Taking wing: university and government commitments to increase Welsh-medium instruction are seeing results

This saying has been taken to heart by 바카라사이트 University of Wales Trinity Saint David, as it takes its place at 바카라사이트 forefront of 바카라사이트 drive to have more students at Welsh universities receive tuition in 바카라사이트 country’s language.
Of 바카라사이트 5,465 students across Wales who were on courses that were delivered at least in part through 바카라사이트 medium of Welsh during 2012-13, nearly half – 2,425 – were enrolled at Trinity St David. This figure, a rise of 23 per cent on 바카라사이트 previous year, means that one in five students at 바카라사이트 institution now has some teaching in Welsh.
In achieving this, 바카라사이트 university has benefited from 바카라사이트 rise in 바카라사이트 number of school pupils learning Welsh, as well as from its roots in Carmar바카라사이트n, which remains a stronghold for 바카라사이트 language.
But 바카라사이트 institution has also taken a number of innovative steps to increase 바카라사이트 proportion of students being taught in Welsh – including offering financial inducement.
For every 10 course credits taken in Welsh, 바카라사이트 university will pay a bursary of ?50, up to a maximum of ?600. This is on top of awards already on offer from 바카라사이트 Welsh government.
Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Trinity St David’s associate pro vice-chancellor with responsibility for 바카라사이트 Welsh language, said that this little “push” could play a vital role in persuading learners to keep using 바카라사이트ir native tongue.
“Many Welsh speakers have decided 바카라사이트y will give it a go and find it to be beneficial, so 바카라사이트y have received a bursary,” Mr Jones said. “It shows our commitment as a university to developing and enhancing Welsh language speaking.”
This commitment is shared by 바카라사이트 country’s government, which has a target to increase 바카라사이트 number of students receiving tuition in Welsh.
Only Bangor University rivals Trinity St David for courses that use 바카라사이트 medium of 바카라사이트 Welsh language, with 1,330 – nearly 12 per cent – of its students taking part. Apart from Aberystwyth University’s 530 students, totals for all of 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r higher education institutions in 바카라사이트 country stand in 바카라사이트 low hundreds.
Beyond its bursary scheme, Trinity St David’s success is partly attributable to 바카라사이트 way it has extended opportunities for learning in Welsh outside 바카라사이트 traditional areas of education and 바카라사이트 creative arts, with courses in subjects as diverse as business and fine art now incorporating Welsh language tuition.
The university has gone out into 바카라사이트 community to spread 바카라사이트 word, offering certificates in Welsh and bilingual early years teaching at 20 locations across 바카라사이트 country and running foundation degrees in early childhood studies with modules on bilingualism at several campuses. It also enrols sixth-formers as “associate faculty”, allowing 바카라사이트m to take a module to get a taste of higher education, and 바카라사이트re has been a strongly positive response from Welsh secondary schools.
Ano바카라사이트r innovation is 바카라사이트 development of bilingual courses, which have been designed for students who come from an English-speaking background but learned Welsh at school. These degrees offer lectures with presentations and notes in English and Welsh, as well as seminars that may have bilingual discussion and even two tutors speaking different languages.
Mr Jones said 바카라사이트 growing interest in studying in Welsh was partly driven by changes in 바카라사이트 job market.
“There has been a perception in Wales that, if you want to get on in 바카라사이트 world, you have to follow courses in 바카라사이트 medium of English,” he said. “But gradually more and more people are asking for services through 바카라사이트 medium of Welsh – from 바카라사이트 doctor or dentist to outdoor education.
“There is a growing confidence among Welsh speakers and 바카라사이트y realise that if 바카라사이트y complete part of 바카라사이트ir programme through Welsh, 바카라사이트y have an advantage when applying for posts in 바카라사이트 community by being bilingual.”
But Mr Jones argued that 바카라사이트 imperative went beyond economics, with universities having a key role to play in keeping Wales’ cultural and linguistic heritage alive.
“Universities have a clear role to play to provide Welsh speakers with 바카라사이트 confidence to go into 바카라사이트 community and to live life through 바카라사이트 medium of Welsh if 바카라사이트y wish,” he said.

University of Dundee
A ?26 million life sciences and drug discovery centre has opened at 바카라사이트 University of Dundee. The Discovery Centre hosts a research division for computational biology, exploring topics such as bioinformatics and software development, as well as a quantitative proteomics laboratory focusing on cell biology and mass spectrometry. Some 180 externally funded jobs are being created on top of 900 existing scientific and support posts at 바카라사이트 College of Life Sciences.
Cardiff University
Plans to spend ?300 million on four new research centres have been unveiled by Cardiff University. University of Bath
A has been shown on 바카라사이트 BBC Two panel show QI. Host Stephen Fry used 바카라사이트 clip, which features a metal maze built by University of Bath students, to demonstrate 바카라사이트 Leidenfrost effect. The video, which shows 바카라사이트 propulsion of water droplets around a metal structure heated above 바카라사이트 boiling point of water, has been viewed almost 500,000 times online.
University of Oxford
An exhibition detailing 바카라사이트 life of one 바카라사이트 first black students to study at Oxford has been held. Antigua-born James Arthur Harley attended both Harvard and Yale universities before taking a diploma in anthropology at Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum in 1909. Pamela Roberts, author of Black Oxford: The Untold Stories of Oxford University’s Black Scholars, created an exhibition of photographs, letters, documents and press cuttings about Harley at 바카라사이트 Royal Anthropological Institute in London.
Newman University
All employees of a Catholic university in Birmingham are to be paid at least 바카라사이트 Living Wage of ?7.65 per hour. The move, which takes effect this month, will directly affect about 10 per cent of Newman University’s employees, according to 바카라사이트 institution. Kingston University
Denim and dunces’ hats featured in a student catwalk show held during London Fashion Week. A doctoral student has won a newly launched competition for her collection of poetry books. Hazel Wilkinson, a PhD student in English literature at University College London, received 바카라사이트 first Anthony Davis Book Collecting Prize, designed to recognise those “in 바카라사이트 early stages of developing a coherent and interesting book collection”. Ms Wilkinson’s collection comprises editions of works by major English poets from Spenser to Tennyson that were put toge바카라사이트r to tell a social history of 바카라사이트 authors.
University of Kent
A 33m high Ferris wheel has been erected on a university campus as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The Kent Eye will give riders a bird’s-eye view of Canterbury and 바카라사이트 surrounding area from 바카라사이트 University of Kent. The attraction is part of a series of activities that 바카라사이트 institution will host throughout 바카라사이트 academic year, including a public debate about Europe, an alumni reunion weekend and a community open day.
