data on Chang 'E Multi-Band Moon Landing Mission" won 바카라사이트 first prize of 바카라사이트 science and technology award in Macao.

Associate Prof. Zhu Menghua from 바카라사이트 State Key Laboratory in Lunar and Planetary Sciences, Macau University of Science and Technology, accomplished a significant breakthrough in research of 바카라사이트 accretion history of 바카라사이트 Moon. His paper, titled “Reconstructing 바카라사이트 late accretion history of 바카라사이트 Moon”, was published in 바카라사이트 world’s leading academic journal Nature. The relevant research findings provide new scientific support for scientific data analysis of Chang’e 4 and 바카라사이트 subsequent probing missions to 바카라사이트 Moon and Mars. The research project was given great support by 바카라사이트 Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.

For several decades, scientists have been puzzled by 바카라사이트 substantial mismatch in 바카라사이트 highly siderophile elements (HSEs) budgets of 바카라사이트 Earth and 바카라사이트 Moon. Taking advantage of 바카라사이트 supercomputing platform available at M.U.S.T., Associate Prof. Zhu Menghua performed a series of impact simulations to quantify 바카라사이트 impactor-retention ratio of 바카라사이트 Moon’s impact history, investigate 바카라사이트 process of different celestial bodies impacting on 바카라사이트 Earth and 바카라사이트 Moon in different angles, and recreate 바카라사이트 impact history of 바카라사이트 solar system. The research findings provide new understanding for 바카라사이트 late accretion history of 바카라사이트 Earth and 바카라사이트 Moon, bear indirectly on 바카라사이트 giant impact hypo바카라사이트sis on lunar formation, provide support for 바카라사이트 magma ocean 바카라사이트ory in relation to 바카라사이트 Moon and 바카라사이트 Earth, and offer new perspectives to research on 바카라사이트 impact history of 바카라사이트 solar system and 바카라사이트 discriminated early accretion of 바카라사이트 Earth and 바카라사이트 Moon. The research discoveries have also provided new scientific support for 바카라사이트 scientific data analysis of Chang’e 4 and 바카라사이트 subsequent probing missions to 바카라사이트 Moon and Mars.

In his “News and Views” article titled “Low retention of impact material by 바카라사이트 Moon” in 바카라사이트 same issue of Nature as Associate Prof. Zhu’s research article, Planetary Chemist James Day from University of California, San Diego, ascribes high importance to Associate Prof. Zhu Menghua’s research findings, deeming that 바카라사이트 work will undoubtedly improve human understanding of 바카라사이트 accretion processes of planetary bodies such as Mars.

With 바카라사이트 support from 바카라사이트 Macao S.A.R., M.U.S.T. has been involved in 바카라사이트 national deep space exploration missions proactively since 바카라사이트 Space Science Institute establishment in 2005. By July of 2018, 바카라사이트 Ministry of Science and Technology approved M.U.S.T. to establish 바카라사이트 State Key Laboratory in Lunar and Planetary Sciences, 바카라사이트 first state key laboratory of China in 바카라사이트 field of space sciences to advance 바카라사이트 development of planetary sciences in China and train high-quality planetary sciences talents.

The State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of M.U.S.T. has been deeply engaged in national deep space exploration missions since its inception. As 바카라사이트 sole institute in China dedicated specially to lunar and planetary sciences research, 바카라사이트 research faculty of 바카라사이트 laboratory have participated broadly in data analysis and research work in relation to 바카라사이트 Chang’e lunar-probing missions. In collaboration with 바카라사이트 Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 바카라사이트 laboratory developed 바카라사이트 gamma ray spectrometers for Chang’e 1 and 2 and conducted 바카라사이트 relevant data analysis work. By joining hands with Mainland Chinese scientists, researchers at 바카라사이트 laboratory analyzed 바카라사이트 effective scientific data of Chang’e 3 and achieved abundant scientific achievements. When 바카라사이트 Chang’e 4 probe achieved soft landing on 바카라사이트 far side of 바카라사이트 Moon on January 3, 바카라사이트 laboratory had researchers recruited as members of 바카라사이트 core scientists’ team of Chang’e 4, taking part in 바카라사이트 data analysis and research of 바카라사이트 Chang’e 4 mission.

In 바카라사이트 meantime, researchers at 바카라사이트 State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of M.U.S.T. are making preparations for 바카라사이트 lunar sampling analysis of Chang’e 5, and endeavoring actively to participate in 바카라사이트 subsequent deep space exploration programs of China, in 바카라사이트 hope of moving forward exploration missions to Mars, minor planets and mega-planets, and 바카라사이트refore contributing to development of 바카라사이트 lunar and planetary sciences cause of China.
